Maxon’s BIKEDRIVE AIR S is a compact mid-drive announced at Eurobike 2025. The company rates the drive unit at 2 kg, with 90 Nm maximum torque and up to 620 W peak output. Its “triples torque” headline uses the original AIR’s 30 Nm figure cited by New Atlas; maxon support has also documented an earlier AIR configuration at around 40 Nm.
What is the maxon BIKEDRIVE AIR S?
The AIR S is maxon’s second-generation compact e-bike mid-drive, introduced in a media release dated June 17, 2025. It is designed as an integrated system: the motor is built into a bicycle frame and works with a battery and other system components, rather than being presented as a universal aftermarket motor kit.
Maxon describes the system as suitable for mountain, gravel and urban bikes. That broad application claim does not mean every frame can accept it; fit and configuration depend on the bicycle manufacturer and market.
How much torque does it have, and what does “triples torque” mean?
Maxon specifies 90 Nm maximum torque for the AIR S. New Atlas compared that with a 30 Nm figure for the original AIR, making 90 Nm three times that reported baseline. But the earlier system’s figure was not consistent across all versions: maxon’s support FAQ, dated January 19, 2023, says the BIKEDRIVE AIR delivered around 40 Nm peak torque. The three-times claim therefore applies to the cited 30 Nm original-AIR figure, not every AIR configuration.

New Atlas also reported that the AIR S drive unit weighs 2.0 kg, compared with 1.9 kg for the earlier motor-drive unit—about 100 g more. That is a motor-unit comparison, not a comparison of complete system weights.
How does the split-cylinder layout work?
The AIR S combines a brushless internal-rotor motor with a planetary gearbox. New Atlas describes the motor and gearbox as arranged in two perpendicular cylinders. The layout keeps the bottom-bracket area compact while placing part of the drive higher in the frame, where it occupies some space in the lower down tube.

Maxon lists torque and cadence sensors and a magnesium housing with integrated splash-water sealing. The company also advertises 85% efficiency and a maximum support factor of 400%; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results established here.

Battery capacity is not a range estimate. The cited sources do not establish real-world distance per charge, which depends on the complete bike, conditions and use.

Which bikes use the maxon Air S?
New Atlas identified the Thömus Lightrider E Max and Instinctiv Ocelot as AIR S-equipped bike lines in its August 7, 2025 report. Those are dated reports, not confirmation of current inventory, exact specifications or availability in a particular country. Check the chosen bike’s current product listing or dealer for its motor, battery, frame fit and market-specific assistance configuration.
Because the motor is integrated into a bicycle system, the practical route for most riders is to consider a complete AIR S-equipped bike, not assume a standalone motor listing will fit an existing frame. Current retailer stock and an Amazon listing for the named models have not been established.

How does it compare with other compact mid-drives?
New Atlas’s 2025 Eurobike comparison reported the following figures. The listed motor weights exclude batteries; these secondary-source numbers are dated and should not substitute for current manufacturer specifications when comparing bikes.
