Before committing to a used Mazda RX-7 FD, make a rotary-specialist compression test a condition of purchase, then check cooling health, starting behavior, sequential-turbo operation, gearbox, body and service history. The FD’s 13B-REW is a sequential twin-turbo rotary; an attractive price cannot tell you whether its engine is healthy or what deferred work will cost.
Start with evidence of engine condition
A compression report is among the most useful pieces of evidence when buying an FD, but only if the test is appropriate for a rotary and its conditions are clear. Ask for the readings for each rotor face, the cranking speed, the test method and the tester’s interpretation. Compare results with the factory specification for the applicable model year and procedure—not an unexplained number from a different test.

Mazda’s 1994 RX-7 factory service manual specifies compression of 690 kPa (7.0 kgf/cm², 100 psi) at 250 rpm, with a maximum chamber differential of 150 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm², 21 psi) at 250 rpm. Those are figures from the 1994 manual under its stated test-speed condition, not a universal pass/fail guarantee for every FD year, instrument or testing circumstance. See the 1994 Mazda RX-7 factory service manual.
A conventional piston-engine compression gauge, or a report giving only one unqualified reading, does not establish equivalent evidence. Have a rotary specialist perform or interpret the test and provide the individual readings. The PistonHeads buying guide calls 7–8 bar good and says below that is cause for concern; treat this as that guide’s rule of thumb, not a substitute for the year-specific factory method. Its article is dated 16 October 2017: PistonHeads Mazda RX-7 powertrain buying guide.

Inspect the car in a buyer-focused sequence
1. Verify identity, history and modifications
- Review ownership records, service history, invoices and any rebuild paperwork. Check consistency between the claimed work, mileage records and engine/chassis documentation where applicable.
- Establish the car’s original market and specification. Verify any special-edition or rarity claim with documentation rather than appearance alone.
- Look closely at modifications, wiring changes, removed emissions equipment and tuning. Ask for parts, installation and calibration invoices; an undocumented modification makes condition and future diagnosis harder to judge.
- Give extra weight to complete records, intact wiring and original hardware, including sequential-turbo components. The Car Collector International FD buyer’s guide also highlights continuous records, original manuals and invoices, and documented major work.
2. Observe a cold start, then a warm restart
Arrange to see the car with the engine cold. Note how it starts, settles at idle and behaves as it warms; watch for smoke, warning indications or evidence it has already been repeatedly warmed before your arrival. After a road test brings it fully up to temperature, switch it off and check that it restarts warm. Difficult hot starting, rough idle, smoke or an unexplained rebuild claim calls for specialist diagnosis before you decide.
3. Check cooling condition and heat-related clues
Inspect coolant level and condition, hose age, radiator condition, the water-pump area and signs of leakage such as coolant smell or dried residue. Ask about maintenance and any overheating. Look for steam from the exhaust, especially at startup, while recognizing that these observations are screening clues rather than a diagnosis. PistonHeads specifically flags the air-separator tank as a potential leak source and startup steam as a warning sign associated with coolant-seal deterioration.

4. Assess vacuum plumbing and sequential-turbo behavior
Inspect vacuum hoses and turbo-control components for age, damage, missing parts or improvised routing. On a sufficiently long road test, assess whether boost delivery is smooth and the sequential transition occurs without an unexplained flat spot or erratic behavior. PistonHeads describes heat-related solenoid and rubber-pipe failures and says the second turbo should come in with a slight step around 4,500 rpm when working properly. That is guidance from its 2017 article, not a universal diagnostic threshold for modified cars or every variant.

5. Inspect gearbox, body and chassis
Pay attention to gear changes, particularly fourth-to-fifth; PistonHeads identifies poor shifts there as a known issue. Have the car inspected on a lift by someone familiar with the model. Check corrosion, structural repairs, paint and accident history, suspension mounting points, brakes, tires and underbody condition. A clean exterior or low odometer reading cannot establish sound structure or mechanical health.

6. Arrange an independent specialist inspection
Before making an offer, identify a rotary specialist who can inspect and service the car, and confirm that the shop is within practical reach for future work. Request a written report and compression sheet. Ask the shop to distinguish immediate safety work, engine and cooling risks, and optional restoration or performance upgrades. Price deferred work using current written estimates from a local specialist rather than relying on old guide figures.
