It was a one-off fabrication demonstration—not a tested replacement-key method, a compatibility guide, or a way to make a modern transponder key work.
How the wrench-to-key demonstration worked
Hackaday’s September 12, 2021 report describes cutting down the shaft of a 12 mm ratcheting wrench, then grinding it to the width and thickness of an older car key. The maker used a Dremel rotary tool with a cutting disc to shape the profile, marked channels with calipers, and finished the piece with filing and polishing. The report says the finished metal piece opened the car.
Those details are the source’s account of one project, not a verified set of instructions. It does not establish that the approach works for other vehicles, that the improvised key will last, or that the result was independently tested. A key must match a lock’s particular mechanical profile; the account is not a general blueprint for doing so.
Why mechanical fit is not enough for many modern cars
A metal blade can operate a compatible mechanical lock, but that does not mean a vehicle will authorize the engine to start. Many modern vehicles use a transponder key or fob that must be programmed to the vehicle’s security system. Pop-A-Lock explains this distinction in its car-key FAQ.

The reported wrench project concerns an older car without electronic key security. It should not be treated as a method for making a working transponder, remote, or smart key.
For a dependable replacement, contact a professional
If you have lost a key or need another one, contact an automotive locksmith or dealer and provide the vehicle’s make, model, and year. A professional can advise whether the replacement needs cutting, electronic programming, or both.
