There is no winner based on the badge alone. Choose the used Mazda B-Series or Toyota Tacoma whose exact year, cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, ratings, recall status and maintenance history match your work. A well-maintained truck with the right configuration is a safer buy than a higher-rated model with frame corrosion, missing service records or an unresolved recall.
Start with the truck’s exact configuration
“Mazda B-Series” and “Toyota Tacoma” each describe many different trucks. Engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab, bed, two- or four-wheel drive and factory tow equipment can change payload and trailer limits substantially. Compare trucks from the same model year and similar configurations whenever possible. A 2009 B-Series specification cannot be treated as a direct answer for every Tacoma, and a 2016 Tacoma rating cannot be applied to earlier Toyota models.

Use the vehicle certification label, tire-and-loading label, owner’s manual and VIN-specific recall record for the individual truck. Manufacturer brochures are useful for narrowing a search, but the label on the truck you are buying controls its legal and practical limits.

The Mazda figures are published 2009 configuration figures. Toyota’s figures come from selected 2012, 2014 and 2016 releases, so the table is a guide to configuration and year—not an apples-to-apples ranking.

What the 2009 Mazda B-Series offers
Engines, cabs and drivetrains
Mazda offered the 2009 B-Series as a two-door Regular Cab or a four-door, four-seat Cab Plus. The B2300 used a 2.3-liter DOHC four-cylinder. The B4000 used a 4.0-liter SOHC V6. Mazda’s newsroom summary states that four-wheel drive was offered only with the Cab Plus and 4.0-liter engine, so a four-cylinder truck should not be assumed to have factory 4WD.
Dimensions and bed utility
The listed B2300 Regular Cab length is 187.5 inches. The B4000 Cab Plus 4 is listed at 202.9 inches. Both configurations in the specification sheet have a 71.8-inch cargo-box floor length. Measure the actual bed before buying accessories: bed rails, tailgate design and cab configuration determine whether a tonneau or other equipment fits. Mazda listed a soft tonneau as an available accessory, but fitment still needs to be verified by year, cab and bed.
How to interpret the Mazda ratings
The 5,600-pound trailer figure belongs only to the B4000 Cab Plus 4 automatic entry in Mazda’s chart. The manual version is rated much lower, and the B2300 entries are lower still. The same chart lists different payloads for the B2300 Regular Cab and B4000 Cab Plus 4. Those figures assume the listed configuration and do not tell you how much weight remains after passengers, tools, fuel and dealer-installed equipment are loaded.

2012 Tacoma
Toyota’s 2012 release lists a 2.7-liter four-cylinder producing 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, plus a 4.0-liter V6 producing 236 horsepower and 266 lb-ft. Access Cab and Double Cab trucks with the V6 Tow Package can reach 6,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity. The qualification matters: a four-cylinder, a different cab or a truck without the package may have a different rating.
2014 Tacoma
Toyota described Regular, Access and Double Cab combinations and the same 2.7-liter and 4.0-liter powertrains. Its cited material identifies a 6,500-pound maximum for a specifically equipped V6 Tow Package Access Cab. Do not transfer that number to every 2014 Tacoma.

2016 Tacoma
The redesigned 2016 Tacoma introduced a new-generation 2.7-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V6. Toyota reported up to 6,800 pounds for properly equipped V6 models under SAE J2807. That test-standard figure applies to the qualifying 2016 configuration; it does not retroactively change earlier Tacoma ratings.
Towing: match the trailer to the truck, not the advertisement
For towing, first identify the truck’s maximum trailer rating, gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), gross combined weight rating (GCWR), axle ratings, hitch rating and tongue-weight limit. The lowest applicable limit controls. A truck may have enough engine power yet still be limited by its hitch, rear axle, tires or combined rating.

Mazda’s owner’s manual defines payload as occupants plus cargo and says trailer tongue load counts as cargo. Use this process on either brand:
- Read the payload figure on the tire-and-loading label inside the driver’s door area.
- Subtract the weight of every occupant, tool, spare part, cooler, fuel container and other cargo.
- Subtract dealer- or aftermarket-installed equipment, such as a cap, winch, step, heavy hitch or bed slide.
- Include the trailer’s actual tongue load in the remaining payload calculation.
- Confirm that the loaded truck remains below GVWR and each axle rating, then check the trailer’s brakes, lights and safety chains.
Never use a brochure maximum as permission to exceed the label on the truck. Mazda warns that exceeding GVWR or axle ratings can impair handling, damage components or cause loss of control.
Choose the right tow configuration
A B2300 is suited to lighter trailers within its specific rating. A B4000 can offer considerably more capacity, but only in the cab, transmission and equipment combination shown in the Mazda chart. Later Tacoma V6 Tow Package trucks can have higher published limits, yet the exact year and package must be verified. If the trailer is near the limit, weigh the loaded combination at a public scale instead of relying on an empty-trailer specification.

Power, fuel use and operating trade-offs
The 2009 B2300’s four-cylinder has the lowest output and the best published EPA figures in Mazda’s chart. The B4000 V6 provides more torque and a higher tow rating in the qualifying configuration, with lower EPA city/highway figures. Automatic and manual transmissions also change both towing and fuel ratings, as the Mazda table shows.
Tacoma fuel economy is not directly ranked here because the cited Toyota material does not provide a matched year-by-year table against the 2009 Mazda. Obtain the EPA rating for the exact Tacoma cab, drivetrain and transmission, then adjust expectations for tire size, 4WD use, payload, trailer work, rust-related brake drag and engine condition. A used truck’s real consumption can differ materially from its original laboratory rating.
Cab, passengers and cargo: decide what must fit at once
Regular Cab versus extended and Double Cab layouts
The Mazda Regular Cab is a two-door, two-seat arrangement. Its Cab Plus adds rear seating and the longer body, but rear-seat space and access are not equivalent to a full-size crew cab. Tacoma listings from the cited years include Regular, Access and Double Cab forms. Count the people who will ride regularly, including child seats, and test the seating position rather than assuming that an extended cab is sufficient.
Bed length and payload interaction
A longer bed helps with lumber, motorcycles and work boxes, but the bed itself does not increase payload. The 2009 Mazda specification lists a 71.8-inch cargo-box floor for the cited B2300 and B4000 configurations. Check the actual Tacoma bed length, wheel-well clearance and tailgate opening for your equipment. A bed rack, cap or toolbox consumes payload before any cargo is added.
Daily maneuvering
Compare overall length, turning space and parking needs. The listed B4000 Cab Plus 4 is longer than the B2300 Regular Cab. Tacoma cab and bed combinations likewise vary. If the truck will be used in older garages, narrow trails or city spaces, measure the parking location and consider mirror width and turning circle during the inspection drive.

Used-truck condition matters more than the emblem
No comparable published reliability statistic was established for these two nameplates. Do not convert anecdotal owner reports or complaint totals into a model-wide reliability score. Judge the individual truck.
Frame and body inspection
- Inspect the frame, crossmembers, spring mounts, steering mounts and suspension attachment points for rust scaling, perforation, fresh undercoating or welded repairs.
- Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps and overspray that may indicate collision repair.
- Check the bed floor, cab mounts, brake lines, fuel lines and spare-tire carrier from below.
- Be cautious when corrosion is hidden by thick coating; ask for photographs or a second opinion.
Mechanical checks
- Start the engine cold and listen for knocks, timing noise, belt squeal or excessive smoke.
- Confirm smooth transmission engagement, including reverse and low gears.
- Test 4WD engagement on a suitable surface if fitted, and verify that warning lights clear after startup.
- Inspect tires for age, uneven wear and load rating; check brakes, steering play, leaks and cooling-system condition.
- Request maintenance invoices, fluid-service records and proof of major repairs rather than relying on a seller’s verbal history.
Recall and VIN safety checks
Before purchase, run the exact VIN through the manufacturer’s recall system and obtain documentation for completed repairs. Mazda’s January 2018 notice covered a subset of model-year 2006 B-Series trucks with Takata driver- and passenger-inflator campaigns 18V038 and 18V039. Mazda said approximately 160 trucks were affected and instructed owners in the affected driver-airbag population to stop driving and contact Mazda Customer Experience at 800-222-5500. That notice does not mean every B-Series is affected; only a VIN lookup establishes status.
Ask the seller to show the recall completion record, not merely a statement that the truck was “checked.” If an open stop-drive recall appears, do not test-drive or purchase the truck until the repair path is confirmed with Mazda.

Light-duty commuting and occasional hauling
A sound B2300 Regular Cab can make sense when your loads are modest, you need a compact footprint and the truck’s four-cylinder rating covers the trailer and cargo. Prioritize rust-free structure, complete service records and acceptable fuel use over a larger engine you will not use.

Frequent towing
Start with the loaded trailer’s weight and tongue load, then shop only trucks whose exact configuration exceeds those figures with margin. A B4000 automatic Cab Plus 4 or a specified Tacoma V6 Tow Package may fit a heavier workload, but verify the label, hitch and axle ratings on the candidate vehicle.

Four-wheel-drive work
For the 2009 Mazda, factory 4WD availability is tied to the Cab Plus and 4.0-liter engine. On any Tacoma, inspect transfer-case operation, driveshafts, universal joints and differential leaks. A 4WD badge without documented service is not a capability guarantee.
Family transportation
Choose the cab that accommodates every passenger and child restraint without forcing the front seats into an unsafe position. Tacoma Double Cab and Mazda Cab Plus layouts differ in access and rear-room, so install your actual seats during the inspection.
A disciplined buying process
- Write the job down. Record passenger count, trailer weight, tongue load, bed cargo, 4WD needs and typical terrain.
- Filter by year and configuration. Separate B2300 from B4000, manual from automatic, and Tacoma engine, cab and tow-package combinations.
- Verify ratings. Photograph the door labels and compare them with the owner’s manual and hitch plate.
- Run the VIN. Check open recalls, title history and proof of recall completion.
- Inspect before negotiating. Use a lift or independent mechanic for the frame, drivetrain, brakes, 4WD system and leaks.
- Price the repairs. Deduct documented near-term work—tires, brakes, rust remediation, cooling parts or drivetrain repairs—from your offer.
- Drive it loaded if possible. A road test with representative cargo can reveal sagging suspension, overheating, transmission flare or brake pull.
- Keep a reserve. Older compact trucks can need age-related hoses, seals, sensors and suspension parts even when they pass a basic inspection.
How to judge asking price without a universal number
Current market prices were not established for this comparison, and a single “fair price” would be misleading. Compare each candidate with similar year, mileage, cab, drivetrain, rust condition, title history and equipment. Obtain written estimates for defects and compare the total purchase-plus-repair cost with cleaner examples. A cheaper truck that needs structural work can cost more than a better-maintained truck with a higher asking price.

- Using maximum trailer weight while ignoring tongue load and passenger payload.
- Assuming a 4WD badge proves the system works.
- Skipping a frame inspection because the body looks clean.
- Buying before checking the VIN for an open recall.
- Comparing EPA figures from different years or configurations as though they were a controlled test.
Bottom line
Buy the best individual truck that meets your measured requirements. The 2009 Mazda B-Series offers a simpler light-duty path in B2300 form and more published capability in the properly equipped B4000, while selected Tacoma V6 configurations from 2012, 2014 and 2016 carry higher documented tow ratings. Those advantages matter only when the truck’s labels, equipment and condition support them. Verify every capacity by VIN and label, reject structural rust and unresolved safety recalls, and let maintenance history decide between otherwise similar trucks.
