Matrix Adaptive Beam Lighting: How It Works and What It Means for Nighttime Safety

Matrix adaptive driving beams preserve high-beam light around detected traffic. Here is how they differ from low beams and automatic high-beam assist, what the evidence supports, and what to know about U.S. legality and retrofits.

Matrix adaptive beam lighting—usually called adaptive driving beam (ADB)—uses sensors and individually controlled headlamp elements to keep high-beam light on open roadway while reducing light aimed at detected vehicles. It can give a driver more forward visibility than conventional low beams without leaving the full high beam on other road users. That is a meaningful visibility advantage, not proof that ADB by itself prevents crashes.

What matrix adaptive beam lighting does

An ADB system uses a forward-looking sensing and control system to identify vehicles ahead and adjust the headlamp pattern around them. In Audi’s studied implementation, a matrix of individually controlled LEDs let the system keep parts of the high beam illuminated while creating a dark or lower-intensity shadow around detected oncoming or leading vehicles. Other ADB designs may differ; “matrix” describes a particular way of controlling light, while ADB describes the broader function.

Unlike a simple switch between low and high beams, ADB can adapt the illuminated pattern while the high beam remains active. Its purpose is to direct more light into unoccupied areas and less toward other road users. The system depends on its sensors and controls detecting traffic, so it should not be treated as a guarantee that another driver will never experience glare.

How ADB compares with low beams and automatic high-beam assist

Feature Conventional low beams Automatic high-beam assist Adaptive driving beam
Usable forward distance Uses the low-beam pattern continuously; it does not add high-beam light around detected traffic. Can use high beams when conditions permit, then switches to low beams when traffic is detected. Can retain high-beam illumination in areas outside the detected vehicle’s shadow. The supplied IIHS materials describe the function but do not give a universal distance advantage.
Glare control Does not selectively shadow detected vehicles; the driver must choose the beam setting. Reduces glare by changing between beam settings rather than selectively shaping the high beam around traffic. Adjusts the beam to reduce light aimed at detected oncoming and leading vehicles.
Curves and partially hidden vehicles Depends on the fixed beam pattern and the driver’s use of the headlights. Depends on the system detecting traffic and switching beams; it does not selectively preserve high-beam light around a vehicle. Adaptive headlights helped drivers detect low-reflectance targets inside curves up to one-third of a second earlier in an IIHS-reported 2014 study. The cited evidence does not establish how every ADB system handles partially occluded vehicles.
U.S. certification and availability Conventional headlamps are subject to applicable vehicle lighting requirements. Availability and implementation vary by vehicle. NHTSA amended FMVSS No. 108 in 2022 to allow certified ADB headlamps on new vehicles; U.S. adoption remains limited, and vehicle availability varies.
Repair, aiming and calibration Follow the vehicle maker’s requirements for headlamp replacement and aiming. Follow the vehicle maker’s requirements for the vehicle’s lighting and sensing equipment. Use manufacturer-authorized parts and service, and follow the exact vehicle’s aiming and calibration requirements. A generic bulb swap cannot be assumed to preserve compliant ADB operation.

What the safety evidence shows—and does not show

The clearest case for ADB is that it can preserve more high-beam visibility while reducing light directed toward traffic. In a 20-participant test-track study reported by IIHS and published in Procedia Manufacturing in 2015, the Audi A8 ADB condition received a mean glare-comfort rating of 7.25, compared with 6.15 for a comparison SUV’s HID low beams on a 1–9 scale. That result concerns comfort under the study conditions; it is not a crash-reduction estimate.

An IIHS-reported 2014 study found that drivers detected low-reflectance targets inside curves up to one-third of a second earlier with adaptive headlights than with regular headlights—about 15 feet at 30 mph. This supports a visibility benefit in that test, but it does not establish an identical result for every ADB-equipped vehicle or road.

Broader crash figures should not be attributed to ADB specifically. IIHS’s current overview says about half of traffic deaths occur in darkness or at dawn or dusk. It also summarizes a 2022 analysis in which vehicles with good-rated headlights had 19% fewer nighttime single-vehicle crashes and 23% fewer nighttime pedestrian crashes than vehicles with poor-rated headlights. Those figures compare headlight quality generally, not ADB against another lighting technology.

Glare matters, but it is not the only or largest lighting concern. IIHS reported in 2025 that glare was cited in only one or two of every thousand nighttime crashes across 11 U.S. states from 2015 through 2023. IIHS President David Harkey said, “Although it can certainly be uncomfortable, headlight glare contributes to far fewer crashes than insufficient visibility.” The practical implication is that reducing glare should not come at the cost of overlooking the larger need to see the road, people and objects ahead.

Is matrix ADB legal in the United States?

Yes, certified ADB headlamps on new vehicles are permitted under U.S. federal rules. On February 15, 2022, NHTSA issued a final rule amending Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108. NHTSA described the goal as directing less light toward occupied areas and more toward unoccupied areas to improve visibility of pedestrians, bicyclists, animals and objects.

Permission under the federal standard does not mean every ADB design is automatically compliant, nor that all vehicles sold in the U.S. offer it. IIHS has reported that ADB was available in Europe for more than a decade, while differences between U.S. and European requirements have restricted functionality and slowed U.S. rollout. Check the exact model year, trim and market; equipment and capabilities can differ even within a model line.

Can you retrofit ADB to a car?

There is no universal retrofit recommendation supported by the available evidence. ADB is an integrated, regulated headlamp function—not simply a brighter bulb. Its operation involves beam control and vehicle sensing, as well as correct installation, aiming and any required calibration. A generic LED bulb or aftermarket kit cannot be assumed to reproduce a certified system or maintain compliant light distribution.

  • Check the owner’s manual, official specifications or a dealer for the exact vehicle’s factory headlamp options and trim availability.
  • Before replacing a headlamp or changing the lighting system, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider which parts and procedures are approved for that vehicle.
  • Confirm local requirements before modifying exterior lighting; U.S. federal approval of certified ADB on new vehicles is not blanket approval for every aftermarket conversion.

What to check before choosing a vehicle with ADB

  • Confirm the feature on the exact trim. A model name alone does not establish that the vehicle has ADB; verify the market, model year and factory equipment.
  • Ask what the system actually controls. “Adaptive,” “matrix” and automatic high-beam labels can describe different functions. Confirm whether the high-beam pattern is selectively shaped around detected vehicles or merely switched on and off.
  • Understand service requirements. Ask the manufacturer or dealer about replacement parts, aiming and calibration after headlamp or related sensor work. Requirements are vehicle-specific.
  • Keep the evidence in perspective. ADB is designed to improve usable visibility while limiting light aimed at traffic. The available studies support controlled visibility and glare outcomes, not a universal claim that ADB reduces crashes by a stated percentage.
