Hard starting, uneven idle, coolant loss, smoke, or unusual odors can signal a problem on an FD RX-7, but none identifies a failed rotary component on its own. Begin with safe visual and fluid checks, then have a rotary-experienced technician assess persistent symptoms. A rotary-specific compression test is central to evaluating mechanical condition; generic piston-engine limits are not a reliable substitute.
What the warning signs can—and cannot—tell you
Symptoms are useful clues, not diagnoses. A hard start or fluctuating idle can have multiple causes: Mazda maintenance guidance recommends reproducing the complaint, inspecting wiring and vacuum hoses, and checking mechanical condition rather than assuming an electronic fault. Its 1993 maintenance excerpt is available in the 1993 Mazda RX-7 maintenance information.

- Hard starting or uneven running: Note whether it happens cold, hot, after a short stop, during warm-up, or while slowing down. Record warning lights and any recent change in behavior.
- Stalling or fluctuating idle: A compilation of historical bulletins reports an idle/stall issue and ECU countermeasure for certain 1993 cars. Its VIN scope is narrow, and the page cautions that part information may have been superseded; it does not establish that every FD with these symptoms needs an ECU. See the third-generation RX-7 bulletin and recall compilation.
- Coolant loss: Check for a falling level or visible residue only when the engine is fully cold. A leak needs diagnosis; low coolant does not by itself identify the failed part.
- Fuel smell or wet fuel traces: Treat suspected fuel leakage in the engine bay as urgent. Stop driving and arrange an assessment.
- Smoke: Note when it appears and its location, but do not use smoke alone to name a failed seal or other component.
Safe first checks
Inspect with the engine cold
Look for wet areas or dried residue, damaged or disconnected hoses, loose or corroded electrical connections, and vacuum lines that appear cut, pinched, or misrouted. Mazda’s maintenance information recommends visual inspection of wiring, connectors, vacuum hoses, and the air-induction system when investigating possible vacuum leaks. These checks can reveal visible faults; they cannot measure rotor compression.
Check fluids safely
Check engine-oil level and condition. Check coolant only after the engine has cooled fully. Mazda’s 1994 factory service manual warns that removing the radiator or coolant filler cap when the engine is running or hot is dangerous: pressurized coolant or steam can cause serious burns. The warning appears in the manual’s Basic Inspection section, reproduced at 1994 Mazda RX-7 factory service manual. Never open a hot cooling system.

When and how to get a rotary compression assessment
If starting or running problems persist, or the engine’s condition is uncertain, ask a technician familiar with the 13B-REW for a rotary-specific compression test. Request the full report, including test conditions and individual rotor-face results, and ask the technician to explain the interpretation. Do not treat one unexplained number as a definitive verdict.
Mazda’s 1993 maintenance information recommends checking mechanical condition with a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or engine analyzer, but the available excerpt does not give FD rotary pressure limits or the complete rotary-specific procedure. Generic piston-engine thresholds should not be applied to the 13B-REW. Have the correct method and results interpreted by someone experienced with rotary engines.

The manual also gives a cranking safety warning for fuel-injected vehicles: use a remote starter rather than the ignition switch during compression testing. The injectors may otherwise trigger, creating a fire hazard or contaminating the oiling system. This is a job for a qualified technician if you lack the correct equipment or rotary experience.

Visual checks and compression testing compared
| Check | What it can establish | Limits and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Cold-engine visual and fluid inspection | May reveal fluid loss, residue, damaged hoses, loose connections, or obvious wiring and vacuum-line problems. | Does not quantify rotor compression or confirm an internal engine fault. Check coolant only when cold. |
| Rotary-specific compression assessment | Provides a more direct assessment of mechanical condition when performed and interpreted correctly. | Requires the correct rotary procedure and interpretation. The cited maintenance excerpt does not supply FD rotary limits; seek a technician familiar with the 13B-REW. |
Check historical campaign records by VIN
Coolant-leak campaign for specified early cars
Mazda’s Recall Campaign 54407 material covers specified 1993–94 RX-7 VINs, not every FD. It describes repeated operation under particular high-speed-then-shutdown conditions as a possible cause of compromised cooling-system integrity. If coolant leaked onto the exhaust manifold, it could, under some circumstances, cause an engine-compartment fire. The material says, “Repeated operation of the vehicle in this manner may produce cooling system leaks.” Check the VIN and repair history with Mazda or a trusted current recall-record source; the historical campaign document alone cannot establish whether a particular vehicle is covered or whether its remedy was completed. See the recall section in the 1993 Mazda RX-7 maintenance information.

Fuel-hose campaign for specified early cars
A separate historical campaign covered specified 1993–94 production. The reproduced bulletin describes heat-related deterioration that could reduce fuel-hose sealing and, rarely, lead to an engine-compartment fire. Its described remedy included hose replacement and a cooling-fan control change. The campaign’s production scope is not universal to all FD RX-7s; verify coverage and completion by VIN and repair records using Mazda or a trusted current recall-record source. If fuel is present or suspected now, stop using the vehicle until it is assessed. Details appear in the third-generation RX-7 bulletin and recall compilation.
A completed campaign remedy addresses the defect identified by that campaign; it does not certify the engine’s present condition. Production equipment and campaign coverage vary by market and model year.

- 【NOTE】 This set includes both left and right engine brackets. Although the outer packaging is labeled "RH" (Right Hand), the mounting holes are specifically designed for left/right sides and precisely engineered for accurate installation. Simply match the physical shape of the bracket to your vehicle’s original mounting position.
- 【FEATURE】Left & Right engine motor mount collectively play a supporting, fixing, and shock-absorbing role in the vehicle, and they are crucial for ensuring the smoothness, stability, and reliability of vehicle power transmission.
- 【WHEN TO REPLACE】Replace engine mounts if you notice excessive vibration, unusual noises, engine movement, visible damage, misalignment, increased cabin noise, or if they are old (5-10 years or 60,000-100,000 miles), as failing mounts can lead to further damage and reduced vehicle performance.

Practical inspection order for an owner or buyer
- With the engine cold, inspect for coolant or fuel traces, damaged hoses, loose or corroded electrical connections, and cut, pinched, or misrouted vacuum lines.
- Check engine-oil level and condition. Check coolant only when cold; do not open a hot cooling system.
- Review the vehicle’s VIN-specific recall and repair records, especially if it may fall within the specified early-car coolant or fuel-hose campaign populations.
- If mechanical condition remains uncertain, commission a rotary-specific compression test and request the full report and test method.
- If a symptom is intermittent, ask a qualified technician to reproduce it under the conditions in which it occurs; Mazda maintenance guidance recommends testing when the complaint happens.
