The Mazda page assigns the Miata an 8.9/10 reliability score, while the two-seater page assigns it 8.8/10. Those results are strong evidence that the Miata performs well in iSeeCars’ longevity analysis, but they are not the same thing as a controlled scientific experiment or a guarantee that every individual Miata will be trouble-free.
The “12-million-car” description refers to the scale of iSeeCars’ vehicle data. Its two-seater explanation says the analysis estimates how likely vehicles are to reach a high-mileage odometer threshold. The pages do not publish a full methods appendix, a Miata-specific sample size, observation years, controls or confidence intervals, so the rankings should be read as comparative estimates rather than universal promises.

What the 2026 rankings actually say
There are two relevant iSeeCars pages, and they answer slightly different comparison questions. On the 2026 Mazda reliability page, the MX-5 Miata ranks first among the Mazda models shown with an 8.9/10 reliability score. On the 2026 two-seater ranking page, it ranks first among two-seaters with an 8.8/10 score.
The one-tenth difference is not explained on the accessible pages. It may reflect different comparison groups or calculations, but the published material does not establish why. Therefore, there is no single official Miata number to substitute for both figures: 8.9 belongs to the Mazda ranking and 8.8 belongs to the two-seater ranking.

Both pages describe iSeeCars’ broader best-car rankings as using data from more than 12 million cars to assess longevity and value retention, with safety information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That wording supports saying iSeeCars analyzed a very large vehicle dataset. It does not support calling the work a randomized trial, a laboratory test or proof that every Miata reaches a particular mileage.
How the “12-million-car” analysis works—and what it does not prove
What is measured
On the two-seater page, iSeeCars says its reliability score is based on analyzing over 12 million vehicles to estimate each model’s likelihood of reaching a high-mileage threshold on the odometer. In practical terms, the approach is aimed at durability over a vehicle population: models that are more likely to remain on the road into high mileage can rank better than models that disappear earlier.
The Mazda page similarly describes proprietary research into the longest-lasting vehicles in each segment. These are ranking estimates created by iSeeCars, not repair records for one named owner and not a teardown of individual engines, transmissions or chassis.

What the published pages leave unspecified
- The exact observation period for the vehicles included.
- The number of Miatas in the underlying sample.
- The precise high-mileage threshold and statistical controls used in the calculation.
- Confidence intervals or margins of error around either score.
- Whether equipment, climate, maintenance history, driving style or accident history were adjusted in a way that can be independently audited from the page.
Those omissions matter when interpreting the headline. A large dataset can make a population comparison more informative, but size alone does not turn a proprietary ranking into a controlled experiment. Nor does it remove the variation between a carefully maintained car and one that has been neglected, modified or damaged.
Where the Miata stands against other Mazda models
The Mazda reliability page lists the Miata above the other Mazda models shown. The scores provide useful brand-level context, although they are still iSeeCars’ ranking values rather than a prediction for a particular vehicle.

This table answers a narrow question: how the listed models rank on that iSeeCars page. It does not mean the Miata is a better choice for every driver. A buyer who needs rear doors, cargo capacity, all-weather practicality or towing capability is solving a different problem from a buyer choosing a lightweight two-seat sports car.

Reliability is not the same as value, safety or ownership cost
One reason headlines can mislead is that a vehicle can score well on durability while producing different results on other measures. iSeeCars presents those dimensions separately, and the Miata’s published figures illustrate why they should not be merged.

The 150,968.9-mile, 24.8-year and $1,508 figures are estimates reported by iSeeCars. They are not warranties, invoices or expected outcomes for every used Miata. “Annual purchase cost” is also not the same as total annual ownership cost: it does not, on the cited page, establish what an owner will spend on fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, taxes or financing.
What this means if you are shopping for a Miata
Use the ranking as a population-level signal
The strongest defensible takeaway is comparative. In iSeeCars’ 2026 data, the Miata appears unusually durable relative to the Mazda models listed and to other two-seaters. That makes reliability a reasonable positive factor when you build a shortlist.

Still inspect the individual car
A model ranking cannot reveal the condition of the specific car in front of you. Before buying, obtain the vehicle history, confirm the title status, inspect for accident or corrosion damage, check that the maintenance records are coherent and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Those checks are not contradicted by the ranking; they address questions the ranking does not answer.
Separate the decision criteria
Write down the priorities that matter for your use rather than treating the reliability score as a substitute for all of them:

- Usability: seating, storage, weather exposure and the driving environment, which the reliability score does not measure.
Why a high ranking can coexist with repairs
Reliability rankings describe tendencies across many vehicles. They do not say that a car will never need repairs. Components wear, maintenance can be skipped, and previous owners can alter a vehicle’s condition. A high-ranking model can therefore contain both excellent examples and costly individual cases.

How to read the “confirmed what Miata drivers knew” framing
The headline is an attention-grabbing interpretation, not a finding that iSeeCars tested a belief held by every Miata driver. The accessible source material shows that iSeeCars’ proprietary rankings place the MX-5 Miata first in two comparisons. It does not establish what all owners believed, and it does not prove individual dependability.
Likewise, “12 million cars” should be attached to the publisher’s data scale. It should not be presented as 12 million Miatas, 12 million controlled observations of the same model or a guarantee that every car will reach the estimated lifespan. Keeping those distinctions in the wording makes the conclusion both more modest and more accurate.
