Mazda’s U.S. hybrid lineup illustrates a staged strategy, not a single shift to one kind of hybrid. The current CX-50 Hybrid uses Toyota’s hybrid system; Mazda says the next-generation CX-5 is planned to pair its own SKYACTIV-Z engine with a Mazda-developed hybrid system by the end of 2027. For plug-in choices available now, Mazda USA lists the CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV.
How Mazda’s hybrid strategy works
Mazda calls its electrification plan “multi-solution”: it aims to match technologies to regional conditions and customer needs rather than convert every model to the same powertrain. Its March 2025 roadmap shows three distinct stages: a Toyota-system hybrid in the CX-50, a planned Mazda-system hybrid in the next CX-5, and possible future use of in-house hybrid technology in larger products. The roadmap is a corporate plan, not a guarantee that every proposed application will reach production. Which Mazda hybrids are available in the U.S.?
Mazda USA’s current model information provides three useful examples. The model names alone do not mean the vehicles use the same technology: the CX-50 is a conventional hybrid, while the CX-70 and CX-90 examples are plug-in hybrids. Availability and specifications vary by market and model year; this lineup summary is U.S.-specific. Mazda USA’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid page is the place to check live specifications.

What makes the CX-50 Hybrid different?
The CX-50 Hybrid is Mazda’s current U.S. example of a conventional hybrid using partner technology. Mazda’s roadmap explicitly identifies Toyota’s hybrid system in this model, distinguishing it from the proprietary system planned for the next CX-5. It does not need to be plugged in: the hybrid system combines electric assistance with the vehicle’s fuel-powered operation without requiring an owner to charge from an outlet.

For 2026 CX-50 Hybrid models, Mazda USA lists EPA-estimated fuel economy of 39 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 38 mpg combined. Those are model-year-specific estimates, not a promise of real-world mileage; driving conditions and habits affect results.
How the CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs differ
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has an externally chargeable battery, allowing some driving on electric power when the battery is charged. It also retains a fuel-powered engine, so owners can use the vehicle without depending entirely on charging. The CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs therefore suit a different pattern of use from the non-plug-in CX-50 Hybrid: charging can support electric trips, but it is optional to the vehicle’s basic ability to operate.

Mazda North American Operations’ 2025 Sustainability Report cited the CX-70 PHEV at up to 56 MPGe using premium fuel, up to 26 miles of electric range, and a 490-mile combined range for the report period. Those are report-period figures, not necessarily the current model-year specifications. MPGe is an efficiency measure for electric operation expressed in miles per gallon equivalent; it should not be compared directly with a conventional-hybrid mpg rating as if the measures were interchangeable. Check Mazda’s current U.S. PHEV information for the model year you are considering.
What Mazda has announced for the next CX-5
Mazda announced that it plans to pair its SKYACTIV-Z engine with its own hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. This is the clearest announced future hybrid application in the company’s March 2025 materials. It is a target in a corporate roadmap—not a currently available vehicle—and Mazda has not supplied a complete production specification in those materials. No fuel-economy figure, electric range, price, or detailed launch timing beyond that target should be inferred from the announcement.

Are Mazda hybrid systems planned for the CX-70 or CX-90?
Mazda’s 2025 roadmap says it will consider applying elements of its in-house hybrid system to larger products. “Consider” is exploratory language, not confirmation of a future CX-70 or CX-90 with that system. Mazda has offered larger models with different electrified powertrains in various contexts; an earlier management-plan speech described CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90 offerings with PHEVs and diesel engines paired with mild-hybrid systems. That historical planning context does not establish today’s availability in every market. For current offerings, use the relevant country’s model listings.
Charging: the practical distinction for shoppers
A conventional hybrid such as the CX-50 Hybrid does not need an external charger. A PHEV owner can charge from an external power source to make use of its electric-only driving capability. Mazda identifies a 240-volt Level 2 charger as a relevant home-charging option for PHEV shoppers; installation, connector, electrical capacity, and vehicle compatibility must be confirmed for a specific vehicle and home. Charging time, range, and mileage can vary with vehicle and battery condition, temperature, driving habits, and other factors. What else is on Mazda’s electrification roadmap?
The March 2025 plan also describes a Mazda battery EV planned for 2027 and a potential plug-in hybrid derivative based on its dedicated EV platform. These are future roadmap items, not vehicles established as on sale. Mazda says collaboration and use of existing manufacturing assets are part of a lean-asset approach. The company projected 40% lower development investment and 50% fewer development man-hours for that planned EV through collaboration and partnership; those are projections about EV development, not measured outcomes for a hybrid model. How to compare the models
- Decide whether you want to plug in. The CX-50 Hybrid does not require external charging; the CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs can use electric-only driving when charged.
- Compare like with like. Keep market and model year constant, and distinguish mpg from MPGe and electric range.
- Check the vehicle’s role and size. The CX-50 is a compact crossover; the CX-70 is a larger SUV, and the CX-90 is a three-row SUV.
- Separate current products from plans. The CX-50 Hybrid and the listed PHEVs are current U.S. examples; the next CX-5 hybrid is planned for by the end of 2027; larger-product use of Mazda’s in-house hybrid technology remains under consideration.
