Choose the Alto K10 manual if you want direct gear selection and do not mind operating a clutch. Choose the AGS (the Alto K10’s name for an automated manual transmission, or AMT) if reducing clutch work in stop-and-go traffic matters more than choosing every gear yourself. Neither is objectively better on the evidence available. Your normal traffic, preferred driving feel, desired trim and the current city-specific price should decide the purchase.
Manual or AMT: the decision in one minute
The Alto K10 is sold with a five-speed manual transmission and, on selected petrol trims, Maruti Suzuki’s five-speed AGS (Auto Gear Shift). “AMT” is the broad category name commonly used for this type of transmission; AGS is Maruti’s name for its system.

- Pick the manual when you want to select gears directly, prefer a conventional clutch-and-shifter connection, or need the widest choice of trims and fuel types.
- Pick AGS when most of your driving is in congested urban traffic and you value avoiding repeated clutch operation. Maruti positions AGS as a city-convenience feature, not as a performance upgrade.
- Do not choose from the mileage number alone. The brochure’s certified figures are 24.39 km/l for petrol MT and 24.90 km/l for petrol AGS under CMVR Rule 115(G). They are laboratory certification results, not a promise of what every driver will achieve.
- Compare equivalent equipment and the final invoice. AGS is listed only on VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) petrol variants in the current listing reviewed on 13 October 2026. Manual versions are available more broadly, including the listed CNG choices.
A test drive in the traffic, slopes and roads you normally use is more useful than assuming that one transmission will suit every owner.
What the Alto K10 manual and AGS actually are
Five-speed manual transmission
The manual gives the driver direct control of the five forward gear selections through a clutch pedal and gear lever. You decide when to disengage the clutch, select a gear and release the pedal. That makes the relationship between your hand, foot and the car explicit: you can hold a lower gear for a climb, select a higher gear when the road opens, or change at the moment that feels right to you.

The trade-off is workload. Every stop, crawl, restart and gear change in heavy traffic requires clutch coordination. Drivers who enjoy that involvement may regard it as part of the Alto K10’s appeal; drivers who spend long periods in queues may find the repeated pedal operation tiring.
AGS, Maruti’s name for an AMT
AGS automates the clutch operation and gear selection of a manual-type transmission. You select the drive mode and the system carries out the gear changes, while the underlying petrol specification remains the same 998 cc engine and five-speed transmission family listed by Maruti. In ordinary use, its practical promise is less clutch work rather than a claim of faster acceleration or a sportier response.
Maruti’s official product overview describes the system as “Auto Gear Shift Technology to drive with the ease and efficiency of a manual, especially in city traffic.” That is manufacturer positioning. The available material does not provide an independent back-to-back test of shift smoothness, response time or driver comfort, so those qualities should be judged during your own drive.

The official Alto K10 brochure lists one petrol engine output and two petrol transmission choices. The figures below are brochure specifications; confirm that the current brochure supplied with your chosen car has not changed.

The 24.39 and 24.90 km/l figures are certification values published by Maruti Suzuki India Limited under CMVR Rule 115(G), not measured consumption on a particular road. Traffic density, speed, payload, tyre pressure, air-conditioning use, driving technique and maintenance can all change actual consumption. The figures should therefore be used to understand the certified difference between the two listed versions, not to calculate a guaranteed saving for your commute.
How the two transmissions feel in the situations that matter
Stop-and-go city traffic
AGS has the clearest practical advantage here: the system removes routine clutch-pedal operation while you creep, stop and restart. That is why Maruti presents it as especially convenient in city traffic. The benefit is a reduction in the driver’s physical tasks, not a quantified promise about comfort or fatigue. If your route includes long queues every day, spend enough time in similar traffic during the test drive to decide whether that reduction matters to you.
The manual can still be the better choice when you prefer to control every low-speed gear change, want a familiar pedal response, or use a city route that is busy only occasionally. A short, uncongested drive will not reveal the difference as clearly as a real peak-hour crawl.
Open roads and highways
Both versions use the same listed petrol engine output. The manual lets you choose the gear immediately and hold it for a specific bend, overtake or incline. AGS removes the need for clutch work, but the available evidence does not establish that its shifts are smoother, quicker or more responsive than a driver’s manual changes. On a highway test drive, concentrate on whether the system selects the gear you expect and whether you are comfortable with its timing; do not infer a result from the manufacturer’s city-convenience description.

Hills, ramps and tight manoeuvres
These situations expose how naturally you can control either car. In the manual, the clutch, accelerator and selected gear are under your direct control. With AGS, the car manages clutch and gear selection, so you should learn its behaviour on a ramp and in slow manoeuvres before buying. A dealer demonstration on a flat road is not enough if your regular parking area, apartment exit or commute includes steep gradients.
Drivers who enjoy involvement
If selecting a gear and coordinating a clutch is part of what makes driving enjoyable, the manual is the straightforward match. The manufacturer describes its manual gear shifts as engaging, but that is a product claim rather than an independent assessment. AGS is aimed at convenience; choosing it because you expect a more involving drive would conflict with the way Maruti positions the system.
Which Alto K10 variants have AGS?
The current Maruti Suzuki listing accessed on 13 October 2026 shows AGS on the VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) petrol trims. Manual petrol choices are available in lower trims as well, and the listed CNG choices are manual. That means transmission choice is also a trim and fuel-type decision: you cannot assume that every equipment level or CNG version can be ordered with AGS.

Equipment can differ between trims independently of the gearbox. Compare safety, convenience, infotainment, wheels, upholstery and other included features on the exact variant quote rather than comparing an AGS-equipped upper trim with a lower manual and attributing every difference to the transmission.

Price: compare the real gap, not an assumed premium
The manufacturer’s current page lists the following AGS ex-showroom prices at the time it was accessed. These are dated reference figures; the page also states that invoice-time prices and schemes apply. Registration, insurance, taxes, accessories, dealer charges and finance can change the amount you actually pay.

The evidence available here does not establish the corresponding manual price gap for every city or a universal AGS premium. Ask the dealer for written, same-day quotations for the same trim, colour and equipment. If an AGS car is compared with a manual from another trim, separate the gearbox cost from the value of the additional equipment.
Fuel economy: what the certified numbers do and do not tell you
The brochure’s certified result is 24.39 km/l for petrol MT and 24.90 km/l for petrol AGS. The 0.51 km/l difference is a certification result under the stated test rule; it is not evidence that every AGS owner will save 0.51 km/l in daily driving.

- Air-conditioning use, passenger and luggage load, tyre pressure and maintenance affect consumption in either transmission.
- Repeated short trips and crawling traffic can produce results far below a certified figure.
- Use the figures to compare the manufacturer’s declared versions, then track your own fuel use over several full tanks if running cost is important.
Do not pay for AGS solely because its certified number is higher. The financial value depends on the actual price difference, your annual distance and your real-world consumption, none of which can be calculated reliably from the certification figures alone.

Choose by driving pattern
Choose the manual when these statements describe you
- You want direct control over every gear and are comfortable using a clutch.
- Your driving is mostly on open roads or light traffic, where clutch workload is limited.
- You want access to a lower petrol trim or a listed CNG version that is not offered with AGS.
- You are comparing a manual and AGS at different equipment levels and the manual provides the features you actually need at a lower total price.
- You enjoy the involvement of coordinating engine speed, gear selection and clutch release.
Choose AGS when these statements describe you
- Your daily route contains frequent queues, repeated stops and slow urban crawling.
- You want to reduce clutch-pedal operation and are willing to let the system select gears.
- The VXi (O) or VXi+ (O) petrol equipment level suits you and the current on-road price fits your budget.
- You are prepared to spend time learning the system’s behaviour in your own traffic, on ramps and during parking manoeuvres.
When the answer is still uncertain
Book back-to-back drives in the same traffic window, ideally with the same passengers and route. Drive the manual first, then AGS, or reverse the order on a second day so that tiredness and traffic variation do not decide the result. Write down clutch effort, low-speed control, gear timing, visibility and seating comfort immediately after each drive. A transmission that looks attractive on a specification sheet may not suit your normal route.
A practical Alto K10 transmission-buying process

- Check ownership terms. The brochure states a 3-year/100,000 km warranty, extendable up to 6 years. Confirm the current warranty document and servicing terms for the exact vehicle; the cited brochure does not establish different warranty coverage by transmission.
- Record the final decision criteria. Choose the version that meets your traffic, control preference, equipment and written budget requirements. Do not let a small certified-efficiency difference override a transmission you dislike using.
Test-drive checklist for manual versus AGS
- Starting and stopping: In the manual, note how naturally you can find the clutch bite point. In AGS, observe whether the launch feels predictable to you.
- Low-speed crawling: Spend several minutes in slow traffic rather than driving only at open-road speeds.
- Gear selection: On the manual, check whether the lever positions are easy to select. On AGS, see whether the automatic changes occur at moments you consider appropriate; the available evidence does not provide a comparative smoothness rating.
- Inclines: Test a ramp or hill similar to your regular route, following the dealer’s safety instructions.
- Parking: Try reverse and forward manoeuvres in a confined but safe area. This is where precise speed control matters most to many city drivers.
- Noise and concentration: Notice whether you prefer actively managing the manual or monitoring AGS changes. This is a personal preference, not a published performance statistic.

What is not established by the available specifications
Official specifications answer the engine output, listed transmissions, certified efficiency, variants and warranty. They do not establish a universal real-world mileage result, a comparative shift-smoothness score, clutch or gearbox repair costs, resale differences, or which transmission every buyer will enjoy. No independent back-to-back road test or owner survey is cited for those questions.
That limitation matters when reading confident claims that AGS is always smoother, that a manual is always more reliable, or that one version will always return better mileage. Such statements go beyond the documented evidence. Use the manufacturer figures for the facts they cover and your own representative test drive for the personal choice.

Warranty and ownership checks
The Alto K10 brochure states a 3-year/100,000 km warranty, extendable up to 6 years. The cited material does not identify a transmission-specific difference in coverage. Before signing, read the current warranty booklet for exclusions, service requirements, distance limits and extension terms applicable to your vehicle and registration date.
For either transmission, keep the purchase invoice, delivery inspection record, warranty documents and scheduled-service invoices. Ask the dealer to identify the transmission type on the quotation and explain the service schedule in writing. Do not assume that a general warranty statement answers every clutch, actuator, software or gearbox-related claim; the current warranty terms control eligibility.
Final recommendation
The Alto K10 manual is the better match for a driver who values direct gear control, wants broader variant access or accepts clutch work as part of driving. The Alto K10 AGS is the better match for a driver whose priority is reducing clutch operation in congested city traffic and who is happy with the VXi (O) or VXi+ (O) petrol equipment levels. The manufacturer’s certified efficiency is slightly higher for AGS, but that laboratory difference should not be treated as a guaranteed saving. Compare the same equipment level, obtain a current local quote and test both cars in your normal traffic before choosing.
