These filings describe a proposed system, not a confirmed production engine, and they do not establish its efficiency, emissions performance or commercial prospects.
How the six strokes work
Mazda Motor Corporation’s U.S. application US20250264077A1, published August 21, 2025, describes a reciprocating engine with six strokes. The unusual step is a second compression after combustion: the engine routes some of the resulting hot gas to a fuel decomposer.

- Intake: Air enters the cylinder.
- Compression: The air-fuel mixture is compressed.
- Expansion: Combustion pushes the piston down.
- Recompression: Combustion gas is compressed again and routed through a third port to the decomposer.
- Re-expansion: The piston descends again.
- Exhaust: Exhaust gas leaves the cylinder.
In the patent’s proposed system, heat and pressure from the recompressed gas support decomposition of hydrocarbon fuel into hydrogen and carbon. A hydrogen-permeable membrane separates the hydrogen and routes it toward the intake to be used as engine fuel. The sequence is a patent description; it is not a published demonstration of engine output or performance.

The concept does not make the fuel’s carbon disappear. It proposes retaining carbon in the decomposer while returning hydrogen to the engine. A related U.S. application, US20250264075A1, also published August 21, 2025, describes a catalyst that retains carbon and a water-vapor adsorption portion. It says hydrogen produced in the decomposer is supplied back into the cylinder while carbon remains attached to the catalyst. A related Japanese filing, JP2025125428A, published August 27, 2025, describes a carbon-removal mechanism and recovery section.

Those features make carbon handling part of the system’s operation, not a footnote. The filings do not state how much carbon would be retained per amount of fuel, how often it would need to be removed, or where the recovered material would go. The practical burden of storage, removal and recovery therefore remains unclear.
What the patents establish—and what they do not
The applications establish that Mazda filed documents describing an on-board fuel-reforming concept. They do not announce that Mazda is building or selling a six-stroke vehicle, set a launch date, or provide results from an independent test of this specific system.

The U.S. patent text includes an assertion that the system can realize carbon neutrality. That is a claim in a patent document, not an independently demonstrated life-cycle result. Evaluating any climate benefit would require evidence about the fuel and energy inputs, engine output, tailpipe emissions, carbon storage, and eventual carbon handling. The reviewed filings do not report an efficiency figure, emissions reduction, capture rate, cost or durability result for the proposed engine.
How to read the “hydrogen from gasoline” claim
The patent describes reforming hydrocarbon fuel within a vehicle system and using the separated hydrogen as engine fuel. That is different from showing that the whole vehicle runs without carbon emissions: carbon is retained rather than eliminated, and the filings do not establish its ultimate fate. Nor do they provide comparative test data against a conventional four-stroke gasoline engine or another hydrogen pathway. Without figures for energy use, output, packaging and carbon handling, claims that this design is cleaner or more efficient remain unproven.
