Those figures do not, by themselves, predict how quick one car will feel against another. Gearing, vehicle weight, traction, shift timing, and the condition of a used car all affect acceleration. The Miata’s higher horsepower rating than the 2019 Fiat Classica or Lusso should not be treated as a complete performance verdict, just as the Fiat’s higher torque figure should not be treated as proof that it is faster in every situation.
2019 124 Spider: 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo
The 2019 U.S. 124 Spider uses a 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged engine. The FIAT USA brochure lists 160 hp for Classica and Lusso and 164 hp for Abarth. The owner manual lists 184 lb-ft of maximum torque. That is 33 lb-ft more than the Miata’s published peak, and turbocharged torque can make the Fiat feel more forceful at lower engine speeds or in a taller gear.
Turbo torque also changes the way you drive. You may need fewer downshifts for a quick pass, but boost delivery, throttle calibration, and heat management become part of the car’s personality. Abarth is not simply a badge on the same specification sheet: its brochure power rating is different and its equipment is distinct. Compare the exact trim rather than assuming every 124 Spider drives or is equipped the same way.

Horsepower and torque are measured at particular engine speeds. They do not show the full torque curve, gear ratios, final-drive ratio, or the response you feel when you open the throttle halfway through a corner. A used-car test drive should therefore include low-speed urban driving, a steady-speed roll-on, and several manual downshifts if the car has a stick shift. Listen for hesitation, inconsistent boost, warning lights, or a clutch that slips under load. Those observations tell you more about the particular car than a single peak number.
Transmission choice and the trims that control it
Miata transmission availability
For 2026, Mazda’s U.S. announcement specifies a six-speed manual as standard. Sport and Club are manual-only in that announcement. Grand Touring can be ordered with the manual or an available six-speed automatic. If you want two pedals in a new Miata, start with Grand Touring; do not assume an automatic is available on every trim.

Because transmission availability is trim-specific, verify the window sticker or factory build information rather than relying on a generic model listing.

The 2019 U.S. brochure lists a six-speed manual and an optional automatic across the Classica, Lusso, and Abarth choices. A used shopper therefore has more than one way to find an automatic 124 Spider, but the car’s year and trim still need to be confirmed. A listing that says only “automatic Fiat 124” is incomplete: ask for the VIN, trim, service records, and a photograph of the equipment label.

On either car, examine clutch engagement, brake-pedal feel, shift quality, and evidence of fluid leaks. Roof preference is subjective. The RF may appeal to someone who wants a hardtop design and a more enclosed cabin when the roof is raised. A conventional fabric roof can be quick to operate and mechanically straightforward, but the condition of its fabric and seals matters on an older car. Do not infer that one model has more luggage room simply from the roof style; the supplied Mazda specifications do not provide a directly comparable cargo measurement.

Miata Sport, Club, and Grand Touring
The 2026 announcement identifies Sport, Club, and Grand Touring as the key U.S. trims for the comparison. Sport and Club are manual-only. Grand Touring adds the automatic choice. Equipment, suspension tuning, wheel and tire packages, seating details, and driver-assistance features can vary by trim, so use the exact window sticker when comparing dealer cars.
Do not describe a Club as merely a cosmetic step above Sport or a Grand Touring as only an automatic package. The trim determines which transmission you can select and may affect the equipment that matters to you. If your priorities are a manual gearbox, a particular suspension setup, or the RF body, write those requirements down before shopping and reject listings that do not document them.
124 Spider Classica, Lusso, and Abarth
The 2019 brochure separates the 124 Spider into Classica, Lusso, and Abarth. Classica and Lusso are listed at 160 hp; Abarth is listed at 164 hp and has distinct equipment. Lusso and Abarth can carry different comfort, appearance, and chassis details from a base Classica, but the exact contents depend on the model-year specification and options.
Ask the seller to identify the trim from the VIN or original paperwork. Badges can be replaced, wheels can be changed, and aftermarket exhausts can make a car look like a higher trim. Confirm the engine output, transmission, roof, seats, wheels, brakes, and factory options against the original documentation. That prevents you from paying a premium for an appearance package that the car does not actually have.

Practicality and luggage
Only one directly verified cargo figure is available here: the 2019 Fiat owner manual lists 4.9 cubic feet, or 140 liters, of trunk volume. That is enough to plan around a pair of soft weekend bags, but hard-sided luggage may not fit as expected because trunk openings and interior shapes matter as much as volume.
No like-for-like Mazda cargo figure is established in the supplied material. Do not claim that the Miata or Fiat has more usable space. Instead, bring the bags you actually use to a viewing, measure the opening, and check whether the roof mechanism occupies part of the compartment. Two roadsters with similar published volume can accommodate very different luggage because of wheel-arch intrusion, depth, and aperture shape.
Also inspect the cabin for storage, the passenger footwell, and the space behind the seats. Those areas are useful for small items but should not be treated as a substitute for a trunk. - Choose the roof design first: conventional convertible configuration or the RF retractable-hardtop design, where available.
- Choose the transmission next. Sport and Club are manual-only; Grand Touring is the trim with the available six-speed automatic in Mazda’s announcement.
- Confirm the exact equipment, destination region, dealer availability, and current price on the vehicle’s window sticker and local dealer paperwork.
- Arrange a drive that includes low-speed steering, a rougher road, highway cruising, and repeated roof operation if the car is an RF.
The announcement establishes specifications, not a guaranteed inventory level or a price for every location. A dealer may have only certain colors, roofs, or transmissions, so call ahead and verify that the car you want is physically available.
If you are buying a used 124 Spider
- Set a target year and trim before comparing advertisements. The figures in this comparison are specifically for the 2019 U.S. car.
- Request the VIN, title status, maintenance invoices, accident history, and confirmation of the engine and transmission.
- Check cold-start behavior. A seller who warms the car before you arrive may be hiding starting, smoke, noise, or warning-light problems.
- Drive the car until fully warm. Test clutch take-up or automatic shifts, turbo response, steering, brakes, cooling, and the convertible roof.

Regional specifications: do not mix U.S. and EMEA numbers
Fiat’s UK and EMEA launch specification is a separate market document. It lists 140 hp, 240 Nm of torque, a 4,054 mm overall length, and a 140-liter boot. Those figures must not be transferred to a U.S. 124 Spider. The U.S. brochure lists 160 hp for Classica and Lusso and 164 hp for Abarth, while the U.S. owner manual lists 184 lb-ft.
Some listings import vehicles or copy specifications from another market. Before using a number to compare cars, identify the country of sale, model year, trim, engine calibration, and measurement units. Converting 240 Nm to pound-feet does not make the UK car mechanically identical to the U.S. model; market-specific emissions equipment, tuning, and equipment can differ.
What the available evidence cannot decide
The official specifications establish engine outputs, transmissions, roof design, and the Fiat trunk figure.
