Did a Toyota Tundra really reach one million miles?
Toyota reported on May 11, 2016, that Sheppard’s 2007 Tundra had exceeded one million miles while retaining its original engine and transmission. Toyota described Sheppard as the truck’s sole owner and said he averaged 125,000 miles per year, often driving long-haul routes for work. The company said the truck was one of the early Tundras assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, in San Antonio.

This is a manufacturer-documented account of one truck, not a population statistic or independent survey of Tundra longevity. Toyota said it traded Sheppard a new 2016 Tundra for the high-mileage truck and planned a bumper-to-bumper teardown.
What did the truck’s maintenance history show?
Toyota reported 117 dealership service visits over nine years, including oil changes, timing-belt replacements, and regularly scheduled checkups. Ron Weimer, general manager of Greg Leblanc Toyota, said, “Victor has been loyal to his maintenance and kept it up.”

That documented history shows the truck received sustained dealer service. It does not isolate maintenance as the sole cause of its longevity, and the evidence does not show that any one service, part, or product produced the million-mile result.
What did the engine teardown find?
MotorTrend reported that Toyota’s Huntsville, Alabama, plant team first tested the 2UZ-FE on a dynamometer, taking it to its 5,700-rpm redline, before disassembly. The report described little carbon buildup on the valve stems, visible crosshatching on the cylinder walls, no visible wear marks on the crankshaft journals, and one slight mark on a bearing.

Toyota quality manager Connie Roberts told MotorTrend, “We remeasured the head, the block, and cams in our lab,” and said the measurements showed nothing abnormal. MotorTrend also reported that the engine would have scored 99 out of 100 on Toyota’s quality tests. That score describes the condition of this individual engine as assessed in the teardown; it is not a reliability rating for all 2UZ-FE engines, much less for the UR family.
The wider teardown also found components such as the frame, leaf springs, and driver’s seat holding up well. Those findings add context to the truck’s condition, but they do not change the engine identification.

Did the million-mile truck influence the 2022 Tundra?
In a later account, Toyota said observations from Sheppard’s truck contributed to the redesign of the 2022 Tundra. Toyota also said almost every component was functioning at the one-million-mile mark, with the driver-side sun visor detent and the six-digit odometer’s display limit as exceptions. These are Toyota’s descriptions of its engineering process and the truck’s condition.
Does this prove UR V8 Tundras can reach one million miles?
No. The million-mile truck was identified as a 2UZ-FE-powered Tundra, while Toyota’s 2019 guide excerpt separately associates the 3UR-FE with Tundra applications. The sources reviewed do not establish how often Tundras or UR-family engines reach one million miles, nor do they provide a comparative reliability study of UZ and UR engines. The accurate takeaway is narrower: one extensively serviced 2007 Tundra with a 2UZ-FE reached the milestone.
