Choose the Alto K10 S-CNG if you can refuel conveniently, drive enough kilometres to recover its higher purchase price, and are comfortable with a manual gearbox. Choose the petrol Alto K10 if you want the lowest listed entry price, an AGS automatic, or you cannot depend on CNG stations along your normal routes. Neither fuel is universally cheaper: the answer depends on your city’s pump prices, the exact variant quote, annual distance and your car’s real economy.
The short answer
The Alto K10 comparison is not simply “higher mileage versus lower mileage.” The current listed CNG variants cost more, use a manual transmission, and have no published boot-capacity figure in Maruti’s product listing. Petrol versions have a listed AGS automatic option and a lower starting price. CNG can reduce fuel cost per kilometre, but only if the local price gap and your actual usage repay the upfront premium.

For a daily commuter, make the decision in this order: confirm that CNG is available on your real route, compare written on-road prices for equivalent trims, calculate fuel cost per kilometre using local prices, then decide whether the manual-only CNG range suits your traffic and driving preferences.

| Specification | Alto K10 petrol | Alto K10 CNG |
|---|---|---|
| Engine displacement | 998 cc | 998 cc |
| Listed maximum power | 50.4 kW at 5,600 rpm | 41.7 kW at 5,300 rpm in CNG mode |
| Listed maximum torque | 91.1 Nm at 3,400 rpm | 82.1 Nm at 3,400 rpm in CNG mode |
| Transmission availability | Manual and AGS listed | Manual only in the listed CNG variants |
| Manufacturer-listed boot space | 214 litres | Not stated in the product listing |
The CNG figures show lower certified output than the petrol figures. They describe the manufacturer’s specifications, not a quantified difference in acceleration, hill-climbing or overtaking. A buyer who cares about those traits should drive the exact variant on familiar roads rather than infer a road-test result from the power numbers alone.
Price difference: compare equivalent trims, not just fuel types
Maruti’s GST-revised price page lists the following ex-showroom prices:
| Matched trim | Petrol price | CNG price | Listed CNG premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| LXi (O) manual | ₹3,99,900 | ₹4,81,900 | ₹82,000 |
| VXi (O) manual | ₹4,49,900 | ₹5,31,900 | ₹82,000 |
These are ex-showroom figures. Maruti states that the invoice price and schemes apply, while registration, insurance, taxes and other on-road charges vary by city. The current product page also contains variant-card numbers that differ from some figures in its FAQ. Ask a dealer for a dated, itemised written quote for the same city and equipment level before calculating payback.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Why the on-road premium matters
Use the actual difference between the two on-road quotes, not automatically ₹82,000. Insurance treatment, registration charges, accessories, discounts and finance can change the amount you must recover. Keep finance interest, maintenance, resale value, waiting time and refuelling detours separate from the basic fuel-only calculation so that each assumption remains visible.
Check what each quote includes
Ask both quotes to show the same insurance duration and coverage, registration assumptions, handling or logistics charges, accessories, extended warranty and any dealer-installed equipment. A discount applied to only one fuel type can make a headline comparison misleading. If you are considering a petrol AGS rather than a manual, request that exact AGS price instead of using the LXi (O) manual figure as a proxy. Keep the two dated documents because schemes and invoice prices can change before delivery.
Calculate whether CNG will repay its premium
There is no universal kilometre threshold because petrol and CNG prices differ by city and change over time, while real economy varies with traffic, load, tyre pressure, air-conditioning use and driving style. Use this calculation with your own current pump prices and a conservative economy estimate.

- 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
- Record local prices: write down the petrol price per litre and CNG price per kilogram at stations you can realistically use.
- Estimate each car’s economy: use a matched petrol manual or AGS estimate for the version you would buy and a realistic CNG estimate. Do not treat a certified figure as guaranteed commute mileage.
- Calculate fuel cost per kilometre: petrol cost/km = petrol price per litre ÷ petrol km/l; CNG cost/km = CNG price per kilogram ÷ CNG km/kg.
- Find the saving: petrol cost/km minus CNG cost/km equals the estimated fuel saving per kilometre.
- Use the real premium: divide the on-road CNG premium by the saving per kilometre. The result is the approximate fuel-only break-even distance.
- Relate it to your commute: divide that distance by your expected annual kilometres to estimate how long fuel savings would take to cover the premium.
For an illustration only, assume petrol at ₹100 per litre, CNG at ₹75 per kilogram, petrol economy of 20 km/l, CNG economy of 28 km/kg and an on-road premium of ₹90,000. Petrol would cost ₹5.00 per kilometre and CNG ₹2.68; the ₹2.32 saving would imply about 38,793 kilometres to recover the premium. Those are hypothetical inputs, not a city forecast. Replace every number with your own quote, pump prices and measured or carefully estimated economy.
Test the result against less favourable assumptions
Run the worksheet again with fewer annual kilometres, a smaller petrol–CNG price gap and lower CNG economy. If the decision changes under those reasonable variations, the payback is sensitive and should not be treated as certain. A commuter who may sell the car before reaching the calculated distance should also treat the fuel-only result cautiously; resale value, financing cost and maintenance are separate ownership variables that are not established by the listed specifications.
Build a small commute worksheet
| Input | Your value | Where to obtain it |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol price per litre | Fill in | Local station on your normal route |
| CNG price per kilogram | Fill in | Local station you can actually access |
| Expected petrol economy | Fill in | Matched variant estimate; validate after ownership |
| Expected CNG economy | Fill in | Conservative estimate for your traffic and load |
| Petrol on-road price | Fill in | Itemised dealer quote |
| CNG on-road price | Fill in | Itemised dealer quote |
| Annual kilometres | Fill in | Round-trip distance × working days, plus other trips |
Efficiency figures: useful benchmarks, not promises
The current Alto K10 brochure lists 24.90 km/l for the petrol AGS and 33.40 km/kg for CNG. Maruti says these figures are certified by a test agency under Rule 115(G) of CMVR 1989. The brochure’s publication date is not stated in the available material.
These numbers use different units and different transmissions: the petrol number is specifically for AGS, while the listed CNG versions are manual. They are therefore not a direct real-world cost comparison and should not be presented as guaranteed daily-commute mileage. A petrol manual buyer should obtain the applicable figure for that variant rather than silently applying the AGS number.
There is also a discrepancy among Maruti’s official materials. The S-CNG technology page and an older company press release cite 33.85 km/kg, while the current model brochure and product listing show 33.40 km/kg. Use 33.40 km/kg as the current headline figure, and do not average it with the older figure.
How to measure your own economy
- Refuel consistently and record the quantity and odometer reading.
- Repeat over several refuelling cycles that include your normal traffic, air-conditioning use and passenger load.
- Keep petrol and CNG records separate; litres and kilograms cannot be compared as if they were the same unit.
- Use the resulting average in the cost-per-kilometre formula, with a margin for unusually slow traffic or long queues.
Transmission can outweigh fuel savings
The listed petrol range includes AGS, while the listed CNG variants are manual. That distinction is decisive for commuters who spend hours in stop-and-go traffic or cannot comfortably use a clutch. Selecting a petrol AGS may cost more than a petrol manual, so compare the exact petrol AGS quote with the CNG manual quote you would actually purchase rather than comparing only the cheapest petrol and cheapest CNG prices.

If you prefer a manual, the transmission difference disappears and the decision becomes mainly about fuel economics, station access, cargo practicality and the purchase premium. If you require an automatic, the current listed CNG versions do not meet that requirement.
Make the test drive representative
Drive the exact fuel and transmission combination you are considering. Include a slow section, a typical junction, a parking manoeuvre and an open stretch where you can judge whether the controls suit you. Pay attention to clutch effort and gear changes in the manual, and to the AGS response in crawling traffic. These observations are personal buying criteria, not a substitute for a measured performance test.
CNG access: map the whole routine
Fuel savings are theoretical if refuelling requires a long detour or an unreliable queue. Before booking, map stations near home, work and regular destinations. Check whether their opening hours fit your schedule and whether you can refuel without missing work or school pickups.

- Measure the extra distance and time caused by a refuelling detour.
- Ask regular commuters about queue patterns, but treat those observations as local and time-specific.
- Decide how much waiting you would tolerate; include that time as a practical cost even though it is not part of the fuel-only formula.
- Recheck access if you move house, change jobs or regularly travel outside the city.
The available official material does not establish a city-wide CNG network or queue time for your location, so a local route check is essential. A station that is convenient on weekdays may not solve holiday or intercity travel needs, so list the destinations you actually visit rather than judging access from a single nearby pump.
Boot and cargo practicality
Maruti’s product listing states 214 litres for the petrol Alto K10 but marks CNG boot space as “NA.” It does not provide a precise CNG cargo-volume figure that can be used to quantify the loss. Do not rely on an internet estimate when your luggage is the deciding factor.
What to check at the dealership
- Take the bags, child-seat equipment or work gear you normally carry.
- Place them in the CNG car with the rear seats in your usual position.
- Check whether the opening, floor height and side space allow safe loading without blocking visibility.
- Repeat the check in the petrol car if you are comparing both on the same visit.
Take a photograph or note the arrangement if several family members will use the car. A theoretical volume number would not show whether your particular suitcase fits through the opening, so the physical check is more useful than an unverified capacity claim.

Which buyer should choose petrol?
- You need an AGS automatic; the listed CNG variants are manual.
- Your annual distance is modest or irregular, so the premium may take too long to recover.
- CNG stations are not on your normal routes, or queues would undermine the convenience of your commute.
- You want the lower listed starting price and prefer to keep more cash available for registration, insurance or other expenses.
- You carry bulky items and cannot accept a cargo layout that has not been specified in the official listing.
Which buyer should choose CNG?
- You drive enough kilometres for the local fuel-cost saving to recover the actual on-road premium within your ownership period.
- A dependable CNG station is close to home, work or another unavoidable stop.
- You are comfortable buying a manual and do not need the listed AGS option.
- Your luggage fits after inspecting the actual vehicle rather than relying on an unverified boot-capacity number.
- You are prepared to monitor real economy and pump prices instead of assuming the certified figure will match every commute.
A practical buying process
- Choose the transmission first. Eliminate the CNG versions if you require an automatic.
- Match equipment. Compare LXi (O) petrol with LXi (O) CNG, or VXi (O) petrol with VXi (O) CNG, and note any equipment differences in writing.
- Get two itemised on-road quotes. Request the same city, insurance basis, registration assumptions and accessories.
- Inspect cargo space. Bring the items you carry every day and test both cars.
- Map CNG access. Include normal routes, detours and likely waiting time.
- Run the fuel worksheet. Use current local prices, cautious economy assumptions and the actual premium.
- Stress-test the result. Recalculate with lower CNG economy, a smaller petrol–CNG price gap and fewer annual kilometres.
- Test-drive the exact variant. Evaluate clutch effort, visibility, ride comfort and traffic usability on roads similar to your commute.
- Keep the written quote. Prices and schemes can change; use the dated document when making the final comparison.
Questions to put in writing
Ask the dealer to identify the exact model year, trim, transmission, fuel system, delivery timeline and every included charge. Confirm whether a quoted discount depends on finance or insurance purchased through the dealer. Request clarification whenever the product page and FAQ show different numbers, and retain the answer with your quotation. This prevents a later comparison between unlike cars or between an advertised price and an invoice amount.
What the available evidence does not establish
Official specifications establish the listed outputs, prices and certified test-cycle figures, but they do not provide a real-world commute comparison for your city. They also do not establish a current local pump-price spread, station availability, independently measured safety difference between fuel variants, or a quantified CNG boot penalty.
Maruti’s official media release says: “Our S-CNG range is specially designed, developed, and manufactured at our facilities to suit Indian driving conditions.” This is Maruti’s positioning statement, not an independent validation or a measured comparison with the petrol car.
Maintenance schedules, resale outcomes and financing costs can affect total ownership, but no variant-specific figures are established here. Treat them as separate questions for the dealer, lender and your own ownership horizon instead of folding unsupported assumptions into the fuel-only payback.
Final decision rule
Buy the Alto K10 CNG when three conditions are all true: CNG is convenient on your real routes, the manual transmission works for you, and your fuel-cost worksheet shows that the saving repays the on-road premium at a distance you expect to drive. Buy the petrol version when any of those conditions fails—especially if you want AGS, need maximum refuelling flexibility, or prefer the lower initial outlay.

Is 33.40 km/kg the mileage I should expect every day?
No. It is the current brochure’s certified CNG figure under Rule 115(G) of CMVR 1989. Traffic, load, air-conditioning, driving style and refuelling conditions can produce a different result.
Can I compare 24.90 km/l directly with 33.40 km/kg?
No. They use different units, and the petrol figure is for AGS while the CNG variants are manual. Convert each fuel to cost per kilometre using your local prices and matched, realistic economy estimates.
Does the Alto K10 CNG have less boot space?
The product listing gives 214 litres for petrol and marks CNG boot space as “NA.” Because no precise CNG figure is published there, inspect the actual car with your luggage before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow long will it take for CNG to recover its higher price?
There is no universal answer. Divide your actual on-road CNG premium by the fuel-cost saving per kilometre calculated from current local prices and realistic economy figures.
Is the ₹82,000 CNG premium the final amount I will pay?
No. ₹82,000 is the listed ex-showroom difference for the matched LXi (O) and VXi (O) manual trims on Maruti’s GST-revised page. Registration, insurance, schemes, accessories and finance can change the on-road difference.
What if I cannot find a CNG station on my commute?
Petrol is generally the more practical choice when CNG requires a significant detour, uncertain opening hours or queues you are unwilling to tolerate. Map your actual routes before booking.
Does the official information prove that CNG is safer or cheaper to own?
No. The listed material does not establish an independent safety comparison, local fuel-price advantage or complete cost-of-ownership result. Those require local quotes and evidence beyond the headline specifications.
