The answer changes with the engine, fuel, transmission and drivetrain: Maruti Suzuki’s current brochure lists certified efficiency from 19.07 km/l for the petrol ALLGRIP automatic to 28.65 km/l for the strong-hybrid petrol e-CVT. Independent tests of AWD petrol automatics returned 16.1 km/l overall in one test and 11.78 km/l in another.
Those results are not contradictory promises. They are measurements from different cars, routes, temperatures and procedures. Use the official number for the exact Victoris variant as a certified comparison point, then treat road-test figures as context rather than a guaranteed daily result.

What independent road tests actually recorded
The available independent evidence concerns AWD petrol automatic Victoris cars. It does not establish a representative owner average, and it should not be transferred to the front-drive petrol manual, front-drive petrol automatic, CNG or strong-hybrid versions.
| Publisher and test | Vehicle tested | City | Highway | Combined or average | Important context |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CarWale real-world test, accessed 2026 | Victoris AWD automatic | 14.78 km/l | 20.24 km/l | 16.1 km/l overall | Independent road-test result |
| Autocar India real-world test, 2025 | Victoris AWD | 8.93 km/l | 14.62 km/l | 11.78 km/l average | Test result versus a 19.07 km/l ARAI figure |
The gap between 16.1 km/l overall and 11.78 km/l average is the central lesson: a test number is conditional. Neither publisher’s result can be presented as the mileage every Victoris owner should expect.
Why the two AWD tests differ so much
They are road tests, not a population average
CarWale and Autocar India measured individual test cars on their own routes and schedules. A single vehicle, loop and set of conditions cannot describe the full range of owner use. The figures are useful for showing what is possible under particular test conditions, but they do not provide a statistical owner-survey average.
Autocar’s controlled procedure
Autocar India says its procedure filled the fuel tank to the brim, set tyre pressures to the manufacturer’s recommendations, used fixed city and highway loops, maintained average speeds, operated the air-conditioning and other electrical equipment as needed, and rotated drivers periodically to reduce differences in driving patterns. That makes the result more repeatable than an informal trip-computer reading, while still leaving it dependent on the selected route and weather.

Heat and cabin cooling affected the city run
Autocar recorded ambient temperatures from 22°C at the start of its highway run to 37°C by the end of its city run. It specifically reported that the heat affected the city result: the automatic start/stop system did not keep the engine switched off for long while the car maintained the preset cabin temperature. In hot, congested conditions, air-conditioning demand and shorter engine-off periods can therefore appear in the measured city figure.
Different conditions can dominate the outcome
Traffic severity, average speed, route gradients, payload, driving style, tyre condition and maintenance state can all change consumption in actual use. The cited tests do not quantify a separate mileage penalty for any of those factors, so no responsible calculation can assign them a fixed number of kilometres per litre. They are variables to record when comparing your own results, not guaranteed deductions from the brochure figure.
Which Victoris number should you use?
For choosing between variants
Start with the brochure figure for the exact fuel and transmission you intend to buy. The 19.07 km/l ALLGRIP automatic figure belongs to the all-wheel-drive petrol configuration; it is not the official value for every automatic Victoris. The 21.06 km/l petrol 6AT, 21.18 km/l petrol 5MT, 27.02 km/kg petrol/CNG and 28.65 km/l strong-hybrid e-CVT figures each describe a different powertrain.
For planning a daily commute
Use the AWD road tests only as a range of independently observed outcomes for that type of car. CarWale’s 16.1 km/l overall and Autocar’s 11.78 km/l average should be kept separate because their routes, weather and operating conditions were not identical. If your use is mostly stop-start city driving in hot weather, the Autocar result demonstrates why a certified figure may not resemble a short urban commute.

For a CNG or strong-hybrid purchase
No independent road-test result in the available evidence establishes real-world mileage for the Victoris CNG or strong-hybrid versions. Their brochure figures remain the relevant published reference, but AWD petrol results cannot predict them because the fuel, engine operating strategy and drivetrain differ.
Factors that affect your Victoris fuel economy
Powertrain and drivetrain
Engine type, fuel and driven wheels are the first-order differences. The brochure assigns separate values to petrol, petrol/CNG and strong-hybrid systems, and separately identifies the ALLGRIP automatic. An AWD petrol result should never be used as a substitute for the specification of a two-wheel-drive or hybrid car.
Transmission and driving pattern
The 5MT and 6AT petrol versions have different certified values, even though both use petrol. In real traffic, frequent launches, repeated braking and changing speeds can produce a different result from steady highway running. Manual gear selection, automatic shift behaviour and the hybrid system’s operating strategy also mean that two versions driven over the same route may not consume fuel in the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRoute, speed and traffic
City and highway figures are not interchangeable. Congestion, queueing, intersections and low average speed create a different duty cycle from a steady open-road loop. Hills and route gradients can also alter the energy required, although the cited tests do not isolate or quantify those effects. Compare trips with broadly similar routes and speeds before drawing a conclusion.

Temperature and air-conditioning demand
Autocar’s reported 22°C-to-37°C temperature range and its observation about cabin-temperature management provide direct evidence that heat can influence city consumption. Cooling demand, the time the vehicle spends stationary and how often the engine can remain off are especially relevant in hot stop-start traffic.
Tyre pressure and tyre condition
Autocar set its test cars to the manufacturer-recommended tyre pressures. That is a useful baseline for owners: check pressures against the Victoris placard or owner’s manual rather than relying on appearance. The available tests do not state a numerical mileage gain from correcting pressure, so treat correct inflation as a consistency and safety measure, not a promised fuel-saving percentage.
Payload, accessories and vehicle condition
Passengers, luggage, roof-mounted equipment, tyre wear, alignment and maintenance condition can change the work the car must do. The cited Victoris tests do not measure each item separately. If mileage changes, log these conditions instead of attributing the entire difference to one cause without evidence.
Driver behaviour
Acceleration intensity, braking frequency, speed choice and anticipation of traffic affect the operating cycle. Autocar rotated drivers to reduce driver-pattern variation, but that control does not make the result universal. A personal reading reflects the way that car is driven on that route.

How to measure your own Victoris mileage
A consistent fill-to-fill log is more useful than treating one dashboard estimate as a permanent rating. Use the same fuel unit throughout: kilometres per litre for petrol, or kilometres per kilogram for CNG.
- Choose a baseline. Record the exact variant, fuel, transmission, drivetrain, odometer reading, tyre pressures and whether the trip is mainly city, highway or mixed.
- Fill the tank using a repeatable method. A brim-to-brim measurement is the most practical approach, provided you use the same method at the next refill. Record the quantity dispensed and the date.
- Reset the trip meter. Reset it after filling, or record the odometer reading if you prefer not to use the trip computer.
- Drive a normal-use interval. Include the traffic, air-conditioning use, passengers and routes that represent your actual ownership. Avoid changing several variables at once if you are trying to diagnose a drop.
- Refill in the same way. Record the distance travelled and the fuel or CNG quantity required to return to the same fill level.
- Calculate the result. Use
km/l = kilometres driven ÷ litres addedfor petrol, orkm/kg = kilometres driven ÷ kilograms of CNG addedfor CNG. - Repeat before judging. Keep separate entries for city-heavy, highway-heavy and mixed use. One unusually hot, congested or lightly loaded trip is not enough to define the car.
Record ambient conditions and cabin-cooling use alongside each entry. That gives you an explanation for variation instead of a misleading single number.
How to compare Victoris variants fairly
Use a like-for-like comparison rather than ranking every number in one list. The comparison axes should be:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Fuel: petrol, CNG or petrol-electric hybrid.
- Transmission: five-speed manual, six-speed automatic or e-CVT.
- Drive layout: two-wheel drive or ALLGRIP all-wheel drive.
- Route: city, highway or a defined mixed loop.
- Conditions: temperature, air-conditioning use, payload, tyre pressure and traffic.
- Measurement type: brochure certification, independent test result or your own repeated fill-to-fill record.
For example, comparing the 28.65 km/l strong-hybrid brochure figure with the 11.78 km/l AWD petrol road-test average mixes different fuels, systems and evidence types. It may be a useful product-level contrast, but it is not a controlled test comparison.
What to check when your mileage seems low
- Confirm the specification. Make sure you are comparing your exact fuel, transmission and drivetrain with the corresponding brochure figure.
- Check tyre pressures. Set them to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation and record whether the tyres were cold when checked.
- Review the route and weather. Note congestion, short trips, gradients, high temperatures and sustained air-conditioning use.
- Check the measurement method. Recalculate from distance and fuel added; do not rely solely on a trip-computer estimate.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. A second or third fill-to-fill result is more informative than one abnormal trip.
- Arrange a mechanical inspection if the change persists. A warning light, drivability problem or continuing unexplained decline warrants inspection by an authorised service centre rather than a guessed mileage adjustment.
A simple tyre-pressure routine
Keep a digital tyre-pressure gauge in the car if it helps you check pressures consistently. Measure before driving or when the tyres are cold, compare the reading with the Victoris manufacturer recommendation, and record any correction before a mileage test. Autocar’s own procedure used manufacturer-recommended pressures, but neither its report nor the other cited test assigns a specific mileage gain to owning or using a gauge.
What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The evidence supports a clear hierarchy. Maruti Suzuki’s brochure gives the certified reference for each listed powertrain. CarWale and Autocar India provide independent outcomes for AWD petrol automatic cars, with materially different results. Autocar also documents a controlled procedure and identifies heat and cabin cooling as influences on its city result.
It does not support a universal “real-world Victoris mileage” number, a guaranteed owner outcome, a numerical penalty for every possible driving factor, or a prediction for the CNG and strong-hybrid models from AWD petrol data. The most defensible expectation is therefore specific: identify your Victoris configuration, start with its published figure, and compare your own repeated results with road tests that match the same fuel, transmission, drivetrain and operating conditions.
