Choose the Maruti Baleno if you want a premium hatchback, petrol or CNG running, a lower starting price in the quoted Bengaluru announcement, and a long list of new convenience and driver-assistance features. Choose the Tata Nexon if you specifically want an SUV body, the brochure’s stated 208 mm ground clearance, a diesel option, or Tata’s petrol, diesel and CNG variant mix. Neither is universally “better”: they solve different use cases, and the right answer depends on your roads, fuel access, transmission preference, passengers and exact trim.
The comparison below uses the Baleno announcement available in September 2026 and Tata’s January 2025 Nexon brochure and current model information. Confirm equipment, prices and safety ratings for the model year and city in which you will buy.

Baleno or Nexon: the short answer
The Baleno is a premium hatchback. The Nexon is a subcompact SUV. That distinction affects parking, seating position, exterior dimensions, approach to rough roads and the way each car fits into daily life. It does not, by itself, prove that one rides better, handles better or is safer.

| If your priority is… | More natural starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A hatchback footprint and easy urban use | Baleno | Its body style is a premium hatchback; compare the actual parking space and visibility on a test drive. |
| An SUV stance and stated clearance | Nexon | Tata’s 2025 brochure states 208 mm ground clearance and SUV dimensions. |
| Petrol or factory CNG | Either, depending on trim | Baleno is listed with petrol MT/AGS and CNG MT; Nexon is listed with petrol, diesel and petrol+CNG variants. |
| A diesel powertrain | Nexon | The listed Nexon range includes a 1.5-litre diesel; the current Baleno information lists petrol and CNG. |
| The newest Baleno technology package | Baleno, on the applicable trim | The September 2026 announcement lists Level 2 ADAS, ventilated front seats, TPMS, six airbags as standard, a 9-inch system and other equipment. Verify trim fitment. |
| A definitive safety winner | Neither can be declared from this comparison | Equipment lists are not crash-test scores, and a verified, directly comparable Bharat NCAP result must be checked for the exact year and variant. |
Use this table to narrow the choice, not to skip a variant-by-variant quote and test drive. A well-equipped lower or mid trim can be a better purchase than a headline feature on a version outside your budget.

How the two cars differ in size and purpose
Baleno: a premium hatchback brief
Maruti Suzuki presents the Baleno as a premium hatchback. That normally appeals to buyers who want a passenger car that is easier to place in narrow streets and parking spaces than an SUV, while still offering a richer equipment list than an entry-level hatchback. The manufacturer’s 2026 announcement focuses on the updated model’s technology, comfort and safety equipment rather than presenting it as an SUV substitute.
Nexon: an SUV brief
Tata’s January 2025 brochure lists the Nexon at 3,995 mm long, 1,804 mm wide and 1,620 mm high, with a 2,498 mm wheelbase and 208 mm stated ground clearance. The greater height and SUV shape may suit a driver who prefers a higher seating position or regularly encounters uneven entrances, broken edges and speed breakers. Clearance is a specification, not a guarantee of a softer ride, better traction or immunity from underbody contact; those depend on suspension, tyres, load and driving technique.
The Nexon is also wider and taller on paper, so check whether your garage, apartment ramp and usual parking bays leave enough door-opening room. Sit in the rear seat with the people who will actually travel there rather than judging space from exterior dimensions alone.
Powertrains and transmissions
Baleno choices
The updated Baleno announcement lists the Z12E petrol engine with a five-speed manual transmission (MT) or an automated manual transmission (AGS). It also lists S-CNG with a five-speed manual. The Z12E is rated at 61 kW at 5,700 rpm and 112.4 Nm at 4,500 rpm.
AGS is an automated manual, not a conventional torque-converter automatic or a continuously variable transmission. Its shift timing and low-speed behavior should be assessed in traffic, on ramps and while parking. If you regularly drive in congested conditions, spend time with the exact AGS variant rather than assuming all automatic-style transmissions feel alike.

Nexon choices
Official Tata material lists a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel and petrol+CNG variants. Transmission availability is variant-dependent, so the phrase “Nexon automatic” is incomplete until you identify the fuel, gearbox and trim. The January 2025 brochure gives 88.2 kW for the petrol and 84.5 kW for the diesel, with 170 Nm petrol torque and 260 Nm diesel torque. CNG output is listed separately in Tata’s material; use the current variant sheet for the exact figure and transmission.
These power and torque numbers come from different engines and cannot predict a head-to-head acceleration result. No independent comparative road-test result is established here. Select the engine using annual kilometres, traffic pattern, fuel availability, payload and local running restrictions—not by comparing a petrol figure directly with a diesel figure.
Which fuel should you choose?
- Petrol: the simplest common starting point for mixed city and highway use when you do not have dependable CNG access or diesel-specific needs.
- CNG: potentially attractive for high-kilometre users with convenient, reliable filling stations. Baleno’s listed CNG pairing is a five-speed manual; Nexon CNG equipment and transmission must be confirmed for the chosen trim.
- Diesel: available in the listed Nexon range and worth considering only after checking your annual distance, city rules, service network and likely ownership period.
Fuel economy, resale and maintenance outcomes vary with traffic, driving style, load, tyre pressure and fuel quality. Do not treat a certified test-cycle number as a promise of your personal consumption.
Efficiency: what the published figures actually mean
Maruti states 23.80 km/l for the Baleno MT, 24.77 km/l for Baleno AGS and 33.61 km/kg for Baleno CNG MT. The company says these figures are certified under Rule 115 of India’s Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. They are laboratory or certification values for the specified configurations, not measured fuel use in every city, season or traffic condition.
A comparable current official Nexon efficiency figure was not reliably available in the material used for this article. It would therefore be misleading to place an invented or unverified Nexon number beside Maruti’s certified figures. Ask the dealer for the exact fuel and transmission variant’s current certified value, then budget using a conservative real-world estimate based on your own route.

Safety: equipment, ratings and how to verify them
Published equipment
The updated Baleno announcement lists six airbags, electronic stability programme (ESP), ABS with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), hill-hold assist, seat-belt reminders and tyre-pressure monitoring (TPMS). It also lists Level 2 ADAS on the updated model. ADAS functions can include camera- or sensor-based assistance, but the exact functions, operating conditions and trim fitment should be read in the current equipment sheet. Driver assistance is not autonomous driving and does not replace attention.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTata’s current Nexon information lists six airbags and ESP on named trims, along with other safety equipment that varies by version. Confirm whether the specific car you are pricing has the airbags, stability control, camera, sensors and other items you consider essential; do not assume that a feature shown for a top trim is standard across the range.
Crash-test evidence
A list of airbags or electronic systems cannot establish a crash-test winner. Official Bharat NCAP result pages for the Nexon and Baleno were identified, but detailed score tables were not available for verification here. Before making safety the deciding factor, open the current official result for the exact model year and variant, check the test protocol and read the adult- and child-occupant scores and test notes. A rating from a different model year or specification may not apply to the car offered by your dealer.
Cabin, comfort and technology
Baleno equipment highlighted for 2026
Maruti’s September 2026 announcement lists ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging with active cooling, a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360 View Camera, a head-up display and Suzuki Connect. It also describes the new Level 2 ADAS package. These are equipment claims for the updated Baleno announcement; confirm availability by trim, because a feature can be limited to one grade or bundled with a particular powertrain.
Nexon equipment by named variant
Tata’s material lists equipment such as a 26.03 cm Harman touchscreen on certain trims, a rear camera, rear air-conditioning vents and a 360-degree system on named variants. The wording “on certain trims” matters: compare the equipment sheet for the Nexon grade you can actually buy with the Baleno grade in the same price range.

Price and the cost of a fair comparison
Maruti announced a starting Bengaluru ex-showroom price of ₹6,09,900 for the updated Baleno in September 2026. The announcement describes this as an introductory price. It is not a national on-road price and should not be treated as a permanent figure. Confirm the currently available trim, offer period and dealer quote.
Tata’s current Nexon pricing page is dynamic, and a reliable variant-price table was not exposed in the material available for this comparison. Do not declare a national price winner. Request dated, same-city quotes for the two exact variants, then add the costs that are often omitted from ex-showroom comparisons.
| Quote item | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|
| Ex-showroom price | Varies by fuel, gearbox, trim, city and offer period. |
| Registration and road tax | Set by the state and vehicle details, so an ex-showroom gap may not equal an on-road gap. |
| Insurance | Premium depends on insurer, cover, add-ons, vehicle value and claim choices. |
| Accessories | Dealer packages are optional; buy only what fits the model year and variant. |
| Finance | Interest rate, term, processing fees and down payment determine total repayment, not just monthly EMI. |
| Fuel and service | Annual distance, fuel type, local prices and maintenance schedules determine running cost. |
Compare total on-road cash price and total financed repayment separately. A lower EMI can simply mean a longer term and more interest.
Which car suits common buyer profiles?
Choose the Baleno when these conditions match
- You have already decided that a hatchback suits your parking, road width and seating needs.
- You want to choose between petrol MT, petrol AGS and CNG MT as listed for the current model.
- The updated Baleno’s ventilated seats, 9-inch system, connected features, 360 View Camera or Level 2 ADAS matter to you and are included in the quoted trim.
- The Bengaluru introductory ex-showroom figure—or the equivalent current local quote—fits your budget after registration, insurance and financing.
Choose the Nexon when these conditions match
- You specifically want an SUV shape, higher seating position or the brochure’s stated 208 mm ground clearance.
- You need to consider a diesel powertrain, or you want to compare Tata’s petrol, diesel and CNG range.
- The Nexon trim you can afford includes the safety, camera, screen and comfort features you require.
- Your garage and parking spaces can accommodate a vehicle listed at 1,804 mm wide and 1,620 mm high.
Pause the decision when your priorities conflict
If you want an automatic CNG car, a diesel hatchback, or a particular safety rating, neither model should be selected from the badge alone. Build a shortlist of exact fuel-and-gearbox variants and remove any that do not meet the requirement. A model that cannot be configured the way you need is not a bargain.

- Write down your use case: annual kilometres, percentage of city and highway driving, typical passengers, fuel availability, parking dimensions and the roads you use most.
- Match variants: choose a Baleno and Nexon with comparable safety and convenience equipment. Record engine, transmission, trim, model year and quoted city.
- Inspect the driving position: check pedal alignment, outward visibility, mirror coverage, steering adjustment and ease of entry for every regular driver.
- Drive the same route: include a tight parking area, stop-start traffic, an open stretch, a speed breaker and the rough surface you encounter at home. Keep tyre pressures and passenger loads in mind.
- Evaluate the transmission: for Baleno AGS or any automatic-style Nexon variant, observe creep, hill starts, low-speed shifts, reverse manoeuvres and response when you request acceleration.
- Check passengers and cargo: place adults in the rear seat, install any child seat you use, and load representative luggage.
- Verify the feature sheet: ask the salesperson to demonstrate airbags, ESP, TPMS, ADAS functions, camera views, phone integration and connected services on the exact VIN or trim being quoted.
- Verify safety evidence: consult the current Bharat NCAP page for the exact model and variant; do not substitute a different year or unverified summary.
- Get written numbers: request ex-showroom, registration, insurance, accessories, discounts, finance rate, processing fees and delivery charges on a dated quotation.
- Read the delivery documents: confirm fuel type, gearbox, manufacturing date, variant, equipment and warranty terms before signing.
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing categories instead of needs: a hatchback and SUV have different packaging; decide which body style fits your life first.
- Using clearance as a safety or comfort proxy: 208 mm is a stated dimension, not proof of suspension quality or crash performance.
- Mixing trims: comparing a fully equipped Baleno with a base Nexon, or vice versa, makes the price and feature conclusions meaningless.
- Treating claimed efficiency as personal mileage: certification values use defined test conditions; traffic and driving can produce different results.
- Assuming every transmission is available with every fuel: Baleno’s listed CNG pairing is manual, while Nexon pairings are variant-dependent.
- Calling a safety winner without a verified score: obtain the official, current Bharat NCAP result and protocol before making that claim.
- Using an old brochure as a current guarantee: Tata’s cited brochure is dated January 2025; confirm specifications with current Tata material or an authorised dealer.
- Comparing one city’s introductory price with another city’s on-road quote: use same-date, same-city, same-variant numbers.
Final decision framework
Start with the non-negotiable requirement. If it is diesel availability or an SUV body with the stated clearance, the Nexon moves ahead. If it is a premium hatchback with petrol or CNG options and the updated Baleno’s listed technology, the Baleno is the logical first test drive.

Next, remove trims that do not provide your required airbags, stability control, transmission, camera or fuel type. Then compare written on-road quotes and drive both cars on the same route with your regular passengers. Finish by checking the current safety result and delivery specification. This process produces a defensible choice without pretending that a single overall winner exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Baleno cheaper than the Nexon?
A September 2026 announcement gives the updated Baleno an introductory Bengaluru ex-showroom starting price of ₹6,09,900. A reliable current Nexon price table was not available in the cited material, so compare same-city, same-variant on-road quotations rather than naming a national price winner.
Which has better mileage, Baleno or Nexon?
Maruti publishes 23.80 km/l for Baleno MT, 24.77 km/l for AGS and 33.61 km/kg for CNG MT under Rule 115 certification. A comparable current official Nexon figure is not established here, and neither certification value guarantees real-world consumption.

Does the Nexon have more ground clearance?
Tata’s January 2025 brochure states 208 mm ground clearance for the Nexon. The figure alone does not establish better ride comfort, traction or safety, and the Baleno and Nexon remain different vehicle types.
Which is safer, Baleno or Nexon?
Do not decide from equipment lists alone. Both manufacturers list six airbags on relevant current materials, but trim fitment varies. Check the current official Bharat NCAP result for the exact model year and variant before making a safety comparison.
Can I buy a CNG automatic version of either car?
The current Baleno information lists S-CNG with a five-speed manual. Nexon fuel-and-transmission pairings are variant-dependent. Ask the dealer for the exact current CNG automatic availability in your city rather than assuming it exists.
