A new union for non-permanent Maruti Suzuki workers was formed on January 5, 2025, after years of organizing alongside workers dismissed following the 2012 Manesar factory violence. In a report published January 9, 2025, journalist Nandita Haksar described the union’s launch and its demands for greater job security, better pay, equal pay for equal work, and representation. The report documents the launch; it does not establish the union’s subsequent registration or current status.
What happened at the union’s launch?
Haksar’s report for Scroll.in says the Maruti Suzuki Non-permanent Workers Sangh was formed at a gathering on January 5, 2025. Haksar said she attended as an observer. She reported that more than 1,000 people had arrived by 11:30 a.m. and that attendance later exceeded 3,000; those are figures in her account, not independently verified counts.
The initiative came from permanent Maruti Suzuki workers dismissed in 2012, according to Haksar. In the years after their dismissal, they continued campaigning for reinstatement or compensation and also raised concerns affecting non-permanent workers at the Gurgaon and Manesar plants.
Why did non-permanent workers want a union?
Haksar describes permanent and non-permanent employment categories in which workers could perform similar factory work while having different pay, job security, and representation. The report presents the union as a way for non-permanent workers to speak collectively about those differences and their interests.

- Pay: The union’s stated concerns included better pay and equal pay for equal work. These are worker demands reported by Haksar, not a legal finding about Maruti Suzuki’s pay practices.
- Representation: Workers wanted an organization able to present non-permanent workers’ concerns to the company and labour authorities.
- Access to new jobs: One demand described in the report was that people who had previously worked for Maruti be considered for hiring at the Kharkhoda factory.
The report’s questions—whether workers could get a decent job to support their families and whether people doing the same work would receive equal pay—convey the practical stakes as framed by the workers. Haksar’s article also gives employment and wage figures, but they should be understood as figures reported in that account, not as current, independently established company-wide data.
How does the 2012 dispute fit into the story?
The new organizing effort was linked to the aftermath of the 2012 events at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar factory. Haksar recounts violence at the plant, the death of a manager, arrests, and the dismissal of workers. Her account connects the dismissed permanent workers’ continuing campaign with their support for non-permanent workers’ organizing.

The history helps explain the solidarity described at the launch, but it does not by itself establish the circumstances or legal outcome of every worker’s case.
What was known about the next step?
Haksar reported that non-permanent workers were expected to speak to the labour commissioner on January 10, 2025. Her article does not report the result of that meeting. It also does not establish whether the union was registered or what activity followed the launch, so its legal and organizational status after that date cannot be determined from this report alone.
