Its angular aluminum body is designed to be towed by a suitably equipped bike, giving one rider a bed, shelter and basic onboard amenities. New Atlas’s July 2022 feature described an early configuration; Maxmess’s later product information shows continued development and a larger Martha Komfort variant, so the older figures should not be treated as specifications for every Martha sold today.
What the Martha is—and what the 2022 feature covered
Maxmess Design, based in Wernigerode, Germany, makes the Martha bicycle camper. New Atlas introduced it in July 2022 as an angular aluminum “ebike camper” intended primarily for e-bike towing. That article is useful for understanding the original concept, but it is launch-era coverage, not a current model sheet or an independent test. New Atlas’s July 2022 report credits Maxmess Design as its source.
Maxmess’s current website says the bicycle caravan has been made and sold in small quantities for several years and notes that development continues. It also presents Martha Komfort, a larger option. The maker’s description is: “Der Fahrradwohnwagen wird bereits seit mehreren Jahren in kleinen Stückzahlen gefertigt und verkauft.” (“The bicycle caravan has been manufactured and sold in small quantities for several years.”) Maxmess Design

These measurements and equipment details belong to the configuration described by New Atlas in July 2022. They should not be assumed to apply unchanged to current variants.

- Chassis and load: The 2022 article gave a fully equipped weight of 50 kg (110 lb), a maximum payload of 25 kg (55 lb), 24-inch wheels and 22 cm (8.6 in) of ground clearance. It said the trailer worked with bikes compatible with a Weber E coupling.
- Seasonal use: New Atlas called that configuration a three-season camper and said Maxmess was working on a heater solution at the time. That is a report of the project’s status in 2022, not evidence that current versions lack heating.

How current maker information differs
Maxmess’s April 1, 2026 Martha Mobil product sheet describes a smaller, lighter version than the one represented by the 2022 article’s wheel specification. The maker lists a 2,000 × 1,000 × 900 mm body (length × height × width), about 2,500 mm overall length including the drawbar, an aluminum body and 20-inch wheels. It says the drawbar is compatible with Weber couplings. Martha Mobil product sheet, April 1, 2026

- Lightweight Chromoly Frame: At only 26.5 lb, this adult folding bike uses a chromoly steel frame to balance strength with everyday portability. Carry it upstairs, move it through the office, load it into a vehicle, or store it in tighter living spaces without the bulk of many traditional bicycles.
- Compact Folding For Everyday Storage: The folding frame, collapsible aluminum stem, adjustable seatpost, and folding pedals help reduce the bike to approximately 30.3 × 25.2 × 14.2 in for practical storage. A useful choice for apartments, offices, car trunks, RV trips, and riders with limited space.
- Shimano 8-Speed Drivetrain: A Shimano M315 shifter and Shimano M310 rear derailleur provide eight gears for smoother cadence control across city streets, bike paths, and moderate inclines. The 52T crankset and 8-speed cassette give riders useful gearing for everyday urban mobility.
- Mechanical Disc Brake Control: Front and rear mechanical disc brakes provide predictable stopping control during daily riding, while 20 × 1.5 in tires and double-wall aluminum rims support stable handling on paved roads. The compact wheel size also helps maintain responsive steering in urban environments.
- Practical Components For Daily Riding: Aluminum handlebars, folding stem, adjustable 33.9 mm seatpost, bearing hubs, and quick-release wheel hardware create a practical setup for commuting and travel. The compact design makes the bicycle easier to transport and store while remaining ready for regular city use.
The difference between the 2022 report’s 24-inch wheels and the 2026 Martha Mobil sheet’s 20-inch wheels is a reason to identify the particular model and date when comparing specs—not to assume one figure replaces the other across the line.
Martha and Martha Komfort
Maxmess describes Martha Komfort as the larger choice for broader cycle paths or roads, with more room to sit inside and more storage. The available official descriptions do not provide a full set of directly comparable measurements, weights and equipment for both variants, so a complete spec-by-spec comparison cannot be made from those details alone. Current equipment and weight information
The current Martha shop page describes an aluminum caravan with an insulated, cork-lined interior, a power bank, USB outlets, LED lights and a variable fan. It gives an approximate complete weight of 45 kg. That is the shop page’s current product information, not a directly comparable measurement for every variant or a replacement for the dated 2022 figure. Maxmess Martha shop page
Check the bicycle and hitch before buying
A trailer that is light enough to move by hand can still place substantial demands on its towing bike. Maxmess says a suitable coupling is required and recommends the Weber Type ES. Its April 2026 sheet lists a maximum trailer weight of 100 kg for that coupling, says it fits most 20–29-inch bicycles and notes that adapters may be needed. The maker excludes bicycles with horizontal dropouts and carbon frames; these are manufacturer fit guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular bike will work.

Weber describes the Type ES as its heavy-duty version of the E coupling for cargo trailers and also specifies a 100 kg maximum towing load. Other coupling types have their own limits, including restrictions for certain frame geometries and faster e-bikes. Check the exact bicycle, axle, dropout and e-bike category with Weber or a qualified bicycle shop before purchase or installation. Weber’s official coupling catalog
- Identify the exact Martha variant and confirm its current drawbar and coupling requirements with Maxmess.
- Check the bike’s frame material, dropout shape, rear axle and wheel size against the coupling maker’s fit guidance.
- Ask whether the bike needs an adapter and whether its e-bike category or speed changes which coupling is suitable.
- Have a qualified shop confirm fit and installation before towing with a loaded trailer.
What towing changes on the road
Maxmess cautions that towing changes handling. The maker advises riding in anticipation of hazards, allowing for longer stopping distances, slowing down and avoiding abrupt movements that could destabilize the trailer. These are practical cautions from the manufacturer, not independently measured stopping-distance or stability results. Maxmess’s towing guidance
