Malaysia’s EV market grew sharply in 2023, while the government’s semiconductor strategy identifies electric vehicles as an opportunity for local power-chip suppliers. But those facts do not establish a current official forecast that EV sales will boom: the available government figures are historical, and the semiconductor strategy is an industrial opportunity, not a sales projection.
What Malaysia’s EV sales figures show
Malaysia recorded 13,257 new battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales in 2023, up from 3,127 in 2022, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). That is strong growth across those two years, but the figures do not show whether the pace continued or predict sales in 2026 and beyond. MITI’s 2023 annual report provides the historical comparison, not a current forecast.
What the semiconductor strategy has to do with EVs
MITI’s National Semiconductor Strategy, introduced in May 2024, treats global EV-market growth as an opportunity for Malaysia to supply power chips. These components are used in EVs and other energy-transition technologies. The strategy’s broader aims include strengthening the semiconductor value chain through research-driven innovation, expanded production capacity and talent development. It is an industrial strategy; it does not itself predict Malaysian vehicle sales or guarantee that local firms will win a particular share of EV-chip demand.
MITI states: “The growth of the global electric vehicle (EV) market presents an opportunity for Malaysia to become a key hub for supplying power chips to EVs, which are crucial for energy transition and decarbonisation technologies.” The strategy places that opportunity alongside policy frameworks including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap. Malaysia’s semiconductor trade: the 2024 baseline
MITI’s 2024 annual report records RM655.13 billion in semiconductor trade, comprising RM387.95 billion in exports and RM267.18 billion in imports. These figures show the scale of Malaysia’s semiconductor trade, but trade totals alone do not establish how much production is destined for EVs or how much domestic value local suppliers capture. The report says the government introduced the National Semiconductor Strategy in May 2024 to reinforce the value chain through innovation, capacity and skills development. See MITI’s 2024 annual report.

Does the task force mean EV sales will boom?
No such conclusion follows from the figures or strategy described here. Malaysia’s 2022–2023 BEV sales rise is evidence of past growth, and the semiconductor policy identifies a possible supply-side benefit if global EV demand grows. Neither is a current official projection of Malaysian EV sales for 2026 and beyond. The January 2024 TechTimes coverage framed the task force and semiconductor ambitions in relation to EVs, but its industry figures should be treated as claims in that article rather than independently verified government statistics. What would demonstrate a real EV-market forecast
A sales boom is a demand outcome, while the semiconductor strategy is primarily about strengthening supply capability. To assess whether EV sales are actually on track to rise, readers need subsequent Malaysian sales data or an explicit, dated government forecast with its assumptions and vehicle categories. To judge whether Malaysia benefits on the chip side, relevant evidence would include EV-related power-chip production, investment, capacity and customer demand. The cited trade totals and 2023 BEV figures do not answer those questions.
