For the North American Mazda3 hatchback, the four generations begin with the 2004 model year, followed by the second generation in 2009, the third in 2014, and the fourth in 2019. Those are market-specific model-year labels—not universal launch dates. Mazda’s announcements mark the redesigns in 2008, 2013, and 2018, while sales and model-year timing differ by market.
What are the Mazda3 Hatchback generations by year?
The table uses North American model-year labels. It identifies each generation’s first model year, not the complete year-by-year sales record for every country. Mazda’s official announcements establish redesign and launch milestones; they do not by themselves verify every market’s final model year for each generation.

What year did each Mazda3 generation start?
First generation: 2004 model year
Mazda began producing the Mazda3 in June 2003. The company identifies the model as the Axela in Japan and Mazda3 in North America, Europe, and other key markets. Second generation: 2009 model year
Mazda announced the new five-door in November 2008. In December, the company said the hatchback would reach North American showrooms in the first quarter of 2009. Third generation: 2014 model year

What is the latest Mazda3 Hatchback model year?
Mazda Mexico currently lists a 2026 Mazda3 Hatchback in three versions. That establishes availability on Mazda’s Mexico product page, not the lineup or availability in another country. Why can generation year ranges differ by country?
A vehicle’s reveal date, production start, retail-sale date, and model-year designation are separate markers. They may fall in different calendar years, and manufacturers use different market schedules. Mazda also uses the Axela name in Japan. As a result, a North American generation-start year should not be presented as a global year boundary.

Mazda’s public announcements confirm the redesign milestones above, but they are not a complete worldwide year-by-year ledger. For an exact start or end year in another market, consult that country’s model-year brochures or vehicle records rather than extrapolating from a North American launch.
How to identify the generation of a specific Mazda3 Hatchback
- Start with the vehicle’s market and model year. Use the country where it was originally sold and the model year in its records, not just the registration year.
- Match the year to the North American starts above only if the car is a North American-market vehicle. For other markets, verify the local generation change and year cutoff.
- Confirm the exact configuration from its records. Engine, transmission, trim, safety equipment, infotainment, and connectivity can vary by market and model year; the generation label alone does not establish those details.

What to compare when choosing a used generation
There is no reliable one-size-fits-all “best generation” verdict in these milestone records. For a useful comparison, use official local specifications for the exact year and trim, and compare:

- Trim names and the equipment included in each trim.
Keep the market and model year consistent across the comparison: a trim name, powertrain, or feature offered in one country may not exist under the same name—or at all—in another.

Mazda reported that cumulative Mazda3 production reached four million units on January 22, 2014, ten years and seven months after production began. In its 2018 announcement, Mazda said more than six million units had been sold since the model’s 2003 debut.
