The engine could eventually matter to other models, but treating it as a confirmed Miata or CX-50 powertrain goes beyond what Mazda has announced.
What Mazda has confirmed about SKYACTIV-Z
Mazda describes SKYACTIV-Z as a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine under development. The company says it is intended to work with electrification technology and become a core engine in its future lineup. Mazda’s stated first planned application is the next-generation CX-5 with Mazda’s own hybrid system by the end of 2027. Mazda’s March 2025 strategy announcement and its technology and strategy overview describe the development direction and planned timing.
Its connection to SPCCI
Mazda says it is expanding the operating area of SPCCI combustion and building on combustion technology developed over time. Mazda commercialized SKYACTIV-X in 2019 and describes it as its first lean compression-ignition engine using SPCCI. That makes SKYACTIV-Z part of the same broad development direction, but Mazda has not said it is simply a production SKYACTIV-X or published detailed hardware specifications.
Emissions goals are not certification results
Mazda says SKYACTIV-Z development targets Euro 7 in Europe and LEV4 and Tier 4 standards in North America while pursuing fuel economy and driving performance. Those are development objectives, not confirmation that the engine has passed certification or achieved independently measured results.

Is Mazda’s new engine coming to the next Miata?
There is no official confirmation in the Mazda materials reviewed that the next Miata will use SKYACTIV-Z. Mazda has not announced a next-generation Miata engine choice or a schedule linking the roadster to the engine. The CX-5 is the named first planned application; any Miata connection remains a possibility, not an announced product plan.
Will the next CX-50 get SKYACTIV-Z?
Mazda has likewise not identified the CX-50 as a SKYACTIV-Z application. The company’s stated first use is the next-generation CX-5, not the CX-50. A shared engine family could be relevant to future models, but Mazda has not confirmed CX-50 fitment or timing.

Why the engine matters to Mazda’s wider lineup
Mazda says combustion improvements developed for SKYACTIV-Z are intended to transfer to inline-six engines in its large-product range and inform a roadmap for rotary-engine emissions. It also projects consolidating future engine hardware units to less than half their prior level and engine-control software to two-thirds. These are company plans and projections about development and engineering organization—not measured fuel savings, emissions reductions, or customer benefits. Mazda’s roadmap announcement sets out those intentions.

Do not confuse the announced CX-5 with the later SKYACTIV-Z plan
The next-generation CX-5 Mazda unveiled for Europe in July 2025 is listed with an e-SKYACTIV G 2.5 engine and Mazda M Hybrid. Mazda’s separate plan for SKYACTIV-Z pairs it with a new Mazda hybrid system for a later introduction by the end of 2027. These are distinct powertrain announcements, and Mazda notes that timing can vary by market. The July announcement also says CX-5 cumulative global sales exceeded 4.5 million, according to Mazda’s own data—context for the model’s importance, not evidence about SKYACTIV-Z performance.
