Choose the Ertiga if its seven-seat layout, smaller footprint and available petrol or CNG version fit your routine; choose the Kia Carens if you want a larger vehicle and its particular trim offers the powertrain and cabin features your family needs. Neither model is a universal winner. The right choice depends on who will use the third row, how much luggage you carry, which fuel and transmission suit your routes, and the current price of the exact trim in your city.
At a glance: what separates the Ertiga and Carens?
The India-market Carens is larger on the exterior dimensions cited by the manufacturers. That is useful context for checking parking and manoeuvring, but it does not by itself prove a roomier third row or a bigger boot with every seat occupied. Seating configuration, powertrain and equipment also vary by trim.
| Decision point | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | Kia Carens | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exterior dimensions | 4,395 mm long and 1,735 mm wide; Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s 2025 brochure also lists a height of 1,690 mm and a 2,740 mm wheelbase. | About 4,540 mm long and 1,800 mm wide; Kia’s specifications page lists height at approximately 1,708 mm. | Try parking both where you live and work, and check visibility and turning space. |
| Seating | Seven seats, according to the 2025 brochure. | Six- or seven-person seating, depending on configuration, according to Kia. | Confirm the exact seat layout of the trim for sale. |
| Powertrain choices | The brochure lists a 1,462 cc K15C petrol engine, as well as CNG versions. Petrol is shown with manual and automatic transmissions; CNG with a manual. | Kia’s current pages show petrol, diesel and CNG configurations, varying by trim. | Check local availability, fuel access, transmission, and how your annual mileage and routes affect the choice. |
| Safety equipment | The brochure lists safety equipment including ISOFIX child-seat anchors. | Kia says six airbags are standard across Carens variants and lists additional stability and braking equipment. | Compare the equipment on the exact trims; equipment lists are not independent crash-test results. |
| Ownership costs | The brochure gives manufacturer fuel-efficiency claims and warranty terms. | Kia’s brochure describes warranty and roadside-assistance terms. | Use written local quotes and compare service schedules, warranty terms and exclusions. |

Which one is better for your passengers and luggage?
Start with the third row, not the seat count
A seven-seat label does not tell you whether the third row will work for the people in your family or for the length of your journeys. Take the passengers who are likely to sit there on a test drive. Check how they get in and out, their seating position, and whether the climate control reaches them comfortably. The Carens is longer and wider by the cited figures, but exterior measurements cannot settle those questions.

Check the boot with all the seats in use
If you often travel with six or seven people, inspect the boot with the third row occupied and bring the bags you would normally carry. Do not infer luggage capacity from exterior size or from a boot measurement taken with seats folded. The cited sources do not provide a consistent loaded-cabin comparison.
Confirm the actual seating layout
The Ertiga brochure specifies seven seats. Kia lists six- or seven-person seating for the Carens, depending on configuration. Confirm the layout on the precise Carens trim you are considering rather than assuming every version has the same arrangement.
How should you compare engines, fuel and mileage?
Choose a powertrain around the fuel you can reliably obtain, your routes and the transmission you prefer—not a headline output from a different variant. The Ertiga brochure lists petrol and CNG versions; Kia’s Carens pages show petrol, diesel and CNG configurations, with availability depending on trim. Ask the dealer which combinations are actually available locally.

- Precision rack and pinion meshing brings quick steering response without stagnation or delay.
- Light steering for easy low-speed parking, solid steering stability at high speed.
- Upgraded steering feel - firm, tough, and stable; improved cornering response.
- Self-locking thick lock nut with anti-loose thread, prevent nut loosening caused by vibration, avoid vehicle drifting and steering wheel offset.
- OE dimension molding, consistent mounting holes for plug-and-play installation.
Figures from different fuel and gearbox combinations are not a controlled performance comparison. In one configuration displayed by Autocar India’s changing comparison page, the Ertiga 1.5 petrol ZXi+ automatic is listed at 103 hp and 136.8 Nm, while the Carens Premium (O) diesel manual is listed at 116 hp and 250 Nm. Those outputs describe those particular versions; they do not establish that one model is generally quicker or stronger.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMaruti Suzuki’s 2025 Ertiga brochure lists claimed efficiency of 20.51 km/l for petrol manual, 20.30 km/l for petrol automatic and 26.11 km/kg for CNG. These are manufacturer figures, not an estimate of what a household will achieve. The Autocar comparison is also variant-specific. Neither source establishes comparable real-world mileage for the two vehicles under the same traffic, load, air-conditioning use and driving style.

What do the safety features tell you—and what do they not?
Kia says six airbags are standard on Carens variants, and its specifications page lists stability and braking equipment. Maruti’s Ertiga brochure lists safety equipment including ISOFIX anchors. Because equipment can differ by trim, verify the exact specification in writing before comparing cars or fitting a child seat.
These lists do not establish an overall safety winner. The cited material does not provide a comparable, independently verified crash-test score for the relevant India-market specifications. If a current independent rating is important to your decision, check that it applies to the same model, market and relevant variant or specification rather than treating an equipment count as a crash result.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare the price and cost of ownership fairly
Do not compare a starting price for one model with a different trim of the other, or treat an example price on a comparison page as an on-road quote. Autocar India’s snapshot pairs an Ertiga 1.5 petrol ZXi+ automatic with a Carens Premium (O) diesel manual. Fuel, gearbox, output and equipment all differ, so that pairing is not a like-for-like value or consumption test. Its prices are snapshots, and actual on-road totals vary by city, insurance, registration, variant and offer.
- Choose the seating layout, fuel type and transmission you actually want, then identify the closest available trim of each vehicle.
- Request written quotes from dealers in the same city and on the same date. Ask each dealer to itemise the vehicle price, registration, insurance and any other charges or offers.
- Compare the equipment lists for those exact trims, including the features your family values, rather than comparing the model names alone.
- Review the warranty terms, exclusions, roadside assistance and service schedule for the specific versions. Kia’s brochure describes warranty and roadside-assistance terms; Maruti’s Ertiga brochure lists warranty terms. Read the current documents for the conditions that apply.
- Estimate fuel spending using your own annual distance, routes and locally available fuel prices. Do not assume brochure efficiency claims will be your real-world result.
The available evidence here does not establish a directly comparable current dataset for reliability, service expense or local service support. Ask owners and dealers in your area about the service experience, but weigh those accounts as local evidence rather than a guaranteed difference between the brands.

Which should you choose?
- Lean toward the Ertiga if its seven-seat arrangement, smaller exterior footprint and available petrol or CNG configuration suit your family and your local parking and fuel needs.
- Lean toward the Carens if its larger exterior dimensions, available six- or seven-seat configuration, or a specific trim’s powertrain and cabin equipment better match your needs.
- Keep both on your shortlist if third-row use, luggage space or price is decisive until you have tried the vehicles with your passengers, bags and exact local quotes.
This comparison covers the India-market Kia Carens nameplate, not the separately listed Kia Carens Clavis. Kia’s model pages, trim names and availability can change; check the current specification and showroom information before ordering.
