The Mazda CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid’s key advantage over the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is its ability to drive on electric power alone for short trips. Mazda rates the 2026 CX-90 PHEV for up to 26 miles of around-town all-electric range. That can be useful if you can charge regularly and many of your routine trips fit within that range; it is not a blanket win over the Toyota, which offers more cargo room in the cited 2025 comparison.
What is the Mazda CX-90 PHEV’s advantage?
The 2026 CX-90 PHEV pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery. Mazda says the system produces 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using its recommended 91-octane premium fuel. Mazda’s current US product page describes its electric range as “up to 26 miles” of around-town driving, and gives total range of up to 500 miles using both electric and gasoline power. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed real-world results. Mazda USA’s 2026 CX-90 PHEV page and 2026 model-year announcement provide the specifications.
The 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid in Kelley Blue Book’s comparison is a conventional hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid. It cannot be plugged in to charge for a separate electric-only driving range. The distinction is the point: the Mazda can use stored grid electricity for short trips, while the Toyota’s hybrid system combines its engine and electric motor without the CX-90’s plug-in capability. When the plug-in advantage is useful
The CX-90 PHEV makes the most sense for drivers who have reliable access to charging and whose errands or commute often fit within Mazda’s estimated electric range. If you do not charge, the plug-in hardware cannot deliver that electric-only benefit. Once the battery is depleted, the vehicle uses gasoline and hybrid operation; Mazda says it switches to the gas engine and cannot operate without gasoline in the tank.

Mazda recommends unleaded premium fuel rated at 91 octane or higher. It says 87-octane regular fuel can be used, but performance may be reduced. That matters when weighing the PHEV’s electric capability against the Toyota’s conventional-hybrid setup, especially if your driving rarely allows you to charge.
Charging the CX-90 PHEV
Mazda says the CX-90 PHEV uses a J1772 port and supports Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging. The included portable Level 1 cable works with a common 120-volt outlet. Mazda estimates about 11 hours for Level 1 charging and about 2.5 hours with Level 2; actual time can vary. A Level 2 home charger is optional, so consider your charging routine and home electrical capacity before buying or installing one.

The CX-90 PHEV is not compatible with Level 3 DC fast charging, Tesla Supercharging, or CHAdeMO DC charging, according to Mazda’s charging information. Mazda also says the MyMazda app can find nearby ChargePoint-network stations; owners can link accounts in the app to view available stalls, check current pricing, and pay for sessions.
How the 2025 comparison differs beyond charging
The figures below are Kelley Blue Book’s comparison of 2025 vehicles, not a like-for-like 2026 specification sheet. Its Toyota fuel-economy figure is for the standard Grand Highlander Hybrid, not the separate Hybrid MAX powertrain.

The cargo figures make the Toyota the stronger fit if third-row and luggage space are priorities. The CX-90’s clearest differentiator in this comparison is electric-only driving, not towing. Mazda’s current 2026 product page says its towing figure requires proper equipment with a tow hitch.

Mazda’s current US page lists 2026 CX-90 PHEV starting MSRPs of $50,695 for Preferred, $55,500 for Premium Sport, and $58,700 for Premium Plus. Mazda says these prices exclude options, tax, title, license fees, and destination. They should not be directly compared with Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 retail prices as if both were current, on the same basis, and for the same model year.

For context, KBB’s 2025 comparison lists retail prices including destination of $51,475 for the CX-90 PHEV Preferred and $45,545 for the Grand Highlander Hybrid LE. KBB also provides fair-purchase estimates tied to ZIP code 92620, which it says update weekly and vary with vehicle condition and other factors. Check current local pricing for matching model years, trims, and equipment before deciding. Toyota’s 2026 Grand Highlander specifications page is available, but the detailed comparison figures above are for 2025.

Which one fits your driving?
- Consider the CX-90 PHEV if you can charge consistently and want the option of electric-only driving for short trips.
- Consider the Grand Highlander Hybrid if you prioritize the larger cargo figures in the 2025 comparison, want conventional-hybrid operation on regular fuel, or are comparing against a lower listed 2025 entry price.
- Compare the exact powertrains and model years. The 245-hp Toyota figure is for the standard 2025 hybrid; Hybrid MAX is a distinct 362-hp option. The cited Toyota comparison figures should not be treated as 2026 specifications.
