The Mazda Furai was a working concept car built around a race-derived chassis and a three-rotor rotary engine. Mazda unveiled it as a vision of how motorsport could inform future road-car design—not as a model intended for sale. In August 2008, during a Top Gear shoot at Bentwaters Parks, the car caught fire and was destroyed. The magazine’s later account describes what happened, but does not establish the fire’s mechanical cause.
What was the Mazda Furai?
Mazda announced the Furai on 12 December 2007, ahead of its planned world debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It was part of the company’s Nagare design program, whose name means “flow,” and was intended to connect the visual language of racing cars with ideas for future production-car design.
Design director Franz von Holzhausen described the intent in Mazda’s announcement: “Furai purposely blurs boundaries that have traditionally distinguished street cars from track cars.” That was a statement of design ambition, not a promise that the Furai would become a road-going model.
The Furai was more than a static styling mock-up. Mazda built it on race-derived hardware and Top Gear later described it as a rolling testbed for design and aerodynamic changes. The magazine reported that Mazda did not intend to race or sell it publicly. Taken together, those descriptions make it best understood as a running design and engineering demonstration, rather than a production-car prototype.

What engine and chassis did the Furai have?
Mazda’s 2007 announcement specified a Courage C65 chassis, a three-rotor rotary engine rated at 450 hp, and E100 ethanol fuel. These are the specifications Mazda announced for the concept; the release is not independent verification of performance.
- Chassis: Courage C65, derived from the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
- Engine: three-rotor rotary.
- Announced output: 450 hp, according to Mazda in 2007. Top Gear’s 2008 report expressed the figure as 450 bhp.
- Fuel: E100 ethanol, according to Mazda.
Mazda’s announcement and the cited coverage do not establish verified acceleration, top speed, or lap-time figures, so those numbers should not be treated as part of the Furai’s confirmed specification.

What happened to the Mazda Furai?
Top Gear’s 2015 retrospective places the fire at Bentwaters Parks on 19 August 2008, while the magazine was filming the car. In its account, a flame became visible near the engine bay; the driver stopped and got clear, but the fire spread and the Furai was destroyed. Top Gear later described its 2008 drive as the only time anyone outside Mazda had driven the car.
This is the magazine’s account of the incident, not a forensic report. It records where a flame was seen and how the fire unfolded, but it does not identify a definitive mechanical cause. The available accounts also do not independently document the current location of any surviving remains.

- The model breathtakingly captures the car?s dynamic form with roof and side windows down.
- Features realistic depictions of the underside and interior.
- Metal transfers are included to recreate emblems and side mirror surfaces.
- The model can be assembled as left- or right-hand drive versions, and includes markings to recreate Japanese, U. S. and rest-of-the-world market cars.
Why did the Mazda Furai catch fire?
The documented account does not say why the fire started. Seeing flames near the engine bay does not, by itself, establish which component failed or what caused it. Without a confirmed investigation or a more definitive account, claims about fuel, maintenance, driver actions, or fault would be speculation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the Furai ever going to be a production car?
No. Mazda presented the Furai as a concept, and Top Gear reported that the company had no plan to sell it publicly or race it. Its purpose was to demonstrate Nagare design and explore design and aerodynamic changes on a functioning car. The Furai’s road-car influence was therefore an idea the concept was meant to communicate, not evidence of a planned production version.
