The Mazda CX-6e is a European-market electric SUV built through Mazda’s collaboration with China’s Changan, and its technology and cabin feel less like a traditional Mazda than the brand’s familiar models. That does not make it a simple rebadge: Mazda says it shaped the global car’s design and tuned its ride and handling for European preferences. Published reviews praise its styling, roomy rear seats and efficiency, but raise questions about screen-heavy controls and whether its driving character feels distinctively Mazda.
This review focuses on the rear-wheel-drive European battery-electric CX-6e. China-market EZ-60 variants, prices, range figures and driver-assistance equipment are different and should not be assumed to apply to the CX-6e sold elsewhere.
Is the Mazda CX-6e really a Mazda?
It is a Mazda-branded global model developed with substantial Chinese technical roots—not a car whose origin can be described accurately by a single national label. Mazda announced the CX-6e on January 12, 2026, following its debut at the Brussels Motor Show on January 9. The company says the global model builds on the Mazda EZ-60 introduced at Auto Shanghai 2025, and that Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., Ltd. is its partner for electrification and intelligent technologies. Mazda also says it optimized the European car’s handling and ride comfort for local preferences. Mazda’s announcement
Independent road-test reporting identifies the CX-6e as the Europe-specific version of the EZ-60 and says it shares a platform and powertrain with the Mazda 6e. Specialist China-market reporting describes the EZ-60 as based on Changan’s EPA1 platform and closely related to the Deepal S07. Those links establish its collaborative and Chinese technical lineage; they do not establish that Mazda made no contribution to the vehicle’s development. The more useful question for a buyer is whether the finished car delivers the qualities they want from a Mazda. Here, the published reviews point to a departure from the brand’s traditional cabin and driving cues, alongside Mazda styling and a chassis tuned for the regional market. “Feels Japanese” is a subjective impression, not an engineering specification.
What does the European CX-6e offer?
Mazda Europe’s preliminary specification gives the rear-wheel-drive CX-6e a 78 kWh LFP battery, a 190 kW (258 PS) rear motor and up to 484 km of WLTP range. The same release lists combined energy consumption of 18.9–19.4 kWh/100 km and 0 g/km WLTP CO2. Mazda cautions that the figures are preliminary and that range varies with equipment and individual factors. Mazda Europe’s specifications
For a UK Takumi Plus, Autocar lists 78 kWh nominal and 77 kWh usable capacity, rear-wheel drive, 255 bhp, 214 lb ft, 300 miles of WLTP range, a maximum DC charging power of 200 kW, 0–62 mph in 8.1 seconds and a 115 mph top speed. Top Gear also reports 300 miles WLTP and 200 kW peak DC charging. The differing power figures use different units and source specifications; the figures above should be read with their stated trim and attribution. A 200 kW maximum is peak charging capability, not a typical charging rate or a charging-time estimate. Autocar’s UK Takumi Plus listing Top Gear’s review

How much does the CX-6e cost, and when is it available?
Prices and availability depend on market and trim. Mazda Europe’s press information lists a Belgian starting price of €46,290 including VAT, or €44,760 in Luxembourg, and says dealer availability is expected in summer 2026. Those are country-specific launch figures, not a single Europe-wide price. Mazda Europe’s launch information
For the UK, Autocar lists £45,450 for the Takumi Plus it specifies; Top Gear says the base Takumi starts just below £43,000. These are different trim references, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. Check current local listings for the market and specification you are considering. Mazda’s January 2026 global notice scheduled the European launch for summer 2026 and Australia for later in the year. Its May 2026 investor presentation gave the second half of 2026 for Australia and New Zealand. These are launch plans stated on those dates, not confirmation that the car is currently available in every market. Mazda’s January launch notice Mazda’s May investor material

What do reviews say about the CX-6e’s strengths?
Distinctive exterior design
Autocar praises the styling, and Top Gear also describes the CX-6e as a striking-looking SUV. The design is one of the clearest points of appeal identified across the reviews. Autocar Top Gear
Room for rear passengers
Top Gear highlights a roomy rear cabin and comfort on longer trips. Buyers who regularly carry adult passengers should still check the actual rear-seat fit and cargo space in their local version, since the cited reviews do not establish a cargo-capacity figure here. Top Gear’s review
Efficiency and competitive positioning
Autocar praises the car’s efficiency and competitive pricing. Top Gear says the CX-6e exceeded its claim during that outlet’s own driving; that is a publication-specific road impression, not a guarantee of real-world range for every driver or condition. Both outlets present it as a well-priced alternative in the electric-crossover class, but prices vary by country and trim. Autocar’s review Top Gear’s review

A broad technology feature set
The CX-6e’s technology offering is part of the appeal, but the reviews also point to a trade-off: many functions are controlled through the central screen. The breadth of features matters less if the layout makes frequently used controls difficult to reach while driving.
What are the CX-6e’s drawbacks?
Screen-led controls and no conventional driver dials
Autocar and Top Gear both describe a cabin that leans heavily on a large touchscreen. Climate functions, drive modes, regenerative braking and driver-assistance settings are nested in screen menus, according to the reviews. The driver gets a head-up display rather than conventional instrument dials. Buyers who prefer physical controls or a traditional instrument cluster should try the interface in person before committing. Autocar’s review Top Gear’s review
Driving character may not satisfy Mazda traditionalists
Both reviewers question whether the CX-6e’s dynamics deliver the distinctive feel associated with Mazda. That is a judgment about driving character, not evidence that the chassis lacks regional tuning. Anyone choosing it for a particular Mazda-like steering or handling feel should arrange a test drive rather than infer that quality from the badge. Autocar’s review Top Gear’s review

Active-safety intervention may feel assertive
Top Gear says it would prefer less assertive active-safety intervention. Driver-assistance calibration is personal: check which systems are fitted to the local trim and try their settings and behavior on a test drive. Top Gear’s review

The CX-6e and EZ-60 are closely related, but their specifications and equipment should not be conflated. CarNewsChina reports that China offers the EZ-60 as both a battery EV and a range-extender, and that a September 27, 2026 report covered China-market LiDAR-assisted trims. It cites prices from 145,900 yuan for the reported LiDAR range-extender Pro to 166,900 yuan for the EV Max, and lists China-market EV CLTC ranges of 585–600 km. Those prices, powertrains, range figures and LiDAR-related claims are for reported China-market EZ-60 versions; they are not European CX-6e prices, WLTP figures or confirmation of European equipment. CarNewsChina’s September 2026 report
What should you compare before choosing one?
Compare the CX-6e with same-market versions of its alternatives, rather than mixing a UK trim’s price with another country’s range or equipment. Top Gear names the Kia EV6, Skoda Enyaq and Polestar 2 as rivals; Autocar also lists the Deepal S07, Ford Explorer and Tesla Model Y. Top Gear’s rival list Autocar’s rival list
Quick Recap
- Price and trim: compare current local prices and the equipment included at each level.
- Range and usable capacity: distinguish WLTP estimates from other test cycles, and nominal battery capacity from usable capacity.
- Charging: compare peak DC capability, but do not treat it as the rate you will sustain throughout a charging stop.
- Everyday usability: try climate, drive-mode, regenerative-braking and driver-assistance controls; check rear-seat comfort and cargo space against your needs.
- Driving and safety preferences: test the steering, ride and active-safety behavior on the roads you typically use.
- Ownership support: verify local servicing and public-charging support before purchase; these are market-specific and are not established by the cited reviews.
