There is no universal winner. A sound US-market 1992–94 Mazda MX-3 GS is the better choice if you want an unusual 1.8-liter V6, a practical hatchback and four seats. A Honda CR-X may suit you better if you prefer its particular generation, lighter-feeling handling and simpler four-cylinder character—but “CR-X” covers substantially different cars. Identify the generation, market and trim before comparing engines or prices, then let the condition of the individual car decide.
First, identify which Honda CR-X you mean
The name CR-X does not describe one fixed specification. Honda’s archived Japanese data distinguish the 1987–92 CR-X Si hatchback from the 1992–99 CR-X del Sol SiR. They differ in body style, seating, engine and output, so treating them as interchangeable can produce a misleading comparison with the Mazda.

1987–92 CR-X Si
Honda Japan’s archive, with data current as of February 1992, lists this generation as a four-seat car measuring 3.755 metres long on a 2.300-metre wheelbase. Its 1.590-litre DOHC four-cylinder is rated at 130 PS at 6,800 rpm, with five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions available. Those are Japanese-market figures; equipment and outputs for North American cars can differ.
1992–99 CR-X del Sol SiR
The later del Sol is a different, two-seat model rather than a continuation of the earlier hatchback’s body. Honda Japan lists a 1.595-litre B16A producing 170 PS with a manual transmission or 155 PS with an automatic. These are Japanese-market ratings and use PS, not SAE horsepower. They should not be presented as the specification of every CR-X sold elsewhere.

The Mazda being compared
This article focuses on the US-market MX-3 GS V6 sold for 1992–94. The broader MX-3 range continued after the GS ended, and US 1995 cars retained only a four-cylinder engine. A seller calling a later four-cylinder car a “GS” should therefore be checked against the VIN, original equipment and documentation.
At-a-glance comparison
| Item | Mazda MX-3 GS | Honda CR-X examples in the cited archives | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market and years | US-market GS V6, 1992–94 | Japanese-market 1987–92 Si and 1992–99 del Sol SiR | Confirm year, body, trim and original market before comparing listings. |
| Engine | 1.8-litre, 24-valve DOHC V6 | 1.590-litre DOHC four-cylinder in the Si; 1.595-litre B16A in the del Sol SiR | Different markets and rating systems make the figures illustrative, not a controlled test. |
| Published output | 130 hp at 6,500 rpm; 115 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm | 130 PS at 6,800 rpm for the Si; 170 PS manual or 155 PS automatic for the del Sol SiR | Do not convert or rank these numbers without accounting for PS versus SAE hp and the different trims. |
| Seating | Four seats, with a cramped rear bench | Four seats in the archived Si; two in the del Sol SiR | The body-style decision may matter more than engine output. |
| Body and drive | Front-drive, two-door hatchback | Earlier Si hatchback; later del Sol two-seat model | Inspect the exact shell rather than relying on the badge. |
| Transmission | Five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic | Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic listed for the archived Si; del Sol SiR output varies by transmission | Driving feel and engine response can change significantly with the gearbox. |
| Brakes and weight | Four-wheel discs; ABS optional with the manual; 2,541 lb listed for a manual GS | Comparable figures are not established in the cited Honda material | Use the Mazda figures as period specifications, not as evidence of a surviving car’s condition. |
How the MX-3 GS drives
A V6 that rewards revs
Consumer Guide’s 2019 retrospective describes the US GS’s 1.8-liter twin-cam V6 as producing 130 hp at 6,500 rpm and 115 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm. The period road-test description says it is quiet and eager once revving, but makes little power below 3,000 rpm. That gives the Mazda a distinctive, high-revving personality rather than strong low-speed shove.
The five-speed manual is the more natural match for that engine because it lets the driver keep the V6 in its useful upper range. The four-speed automatic is easier in traffic but can leave the engine below its strongest part of the rev band. This is a character observation, not a measured acceleration comparison with any CR-X.
Agile responses, conspicuous noise
The used-car guide praises the MX-3’s agile handling and quick steering response. Its low, snug driving position contributes to the sports-coupe feel. The same guide rates ride quality and quietness less favorably: road, tire and wind noise are prominent at speed. A test drive should include coarse pavement and highway speed, because a car that feels entertaining around town may be tiring on a long trip.

How the CR-X alternatives differ
The earlier hatchback
The archived Japanese Si’s 130 PS rating at 6,800 rpm indicates a similarly rev-oriented approach on paper, but it is not a direct performance result against the Mazda’s 130 SAE horsepower. The UK buying guide for 1988–91 cars characterizes the second-generation CR-X as fun-handling. That is an editorial assessment of UK-market cars, not a head-to-head test and not a guarantee for every surviving example.
Its four-seat hatchback layout most closely matches the MX-3’s basic concept. Seating, safety equipment, gearing and engine specification still depend on the market and trim, so verify the actual car rather than importing Japanese archive data into a North American listing.
The del Sol
The del Sol’s two-seat configuration changes the use case completely. The Japanese SiR’s 170 PS manual and 155 PS automatic figures describe a higher-output B16A model, but they cannot be used to claim that every del Sol, or every CR-X, has that performance. A del Sol buyer is choosing an open-top, two-seat format, not the four-seat hatchback practicality represented by the Mazda and earlier CR-X.

MX-3 hatchback utility
The Mazda has a fold-down rear backrest and a deep cargo area, useful advantages over many small coupes. The liftover is high, however, so heavy or bulky items must be lifted farther than the cargo depth initially suggests. The rear seat is shaped for two but is tight for adults; it is better viewed as occasional seating than as a comfortable long-distance bench.

CR-X practicality depends on generation
The 1987–92 Si’s four-seat hatchback arrangement can serve a similar occasional-passenger role, subject to the specific trim and market. The del Sol’s two seats eliminate that flexibility but may be exactly what an enthusiast wants. Do not compare a two-seat del Sol with the Mazda on family practicality; they answer different transport needs.
Period fuel and specification figures
Fuel numbers in the Mazda sources are historical observations or period EPA listings. They are not promises for a 30-year-old car, whose economy can be affected by maintenance, tires, gearing, corrosion and modifications.

The manual GS is listed at 2,541 lb, and the 1994 model year brought dual airbags according to the retrospective. Those are useful identification points, but a replacement airbag, altered interior or engine swap can make a surviving car differ materially from the brochure specification.

What to inspect before buying either car
1. Establish identity and paperwork
- Record the VIN and confirm the model year, original market, engine, transmission and trim.
- Compare the VIN with registration, title and service invoices. A “V6 GS” badge alone is not proof of an original GS.
- Ask for maintenance records, especially timing-belt work, cooling-system service, brake work and previous rust repair.
- Document every modification, including engine swaps, suspension changes, wheels, exhausts and alarm wiring. Non-original parts can complicate diagnosis and sourcing.
2. Check the structure before the cosmetics
Put the car on a lift and inspect chassis rails, floor seams, suspension mounting points, jacking points and subframes. Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, welds, overspray and underseal hiding repairs. Surface rust is easier to budget for than perforation in a load-bearing area. A qualified mechanic should assess any concern before money changes hands.
3. MX-3-specific recall and wear checks
Consumer Guide’s used-car coverage records a 1992–93 automatic shoulder-belt rail that could wear and jam, plus a 1992–95 front coil-spring corrosion issue in 19 states and the District of Columbia where heavy road salt was used. These are historical recall summaries, not proof that a particular car is affected or repaired. Ask a Mazda dealer or the relevant national authority to check open campaigns by VIN, then inspect the belt mechanism and front springs regardless of paperwork.
Examine the V6 for oil leaks, overheating evidence, neglected belts and brittle hoses. Confirm that the manual clutch engages cleanly or that the automatic shifts without flare or delay. Test the four-wheel discs for vibration, pull and seized calipers; if the car has optional ABS, verify that the warning lamp behaves correctly during the start-up check.
4. CR-X rust and parts checks
Auto Express’s 2018 UK buying guide for 1988–91 CR-X models specifically recommends inspecting wheel arches, footwells, door bottoms and drainage channels. It also warns that body panels and trim can be harder to source, and that UK and Japanese equipment can differ. Treat those as inspection prompts rather than a rust-rate statistic for North American cars.

Use a magnet and bright light where appropriate, lift carpets if the seller permits, and inspect moisture trails around hatch, roof and door seals. Confirm that glass, weatherstripping, lamps, interior plastics and trim are present before buying: mechanical repairs may be straightforward while a missing body or interior piece can stop a restoration for months.
5. Test every installed system
- Start the engine cold and listen for abnormal tapping, rattling, belt noise or exhaust leaks.
- Confirm stable temperature at idle and after a road test.
- Operate headlights, indicators, wipers, demisters, heater, air conditioning, windows, locks and the hatch or roof mechanism where fitted.
- Check that warning lamps illuminate at start-up and then go out appropriately.
- Drive over smooth and broken surfaces to detect knocks, steering pull, wheel bearing noise and brake vibration.
Parts, maintenance and ownership reality
Neither source set establishes a current, location-specific price or a general reliability winner. At this age, maintenance history and the availability of model-specific trim can matter more than the original badge. Obtain parts prices before purchase for rusted body sections, glass, weather seals, suspension components, brake hardware and electronic modules.
The MX-3’s unusual V6 is its defining attraction, but it also makes engine-specific service knowledge important. A clean manual GS with documented belt and cooling-system work can be a better ownership proposition than a cheaper automatic with deferred maintenance. Conversely, a well-kept four-cylinder CR-X may be easier for a particular local specialist to support than a neglected Mazda. That is a local parts-and-labor question, not a universal model statistic.

Which one fits your priorities?
| Your priority | More logical starting point | Conditions to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Unusual engine and four-seat hatchback | MX-3 GS | It must be a genuine 1992–94 V6, preferably with complete maintenance records and a sound shell. |
| Light, compact hatchback with the earlier CR-X identity | 1987–92 CR-X Si | Verify the market-specific engine, rust condition and availability of body and trim parts. |
| Two seats and the del Sol format | 1992–99 CR-X del Sol | Do not use four-seat CR-X or MX-3 assumptions; inspect roof, seals and the exact engine and transmission. |
| Quiet highway cruising | Whichever individual car is better sealed and maintained | The Mazda guide specifically notes substantial road and wind noise, so test at speed rather than infer comfort from photographs. |
| Lowest restoration risk | The car with the cleaner structure and better documentation | A model preference cannot compensate for corrosion, poor repairs or missing parts. |
A practical buying process
- Shortlist by identity. Reject listings that cannot establish the VIN, engine, body style or original market.
- Request records and underside photos. Ask specifically about rust repair, collision damage, timing-belt work, recalls and modifications.
- Inspect in daylight, then arrange a lift inspection. Look at the shell before becoming distracted by paint, wheels or an engine bay presentation.
- Drive from cold to fully warm. Test clutch or automatic operation, steering, brakes, cooling and highway noise.
- Price the missing pieces. Get realistic quotes for body, trim, suspension and safety repairs in your area.
- Verify recall status by VIN. Historical campaign descriptions do not establish completion on an individual car.
- Make the offer based on condition. Do not pay a premium merely because a badge, engine claim or advertised rarity cannot be documented.
Verdict: choose the car, then the badge
The MX-3 GS is the clearer choice for an enthusiast who specifically wants a small V6, a manual-friendly high-revving character and a usable hatchback. Its compromises—weak response below 3,000 rpm, tight rear seating and pronounced noise—are acceptable only if the example is structurally sound and properly maintained.
The CR-X is not one opposing specification. The earlier Si is a four-seat hatchback with its own market-specific engine and handling character; the later del Sol SiR is a two-seat model with very different Japanese-market output figures. Select the generation first, then judge rust, parts, records and driving fit.
When two cars are otherwise comparable, buy the one with the healthier shell, clearer history, functioning equipment and a mechanic’s approval. The available historical material cannot justify declaring either model universally faster, more reliable or more valuable today.
