An 80-year-old Rome resident drove a Mercedes-Benz A-Class partway down the Spanish Steps in the early hours of June 17, 2025, and became stuck. Police said he tested negative for alcohol and cited him for driving down the monument; firefighters removed the car with a crane. Officials did not explain how he reached the steps, and reports did not confirm damage to them.
What happened on the Spanish Steps?
The incident took place in Rome in the early hours of Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The Associated Press, citing municipal police, reported that the driver was 80 and a Rome resident. His name was not released. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class came to a stop partway down the landmark staircase.
Police said the driver tested negative for alcohol and cited him for driving down the monument. ANSA also reported that no one was injured. Firefighters used a crane to lift the vehicle off the steps, according to the Associated Press and ANSA.
Why did the man drive down the steps?
The reason has not been established. Police said the driver was at a loss to explain how he ended up on the staircase, but public reporting did not provide further details about the route or circumstances. There is no confirmed account that he followed a satnav, took a wrong turn, was medically confused, or intended to cause damage. The headline’s word “confused” should not be read as a confirmed explanation for the incident.

Was the Spanish Steps monument damaged?
Damage from the June 2025 incident has not been confirmed in the reports cited here. The car became stuck and was removed by crane, but those details alone do not establish that the staircase was damaged.
How this differs from the 2022 Maserati incident
A separate incident in 2022 involved a Saudi driver in a rented Maserati. ANSA reported that police cited him that May; in April 2023, it reported that he had been indicted for damage to cultural heritage and put the damage at around €50,000. That legal follow-up and damage estimate concern the 2022 case, not the 2025 Mercedes incident.

The Spanish Steps date to the 1720s and consist of 135 travertine steps. Their English name comes from the nearby Spanish Embassy to the Holy See. These historic features help explain the significance of reports involving vehicles on the staircase, but they do not establish damage in the 2025 incident.
