Choose the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 if you want standard all-wheel drive (AWD), a conventional gasoline powertrain, and Mazda’s announced lower starting MSRP. Neither is the universal winner. The right choice depends on how many miles you drive, what you carry, whether you need AWD, and the equipment and price of the exact trims you compare.
This is a U.S.-market 2026 model-year comparison. Mazda redesigned the CX-5 for 2026, so specifications from earlier CX-5 generations should not be used to judge this vehicle. Honda’s figures below are its published 2026 specifications and EPA ratings. Manufacturer numbers are useful for comparison, but actual fuel economy, dealer pricing, and inventory can differ.

At a glance: the tradeoff between these SUVs
| Question | 2026 Mazda CX-5 | 2026 Honda CR-V |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Drivers who want standard AWD, a gas engine, and a lower announced entry MSRP | Drivers who want hybrid efficiency, more published cargo capacity, or a choice of gas and hybrid powertrains |
| Powertrain | 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder, six-speed automatic | 190-hp turbo gasoline engine or 204-hp two-motor hybrid system |
| AWD | Standard i-Activ AWD at launch | Available on selected trims; not standard across the range |
| Best published combined fuel economy | 26 mpg | 40 mpg for several 2WD hybrid trims; 37 mpg for several common AWD hybrid trims |
| Published maximum cargo volume | 33.7 cu. ft. behind the rear seat; 57.5 cu. ft. with it folded | Up to 39.3 cu. ft. behind the rear seat and 76.5 cu. ft. with it folded on several trims |
| Announced/configurator starting price | $29,990 starting MSRP; $1,595 destination and handling in most of the U.S., effective Aug. 11, 2026 | CR-V LX from $30,920 on Honda’s configurator |
The price figures are not a complete out-the-door comparison. Destination treatment, equipment, taxes, registration, dealer charges, incentives, optional AWD, and hybrid trim premiums can change the amount you actually pay.

The 2026 CX-5 is an all-new U.S. model. Mazda’s launch specification uses a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G inline four-cylinder producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, connected to a six-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ AWD. Mazda described the setup this way in its January 13, 2026 launch release:
#1 Best Overall
“At launch, CX-5 will be powered by Mazda’s venerable SkyActiv-G 2.5L inline four-cylinder engine, which produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, and is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD).”
That is Mazda’s product description, not an independent road-test conclusion. It also means you should not assume that the new CX-5 has the dimensions, trim equipment, ride tuning, or performance characteristics of a previous CX-5.
The CR-V gives you two fundamentally different choices. Its gasoline version uses a 190-hp turbocharged engine. Its hybrid version uses a 204-hp two-motor system. AWD availability depends on trim, so an AWD CR-V quote must identify both the powertrain and trim. A front-wheel-drive (2WD) hybrid and an AWD hybrid are not interchangeable for either price or fuel economy.

Fuel economy: the CR-V hybrid has a substantial numerical advantage
Mazda’s 2026 U.S. specification deck lists the CX-5 at 24/30/26 mpg city/highway/combined. Honda lists several 2026 CR-V ratings as follows. These are manufacturer-published figures based on 2026 EPA ratings; weather, traffic, temperature, payload, speed, tires, and driving style affect real-world results.
| Vehicle and configuration | City | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Mazda CX-5 (AWD, gasoline) | 24 mpg | 30 mpg | 26 mpg |
| 2026 Honda CR-V gasoline, 2WD | 28 mpg | 33 mpg | 30 mpg |
| 2026 Honda CR-V gasoline, AWD | 27 mpg | 31 mpg | 29 mpg |
| 2026 Honda CR-V hybrid, 2WD | 43 mpg | 36 mpg | 40 mpg |
| 2026 Honda CR-V hybrid, common AWD trims | 40 mpg | 34 mpg | 37 mpg |
| 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport Hybrid, AWD | 38 mpg | 33 mpg | 35 mpg |
The most direct conclusion is about powertrain, not badge: a 2WD CR-V hybrid’s published 40 mpg combined rating is 14 mpg higher than the CX-5’s 26 mpg, while a common AWD CR-V hybrid’s 37 mpg combined rating is 11 mpg higher. A gasoline CR-V also has a numerical edge over the CX-5, though the difference is smaller. If you drive a high annual mileage, estimate fuel cost with your own miles and local gasoline prices rather than assuming the EPA gap translates into a fixed dollar amount.
When the CX-5’s gas-only setup makes sense
- You prefer a conventional engine and automatic transmission rather than a hybrid system.
- You want AWD without moving to an AWD option or a specific CR-V trim.
- Your annual mileage is modest enough that the hybrid’s higher purchase price, if applicable, may not pay back quickly.
- You plan to keep the vehicle in conditions where standard AWD is a priority, while still comparing tires and winter-driving technique.
When the CR-V hybrid is the logical starting point
- You commute long distances or accumulate many highway and urban miles each year.
- Fuel consumption is a major part of your ownership budget.
- You can accept the hybrid trim’s equipment, price, and cargo configuration.
- You want to choose between 2WD efficiency and AWD traction rather than receiving only one drivetrain configuration.
Cargo space and family practicality
Honda publishes more cargo volume than Mazda in the 2026 figures. Several CR-V gasoline trims provide up to 39.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 76.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. Many CR-V hybrid variants list 36.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 71.8 cubic feet behind the first row. Mazda’s 2026 specification deck lists 33.7 cubic feet with the second row upright and 57.5 cubic feet folded.
| Configuration | Behind second row | Behind first row with rear seat folded |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Mazda CX-5 | 33.7 cu. ft. | 57.5 cu. ft. |
| 2026 Honda CR-V gasoline, several trims | Up to 39.3 cu. ft. | Up to 76.5 cu. ft. |
| 2026 Honda CR-V hybrid, many variants | 36.3 cu. ft. | 71.8 cu. ft. |
These figures are not a guarantee that every object fits better in the CR-V. Cargo-floor height, opening shape, seat angle, wheel-well intrusion, and the position of a cargo cover matter. Bring the items you actually use to a dealer and load them. A stroller, pet crate, folded wheelchair, musical instrument, work case, or large suitcase can expose differences that a cubic-foot number cannot.

Mazda says the redesigned CX-5 has larger door openings and more rear room than the prior CX-5. That is a comparison with its predecessor, not an independent measurement against the CR-V. For a family purchase, install your own rear-facing and forward-facing seats in both vehicles, check front-seat legroom with the seats properly positioned, and verify that the child can reach the buckle without interference from a booster or center-seat passenger.

AWD and powertrain choice
AWD is standard on the CX-5 at launch, so the base vehicle does not require an AWD upgrade. Honda’s CR-V offers AWD on selected trims, and the EPA rating changes when you move from 2WD to AWD. The CR-V AWD gasoline figure is 29 mpg combined versus 30 mpg for 2WD gasoline; common AWD hybrid trims are listed at 37 mpg combined versus 40 mpg for 2WD hybrids. The TrailSport Hybrid AWD is listed at 35 mpg combined.
AWD can help the vehicle transmit power on slippery surfaces, but it does not shorten braking distances on ice or replace winter tires. Compare the tires fitted to the exact stock number, the spare-tire arrangement, ground clearance, and the dealer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Neither manufacturer’s feature list by itself proves superior snow performance.
Price: compare equipped vehicles, not just headlines
Mazda announced a $29,990 starting MSRP for the 2026 CX-5. Mazda also lists a $1,595 destination and handling charge in most of the United States, effective August 11, 2026. Honda’s configurator lists the 2026 CR-V LX from $30,920. The headline difference is $930 before destination treatment and before you compare equipment, drivetrain, taxes, registration, dealer documentation fees, accessories, financing, and incentives.
Because the CX-5 includes AWD at launch while a CR-V LX is a 2WD gasoline model, those two starting figures are not automatically equivalent. A fair worksheet should show:

Ask for a written out-the-door quote on a specific vehicle identification number. Pricing and inventory can change during the 2026 model year, so confirm the quote shortly before purchase.
Safety and driver-assistance equipment
Mazda lists radar cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and emergency lane keeping among CX-5 driver-assistance equipment. Honda lists Honda Sensing functions including collision mitigation braking, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist for the CR-V. Exact availability can vary by trim, package, market, and production date.
Those lists describe available or included technology; they do not establish that one SUV will perform better in a crash. Before buying, check the equipment on the actual window sticker and consult current independent crash-test results for the exact model year and body style. Also test the warning volume, camera view, steering intervention, and adaptive-cruise behavior yourself, because a feature that is technically present may not operate the way every driver prefers.

Choose the CR-V for high annual mileage
If you drive many miles and can use a hybrid trim, the CR-V’s 40 mpg combined 2WD rating or 37 mpg combined rating for common AWD hybrid trims gives it the strongest published efficiency advantage in this comparison. Confirm the hybrid’s cargo figure, purchase price, and AWD requirement before calculating payback.

Choose the CR-V for frequent cargo hauling
The CR-V has the larger published cargo area in both rows-up and seats-folded measurements. It is the better numerical starting point for families, pet owners, travelers, and people who routinely carry bulky equipment. Still perform a physical fit check, especially if your cargo is tall, rigid, or unusually shaped.
Choose the CX-5 for standard AWD
The CX-5 removes the need to select an AWD option at launch. That simplifies shopping for a buyer who wants AWD on every configuration under consideration. Compare its tires and ground clearance with the CR-V trim you are considering; drivetrain layout alone does not answer every winter-driving question.
Choose the CX-5 for a conventional gasoline SUV
The CX-5 uses a 187-hp gasoline four-cylinder and six-speed automatic. That may appeal to drivers who do not want a hybrid powertrain, charging-related questions, or hybrid-specific trim packaging. The tradeoff is the lower published fuel-economy rating compared with every CR-V configuration listed above.
Choose based on the actual deal, not the advertised starting point
A well-equipped CR-V with AWD or a hybrid system can cost more than its LX headline. A CX-5 with dealer accessories or a higher trim can also move far above its announced base MSRP. Get comparable written quotes and include destination and dealer charges before deciding that one is cheaper.
A practical back-to-back shopping procedure
- Define your non-negotiables. Write down AWD, hybrid versus gasoline, minimum cargo room, rear-seat requirements, towing or roof-carrying needs, and a maximum out-the-door payment.
- Select comparable trims. Match drivetrain first, then safety equipment, seat material, parking aids, heated features, and convenience options. Do not compare a 2WD base CR-V with an AWD, heavily equipped CX-5 and call the result a trim-equivalent test.
- Check the window stickers. Record MSRP, destination, installed accessories, fuel-economy rating, tire size, and every dealer fee.
- Install your car seats. Use the exact seats and positions your household needs. Check front-seat comfort and buckle access.
- Load your real cargo. Bring the stroller, crate, luggage, sports equipment, or work gear that drives your purchase.
- Drive both on the same day. Use similar roads and traffic. Evaluate visibility, seat comfort, steering effort, brake feel, hybrid transitions, engine noise, parking sensors, and adaptive-cruise behavior.
- Request written out-the-door quotes. Ask each dealer to identify destination, documentation, accessories, taxes, registration, financing assumptions, incentives, and trade-in treatment.
- Recheck availability and fitment before signing. Confirm that the vehicle is a 2026 model, the quoted trim has the promised equipment, and any accessory is approved for that model year and trim.
Accessories and fitment cautions
Mazda lists custom-fitted all-weather floor mats, cargo mats, trays, nets, and cargo-carrying accessories for the CX-5. Honda lists CR-V all-season mats, cargo organizers, and seat-back protectors. These can be useful for wet climates, pets, children, or frequent hauling, but they are optional and should be included in the out-the-door calculation only if you actually need them.
If you shop for a product through a marketplace, verify the listing’s model year, trim, drivetrain, seat configuration, and return policy. A 2026 redesign can change attachment points and floor shapes, and a product described generally as fitting a CX-5 or CR-V may fit only certain generations or trims. Current marketplace listings and exact cross-trim fitment should be confirmed before purchase.
What the published specifications cannot tell you
- They do not predict your personal fuel economy.
- They do not provide an independent reliability score or long-term ownership-cost result.
- They do not establish crash-test superiority.
- They do not show whether a stroller, crate, or car-seat arrangement works for your household.
- They do not guarantee a dealer’s price, inventory, incentive, or financing rate.
- They do not replace a current inspection of tires, visibility, controls, ride comfort, and noise on your test drive.
Bottom line for the 2026 decision
The Honda CR-V is the stronger match for a buyer who values hybrid efficiency or needs the larger published cargo area. The Mazda CX-5 is the stronger match for a buyer who wants standard AWD, prefers a conventional gasoline drivetrain, or finds its announced starting MSRP and local quote more attractive. Compare the exact trims, destination charges, dealer fees, safety equipment, cargo fit, and car-seat installation before committing. A back-to-back drive and a written out-the-door quote will resolve the tradeoffs that a specification sheet cannot.
