No: Mazda’s reported design filing does not confirm an RX-7 successor. The July 2026 report says the documents do not name a vehicle. Their drawings are described as a small, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible with butterfly-style doors and an apparent longitudinal four-cylinder engine. Those details have fueled speculation, but they do not establish Mazda’s plans or a production car.
What does the reported Mazda filing show?
According to the July 2026 filing report, the drawings depict a compact rear-drive convertible with butterfly-style doors and an apparent longitudinal four-cylinder layout. The report does not identify the vehicle as an RX-7, and a design filing alone is not a production announcement.
The distinction matters: the door style and apparent engine arrangement are descriptions of drawings, not confirmed specifications for a Mazda model. The available report also does not establish that the filing is connected to Mazda’s rotary-engine work or its Iconic SP concept.
Is Mazda making a new RX-7?
There is no confirmed RX-7 successor in the cited information. No confirmed name, production date, price, or final powertrain has been announced. The reported filing gives enthusiasts something to speculate about, but it does not show that Mazda has approved a successor.

Mazda Europe product-planning supervisor Moritz Oswald has been reported as expressing interest in a more emotional model alongside or above the MX-5, while stressing the need for a feasible business case. As the report on his comments makes clear, enthusiasm is not a launch commitment.
How the Iconic SP fits—and what it does not prove
Mazda’s Iconic SP, unveiled in 2023, is an official concept, not a confirmed production successor. Its two-rotor rotary engine generates electricity in an electrified system. Mazda lists concept specifications of 370 PS and 1,450 kg; neither figure is a specification for a production RX-7 successor.

The concept demonstrates one way Mazda has presented rotary technology in a modern sports-car vision. It does not establish that the reported convertible filing uses a rotary engine, or that the Iconic SP will enter production.
Mazda’s rotary work is real, but a rotary sports car is unconfirmed
In February 2024, Mazda said it had formed a 36-engineer group focused on rotary development. The company also said rotary-powered vehicle mass production had resumed in June 2023 with the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, after RX-8 production ended in 2012. These are signs of continued engineering and vehicle use of rotary technology—not confirmation of a rotary-powered sports car. See Mazda’s announcement on rotary-engine development.

A separate report published August 25, 2026, describes a patent filing for a turbocharged rotary engine with an exhaust-gas recirculation system designed around rotary-engine exhaust characteristics. That patent report does not confirm production or a vehicle application. It should not be treated as evidence of an RX-7 or RX-8 successor, or assumed to be related to the convertible design filing.

Mazda’s 2025 Vision X-Coupe and Vision X-Compact are also presented by the company as vision concepts and design direction, not as a named RX-7 successor. The official concept announcement does not announce a successor.
