Neither is automatically better for fuel economy, safety, or repair costs. The useful comparison is between the exact vehicles you are considering—and the transmission technology, driving conditions, and market you live in.
How manual and automatic transmissions differ
Manual transmissions
In a manual car, the driver chooses a gear and operates the clutch to connect or disconnect engine power during shifts. That means more direct control, but also more work—especially when repeatedly starting, stopping, and shifting in traffic. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes manual transmissions as requiring direct driver control of gear selection and shifting.
Automatic transmissions
An automatic selects gears without the driver operating a clutch pedal. But “automatic” is an umbrella term for different designs, not one uniform mechanism. Conventional automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), and dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs) work differently, and their driving feel and service requirements can differ as well.
What “automatic” can mean
Conventional automatic
Many traditional automatics use a torque converter to transfer engine power. A lockup feature can reduce losses through the converter; improvements such as torque-converter lockup helped make newer automatics more efficient, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Continuously variable transmission (CVT)
A CVT changes its effective ratio continuously rather than stepping through a fixed set of gears. Nissan says its XTRONIC CVT uses pulleys connected by a steel belt or chain. A CVT can feel different from a geared transmission, and its maintenance instructions are specific to the vehicle: Nissan warns that using the wrong fluid in its CVTs can damage the transmission. See Nissan’s XTRONIC CVT explanation.
Dual-clutch transmission (DCT)
A DCT uses clutch-based internals and automates gear changes. The EPA says DCTs can shift very quickly and avoid a torque converter. Their internal layout is closer to a manual’s than a conventional automatic’s, but the driver does not shift gears in the same way as in a manual car. Automaker reporting does not always list DCTs as a separate category, so an “automatic” label alone may not tell you which design a car uses.

Hybrids and electric vehicles
Do not assume every electrified car fits the familiar manual-versus-automatic choice. The EPA reports that battery-electric vehicles generally use a single-speed design, while hybrids and plug-in hybrids use a range of transmission technologies.
Is a manual more fuel-efficient?
No general rule says it is. DOE’s comparison of vehicles offered with both transmission types found that automatics had better average fuel economy beginning with model year 2016. The comparison used production-weighted harmonic means; the article’s 2018 data were preliminary. It describes a fleet trend, not a guarantee about every manual-and-automatic pair. Read the DOE’s model-year 2016 comparison.

- [Application] This car tuning accessory, the Z shift knob, is widely used in most cars, and is suitable for any manual or automatic transmission 4, 5, 6 transmission knob (not suitable for automatic shifters with buttons, only suitable for gated).
Modern automatics have improved in efficiency, and the number of gears in automatics has risen. In the EPA’s U.S. production data for model year 2024, eight-speed transmissions accounted for 33% of new-vehicle production; non-hybrid CVTs and transmissions with nine or more speeds each exceeded 20%. Those fleet figures help explain why the old “manuals always save fuel” shortcut is unreliable, but they do not predict a particular car’s fuel use. The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report discusses these transmission trends.
For a purchase decision, compare official fuel-economy ratings for the specific makes, models, engines, drivetrains, and model years on your list. A different engine or drivetrain can matter as much as transmission type.

Are new manual cars still available?
In the United States, manuals have become rare among new vehicles. DOE reported that more than 99% of U.S. light-duty vehicles produced in 2022 came with automatic transmissions; those 2022 production figures were preliminary. For comparison, 65% of light-duty vehicles produced in 1980 had automatics. The DOE’s figures also show that CVTs accounted for about one quarter of U.S. light-duty production in 2022, with the data again preliminary. See the DOE’s 2022 production summary.
The EPA’s 2025 report says manual transmissions have represented less than 1% of U.S. production since model year 2021 and are available in only a limited number of vehicles. These figures describe the U.S. market; availability differs by country and can change by model year.

Which transmission fits your driving?
| Priority | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Less work in stop-and-go traffic | An automatic avoids repeated clutch operation and manual gear selection. |
| Direct involvement in gear changes | A manual gives the driver direct control over gear selection and clutch operation. |
| Fuel economy | Compare the official ratings for the exact vehicles and model years; transmission type alone does not establish a winner. |
| More new-car choices in the U.S. | Automatic-equipped models are far more common in current U.S. production. |
| A particular driving feel | Identify whether the automatic is conventional, a CVT, or a DCT, then test-drive the actual car. |
Preference matters: some drivers enjoy the added involvement of a manual, while others value an automatic’s convenience. A test drive on the kinds of roads you use most can help reveal whether the shifting behavior and driver effort suit you.
Are manuals safer, or cheaper to maintain?
The available evidence here does not establish a universal safety winner. A 2024 peer-reviewed study examined Ghana crash data recorded from 2019 through 2022, including 1,856 automatic- and 2,272 manual-transmission vehicle-involved crashes. Its models found an association between manual transmissions and increased risk of incapacitating or fatal injury. The study is observational and specific to its data and setting; it cannot show that transmission type caused the difference or establish a ranking that applies to other countries and drivers. Read the Ghana crash-injury study.
There is also no established across-the-board maintenance or lifetime repair-cost winner. Expenses depend on the specific transmission and vehicle, as well as age, condition, use, parts, and local labor. Check the vehicle’s maintenance schedule and model-specific service information rather than relying on generic advice; fluid requirements, in particular, may be transmission-specific.
Quick Recap
How to compare the cars you are considering
- Confirm the transmission design. Check the vehicle specifications or ask the seller whether the automatic is conventional, a CVT, or a DCT. For an electrified vehicle, verify how its powertrain is configured.
- Compare the exact versions. Match model year, engine, drivetrain, and transmission when checking official fuel-economy ratings and maintenance requirements.
- Check local availability. If you want a manual, confirm that the transmission is offered on the specific trim and model year in your market.
- Test-drive in relevant conditions. Include traffic or roads similar to your normal use, and pay attention to driver effort and shifting behavior.
- Follow vehicle-specific service guidance. Use the maintenance schedule and specified fluids for that exact model and transmission.
