Mazda CX-5 vs Proton X70: Space, Performance and Running Costs in Malaysia (2026)

The Proton X70 costs less to enter and publishes fuel and warranty figures; the Mazda CX-5 offers a different 2.5-litre powertrain. Space and total running-cost winners remain unproven without matched measurements and service data.

Short answer: The Proton X70 is the lower-entry-price choice and has a published fuel figure plus a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty and six free labour services. The Mazda CX-5 2.5 High costs more but uses a larger naturally aspirated petrol engine and has a higher published horsepower rating. The available official material does not establish which vehicle has more usable cabin or boot space, nor which has lower total running costs, because comparable current measurements, Mazda fuel data and matched service schedules are not published in the reviewed pages.

What the current Malaysian specifications actually show

The comparison below uses current manufacturer information reviewed in October 2026. Prices are listed figures for different variant line-ups, not like-for-like quotations. Registration costs, insurance, dealer charges, promotions and regional terms can change the amount you pay.

Price: a large gap that makes trim matching essential

The listed entry point for the X70 sits well below the CX-5 grades shown by Mazda. The arithmetic difference between RM106,800 and RM166,900 is RM60,100, while the gap to the CX-5 Panoramic Sunroof grade is RM63,100. Those are useful budget markers, not a value verdict: they compare an X70 starting price with specified CX-5 grades and may not represent equivalent equipment.

The price difference affects more than a deposit. It can change the financed amount, monthly repayment, insurance premium, cash-flow buffer and the amount available for tyres or scheduled maintenance. A lower sticker price can still produce a different ownership budget if the chosen variant has different equipment, warranty coverage or financing terms. Conversely, a higher price may buy features you would otherwise add separately. Only a written quote for the exact cars can settle that question.

Build a like-for-like quote

  1. Write down the exact variant name, model year and registration region for each vehicle.
  2. Ask each dealer for the on-the-road price, separating vehicle price, registration, road tax, insurance, fees and accessories.
  3. Request a dated list of standard equipment rather than relying on a model-range brochure.
  4. Record finance rate, deposit, term and total repayment separately from the cash price.
  5. Check whether any discount is still valid. Proton’s January 2026 announcement described a rebate for registrations before 31 March 2026; that deadline has passed and it should not be treated as a live offer in October.
  6. Ask whether the quoted price is tied to a particular stock unit, colour, registration month or finance package.
  7. Obtain the cancellation, booking-fee and delivery terms in writing before paying a deposit.

A fair value judgement can then compare the equipment and ownership terms of the exact cars you can actually order, rather than comparing a headline starting price with a better-equipped CX-5 grade.

Performance and drivetrains

Mazda CX-5 2.5 High

Mazda lists a 2,488 cc SKYACTIV-G petrol engine producing 185 hp at 6,000 rpm and 257 Nm at 4,000 rpm, paired with a six-speed EAT automatic. The larger displacement and the stated peak torque speed describe the engine’s design, but they do not tell you how quickly the car accelerates in traffic, how it behaves on a hill or how much the transmission changes gears. Those outcomes require a drive in the specific vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2.5 High is also listed with 225/55R19 tyres. That size is part of the stated grade specification, so confirm that the demonstrator and the vehicle on your order have the same wheels and tyres. A different wheel or tyre package can alter ride feel, replacement choices and the price of future tyres.

Proton X70

Proton lists a 1.5TD engine with 181 PS and 290 Nm, driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Its torque figure is higher on the specification sheet, while the output is expressed in PS rather than hp. Because hp and PS are different measurement units and the figures are not independent tests, a simple “more powerful” conclusion from the two numbers would be misleading.

A dual-clutch gearbox and a conventional six-speed EAT are different hardware descriptions. That distinction tells you what to inspect, not which is better. During a drive, pay attention to low-speed response, reversing, parking manoeuvres, hill starts and the transition between gears. Do not infer long-term durability or repair cost from the gearbox name alone; ask for the warranty scope and post-warranty service pricing.

What to test on the road

  • Pull away repeatedly from a stop, including a junction where a quick gap matters.
  • Drive at low speed in a car park and in stop-start traffic to feel throttle and clutch calibration.
  • Use a short motorway or expressway section to check joining, overtaking and engine noise.
  • Try a moderate incline with passengers if possible; note whether the gearbox holds a gear or hunts.
  • Test reversing, parking sensors and camera visibility, because powertrain figures say nothing about daily manoeuvrability.
  • Repeat the same route in both vehicles, with similar fuel loads and the driver’s seat adjusted for the same driver.
  • Try a cold start if the dealer permits it, then repeat the test after the engine and transmission are warm.

Do not convert the manufacturer ratings into a claimed 0–100 km/h time or a subjective smoothness verdict. No such comparative test is established here.

Fuel use and the cost of operating each car

Proton’s January 2026 announcement gives the X70 a manufacturer-published figure of 6.9 L/100 km. The reviewed current Mazda page does not provide a comparable CX-5 fuel rating. Fuel consumption also changes with traffic, speed, tyre pressure, load, air-conditioning use and driving style, so the X70 number is a reference rating rather than a promise of an owner’s result.

The figure means that, under the test conditions used by Proton, 6.9 litres are consumed for every 100 kilometres. It does not tell you how many litres your congested commute will use, and it cannot be directly compared with an absent Mazda rating. Treat it as one input in a budget rather than as proof that the X70 will always be cheaper to run.

Calculate your own fuel budget without inventing a Mazda figure

  1. Estimate your annual distance from service records or your typical weekly driving.
  2. For the X70, use 6.9 L/100 km only as the published reference, then model a higher real-world scenario for congested routes.
  3. For the CX-5, obtain the current official figure for the exact variant or collect fuel receipts after a consistent period; do not substitute the X70 rating.
  4. Multiply litres consumed by the pump price you actually pay in Malaysia. Keep fuel, insurance, road tax, tyres and servicing as separate lines.
  5. Run the calculation again for highway-heavy and urban-heavy use. One blended estimate can hide a large difference in your routine.
  6. Record odometer readings and litres purchased over several fills rather than relying on a single trip computer value.

Servicing and wear items

The reviewed sources do not establish matched scheduled-maintenance prices or intervals for the two vehicles. Proton states six free labour services, but “free labour” does not automatically mean every filter, fluid, inspection, part or consumable is free. Ask for the service booklet, the list of included items and the prices that apply after the included visits.

For the CX-5, request the current maintenance schedule and a written estimate for each required visit. Include engine oil, filters, brake components, batteries, tyres and any transmission-related work in a multi-year budget. Until both schedules are documented on the same basis, there is no supportable total-running-cost winner.

When comparing service plans, separate labour from parts and note the mileage or time trigger for each visit. Ask whether inspections are included, whether genuine parts are required for warranty compliance, and whether a missed appointment changes coverage. Keep these answers with the quote so a promotional service promise is not confused with a permanent maintenance price.

Space, dimensions and everyday practicality

Mazda publishes the CX-5 2.5 High’s exterior dimensions as 4,690 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,695 mm in height. The reviewed official X70 material does not provide a comparable current set of cabin, boot or measured exterior figures. Exterior length and styling cannot establish rear legroom, headroom, shoulder room or usable luggage capacity.

Length and width can also be deceptive in a family SUV. Seat thickness, dashboard depth, door trim, wheel-arch intrusion and the height of the luggage floor all affect usable room. A taller roof does not automatically create more rear headroom, and a longer body does not guarantee a larger boot once the rear seats and suspension hardware are accounted for.

How to make a meaningful space comparison

  1. Confirm that both cars are the same model year and exact grade; seat designs and equipment can change usable room.
  2. Measure front and rear legroom with the driver’s seat set for the tallest regular occupant.
  3. Check rear-seat width with the child seats or adults you actually carry.
  4. Measure luggage space with the parcel shelf in place, then test the height and width of the hatch opening.
  5. Load your own stroller, suitcases, tools or mobility equipment. A manufacturer volume figure, if later supplied, may use a different method.
  6. Check door opening angles, sill height, under-floor storage and whether the rear seats fold flat enough for your use.
  7. Try the rear middle seat, cupholders, charging points and visibility from every passenger position.

Until an equivalent X70 measurement set and a consistent luggage test are available, the defensible conclusion is that space is unconfirmed rather than that one model is roomier.

Equipment, driver assistance and safety-related claims

Both manufacturers list convenience and driver-support equipment, but availability depends on variant. Mazda’s 2.5 High page describes i-Activsense functions including adaptive lighting, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane support, brake support, radar cruise control and Cruising & Traffic Support. Proton’s X70 material lists six airbags, wireless phone integration and connected functions alongside driver-support features.

The presence of a named system does not establish identical operating behaviour. Sensor placement, software settings, speed limits, warnings and driver override rules can differ. A feature shown in a range brochure may also belong to a higher grade than the vehicle you are financing.

Those lists identify equipment; they do not establish identical operating behaviour, calibration or crash-test performance. Before signing, ask the dealer to demonstrate each system in the exact grade:

  • Which sensors are fitted, and where are their limitations described?
  • Does adaptive cruise bring the car to a stop and resume automatically, or only operate above a minimum speed?
  • Can lane support be adjusted or switched off, and what warning appears when markings are unclear?
  • Are wireless smartphone functions standard on the quoted variant or dependent on a higher grade?
  • What happens to alerts when a trailer, roof load or temporary spare wheel is fitted?
  • Which functions remain available when the camera or radar is obscured by rain, dirt or a number plate frame?

Do not turn a feature list into a claim that either vehicle is safer overall. Independent safety ratings and local test conditions would be needed for that conclusion.

Warranty and dealer support

Proton lists a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and six free labour services. Confirm the start date, transferable status, exclusions, parts coverage, servicing deadlines and whether missed intervals affect claims. Ask for the exact wording rather than assuming “free labour” covers parts and fluids.

The reviewed current CX-5 page does not establish a complete warranty or maintenance package. Obtain Mazda’s written terms for the vehicle you are ordering, including mileage limits, duration, roadside assistance, scheduled-service inclusions and prices after any introductory coverage. This missing information prevents a fair ownership-cost ranking.

Which buyer should choose which?

Choose the X70 when these priorities dominate

  • Your purchase budget is anchored to the lower listed starting price.
  • A published fuel reference and unlimited-mileage warranty are important planning inputs.
  • You prefer the equipment and connected functions offered on the exact X70 grade you can afford.
  • You are willing to verify dual-clutch behaviour in traffic and obtain a detailed post-service cost schedule.
  • You want to preserve more of the initial budget for insurance, accessories, fuel or a contingency fund.

Choose the CX-5 when these priorities dominate

  • You specifically want the CX-5 2.5 High’s larger-displacement petrol engine and six-speed automatic.
  • The Mazda’s published driver-support equipment and the cabin feel from your test drive justify the additional purchase budget.
  • You can obtain acceptable written warranty, maintenance and fuel information before committing.
  • The 225/55R19 tyre size and other running-cost implications fit your budget; verify replacement tyre specifications, not just the wheel appearance.
  • You value the exact Mazda seating position, controls and driving response enough to accept the higher listed price.

Wait and gather more information when space or total cost is decisive

If your decision depends on boot capacity, rear-seat room or a five-year ownership total, neither headline specification sheet is sufficient. Get measured dimensions, a load test and matched service schedules before choosing. That is a more reliable process than inferring practicality from exterior styling or fuel economy from engine size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple five-year ownership worksheet

Create one row for each year and keep assumptions visible. Start with the cash or financed vehicle price, then add insurance, road tax, fuel, scheduled servicing, tyres, batteries, brakes and other consumables. Put warranty-covered items in a separate column rather than assuming they cost nothing. For finance, show deposit, monthly payments, interest and total repayment separately from operating expenses.

Use the same annual distance for both cars. Enter the X70’s 6.9 L/100 km as a labelled manufacturer reference and leave the Mazda cell blank until you obtain an official figure or measured receipts. Add a low-use and high-use scenario, because a driver covering 8,000 kilometres and one covering 25,000 kilometres will experience the fuel and mileage limits very differently. This method produces a transparent range instead of a false single-number winner.

A disciplined showroom checklist

  1. Photograph the specification sheet and VIN/model-year information for the exact demonstrator or order vehicle.
  2. Confirm the variant-specific engine, gearbox, wheel and tyre details.
  3. Take the same route in both cars, including traffic, an incline and a faster road.
  4. Repeat the drive with the driver’s seat set identically and note visibility, seat support, noise and gearbox responses.
  5. Load your normal luggage and test all rear seats, charging points and the powered or manual tailgate operation if fitted.
  6. Request dated written quotes showing cash price, on-road charges, insurance, financing and every promotion.
  7. Collect warranty and service documents, including what “free labour” excludes.
  8. Recalculate fuel, tyres, servicing, insurance and road tax using your annual distance and current Malaysian prices.
  9. Check the tyre placard and replacement specification before ordering the first new set.
  10. Save copies of brochures and quotations because equipment, prices and promotions can change between visits.

Use the resulting worksheet to decide. The available official figures point to a lower initial entry cost and a published economy reference for the X70, while the CX-5 offers its own engine and equipment proposition at a higher listed price. They do not, on their own, settle space, real-world performance or lifetime running costs.

What Proton says about the 2026 X70

At the January 2026 launch, Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir Rashid said, “The 2026 PROTON X70 reflects PROTON’s commitment to continuous refinement and delivering what our customers truly value.” This is Proton’s positioning statement, not independent evidence of refinement or customer outcomes. Treat it as context for the launch, then rely on your test drive and written terms for the purchase decision.

Which has more power, the CX-5 or X70?

Mazda lists 185 hp and 257 Nm for the CX-5 2.5 High. Proton lists 181 PS and 290 Nm for the X70. The figures use different power units and are manufacturer ratings, not acceleration tests, so they do not prove which is quicker.

Which one uses less fuel?

Proton publishes 6.9 L/100 km for the X70 in its January 2026 announcement. The current Mazda page reviewed does not show a comparable CX-5 figure. Without matching test data or your own consistent fuel records, there is no defensible economy winner.

Is the X70 warranty better?

Proton lists a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty and six free labour services. Mazda’s current warranty and maintenance terms were not established on the reviewed CX-5 page, so obtain its written terms before making a complete comparison. Confirm what Proton’s free labour excludes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which SUV has more boot space?

The available official figures do not establish a current winner. Mazda publishes the CX-5’s exterior dimensions, but no comparable current X70 cabin and cargo measurement set or matched luggage test was located. Take your own luggage to both showrooms.

Are the CX-5 and X70 driver-assistance systems equivalent?

Not necessarily. Both manufacturers list driver-support equipment, but systems vary by grade and can differ in sensors, operating limits and calibration. Ask for a demonstration in the exact variant and do not treat a feature list as a crash-test result.

What tyre size does the CX-5 2.5 High use?

Mazda lists 225/55R19 for the CX-5 2.5 High. Confirm the load and speed ratings and the exact vehicle fitment before buying replacements. The reviewed X70 material did not state a comparable tyre size.

Should I wait before choosing between them?

Wait if boot space, rear-seat room or a multi-year ownership total is decisive. Obtain measured dimensions, a consistent luggage test, current fuel information and matched service schedules. If your priorities are already clear, a same-route test drive and written quote can narrow the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The X70 is the lower-priced entry point and has published 6.9 L/100 km fuel data, a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty and six free labour services. The CX-5 2.5 High costs substantially more and publishes 185 hp, 257 Nm and 225/55R19 tyres. Neither model can be named the space or total-running-cost winner from the comparable official information available; verify the exact trim, measured practicality, fuel evidence and written ownership terms before ordering.
