Short answer: An AX7 is the better-equipped XUV700, but it is not automatically the better used-car purchase. Choose it only when its extra equipment is working, documented and worth the price premium. Choose petrol or diesel from your routes, annual use, transmission preference and the condition of the individual car—not from assumed mileage or reliability figures that have not been established on a comparable basis.
Before comparing two advertisements, write down each vehicle’s model year, AX5 or AX7 trim, seating layout, engine, gearbox and drivetrain. Then compare service records, kilometres, repairs, tyres and asking prices for genuinely similar cars.

Start by identifying the exact XUV700
“2022 XUV700” is not a sufficient description for a purchase decision. Equipment and quoted engine outputs vary by year, configuration and transmission, while an AX7 Luxury Pack is not the same specification as a standard AX7. Record the following from the registration documents, vehicle identification number (VIN), invoices and the car itself:
- Model year and registration date
- AX5, AX7 or AX7 Luxury Pack designation
- Five- or seven-seat layout, where applicable
- 2.0-litre turbo-petrol or 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine
- Manual or automatic transmission
- Front-wheel drive or any applicable all-wheel-drive configuration
- Odometer reading, number of owners and city of registration
Ask an authorised Mahindra outlet to confirm the VIN-based variant and equipment list. The owner’s manual advises checking the applicable variant matrix or an authorised dealer because features can differ between configurations. Do not rely solely on a seller’s badge, advertisement headline or a generic internet specification sheet.

AX5 versus AX7: what the extra money buys
In the documented brochure lineup, AX7 adds substantial comfort, convenience and safety equipment over AX5. The list below describes the stated additions, not a guarantee that every car carrying an AX7 badge has every item. Test each feature in the actual vehicle and confirm its fitment for that model year.

AX7’s equipment can improve daily comfort and active-safety capability, but it also gives a used buyer more components to inspect. A failed powered seat, sensor, camera, TPMS component or climate-control module may be more expensive to diagnose than a simpler AX5 fault. That is a reason to verify operation, not a reason to assume AX5 is mechanically superior.
Do not confuse AX7 with AX7 Luxury Pack
The Luxury Pack adds equipment beyond AX7. A seller may use “AX7” loosely in a listing, so obtain the original invoice, VIN-based confirmation or an authorised-dealer printout. Price and equipment comparisons are invalid if one car is a standard AX7 and the other is an AX7 Luxury Pack.

AX5 can make sense when the car has stronger service records, fewer kilometres, better tyres and cleaner accident history than a more expensive AX7. It is also sensible when you do not value ADAS, powered-seat memory, dual-zone climate control or the other AX7 additions enough to accept extra purchase cost and repair exposure. A well-maintained AX5 is preferable to a neglected AX7.

When AX7 justifies a premium
Pay more only after confirming that the individual AX7’s added systems work, the trim is correctly identified and the service history supports the asking price. Give particular attention to ADAS warnings, cameras, sensors, powered-seat operation, TPMS readings, climate-control performance and wheel or tyre damage. Do not pay an AX7 premium for a car with unexplained warning lights or missing documentation.
Petrol versus diesel: compare the powertrains accurately
The XUV700 engine families are a 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Official material quotes different power and torque outputs according to engine and transmission, so a single number should not be treated as universal for every XUV700.

There is no dependable, directly comparable real-world fuel-economy, lifecycle-cost or reliability dataset established here for petrol versus diesel. Do not promise a buyer a particular kilometres-per-litre figure or claim that one engine is universally more reliable. Ask instead how the car was used, how it was serviced and whether its present condition supports the seller’s price.
Choose petrol when your usage supports it
Petrol is easier to justify when your driving is dominated by short trips, irregular use or routes where diesel-specific after-treatment care would be inconvenient. It can also suit a buyer who prefers the petrol power delivery or finds a particular petrol car substantially cleaner and better documented than nearby diesel alternatives. These are decision principles, not a guarantee of lower running cost.

Choose diesel only with a credible usage and maintenance history
Diesel can suit high-use owners who value its characteristics and can maintain it correctly, but a used diesel’s history matters more than the badge. Ask for fuel and service invoices, look for dashboard warnings and establish whether the car’s previous routes and maintenance were compatible with proper DPF operation. A low-odometer diesel with repeated warning lights is not automatically a bargain.
Diesel DPF and fuel checks
Mahindra’s manual warns that diesel fuel above 10 parts per million sulfur, or unspecified additives, can damage the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Ask the seller exactly where the vehicle was fuelled and whether any additives were used. Do not accept “premium” or aftermarket additive claims as proof of correct maintenance; obtain the fuel specification and service evidence.
- Switch the ignition on before starting and note any DPF, engine or emissions warning lamps.
- Start the engine cold if possible. Record unusual smoke, uneven idle, warning messages or a cooling fan that runs abnormally.
- Review invoices for the correct diesel services and investigate gaps rather than accepting a stamped booklet without supporting detail.
- Ask whether the car has experienced DPF warnings, limp mode, forced regeneration or emissions-related repairs.
- Have a qualified technician scan the vehicle and assess the exhaust system before committing to purchase.
Use the exact vehicle’s service guide for oil grade, capacity and service intervals. The information above does not establish a universal repair cost or a model-wide DPF failure rate.
Transmission, drivetrain and seating must match the comparison
Compare manual with manual and automatic with automatic. Gearbox choice changes the driving experience, specification and likely buyer pool, and the official engine outputs may differ by transmission. During the inspection, check clutch take-up and gear selection on a manual; on an automatic, check engagement from cold and warm, smooth upshifts and downshifts, reverse selection and any hesitation or warning message.

Confirm whether each candidate is front-wheel drive or an applicable all-wheel-drive version. Do not compare an AWD car’s price with a front-wheel-drive car’s price as though drivetrain were irrelevant. Check tyre brand, size and tread consistency across all four corners, and inspect the spare wheel and underbody for damage.
Seat count also affects value and practicality. Verify the registration document and physically inspect the third-row seats, belts, access mechanism and cargo configuration on a seven-seat vehicle. A listing that says “XUV700” without seating information is incomplete.

Build your own comparison set from several local listings that match year, AX5/AX7, engine, transmission, seating and drivetrain. Then adjust your judgement for kilometres, number of owners, service completeness, accident or repair evidence, tyres and immediate maintenance. Treat every dealer figure as an invitation to inspect, not proof of value.
Inspection checklist before you pay a deposit
1. Establish identity and paperwork
- Match the VIN and registration number on the car, documents and invoices.
- Confirm model year, ownership count, seating layout, exact trim and engine.
- Check that the odometer agrees with service invoices and other available records.
- Look for unexplained gaps, duplicated invoices, inconsistent dates or sudden changes in recorded kilometres.
2. Inspect the body and structure
- View the car in daylight and look for paint mismatch, overspray, uneven panel gaps and replaced lamps or glass.
- Inspect the roof, pillars, door shuts, boot floor and underbody for repair marks or distortion.
- Check wheels for cracks or buckling and tyres for uneven wear, age, mismatched brands or incorrect sizes.
3. Drive and listen
- Test the engine from cold and again at operating temperature.
- Check steering straight-line tracking, brake pedal feel, braking stability, suspension noise and clutch or automatic-gearbox behaviour.
- Test air conditioning at all settings and confirm that the engine does not overheat or show warning messages.
- Drive over representative surfaces; a silent driveway inspection will not reveal every suspension or drivetrain problem.
4. Test every AX7 feature fitted to the car
- Operate the powered driver’s seat, memory and welcome retract.
- Check both climate zones, auto headlamps and rain-sensing wipers.
- Verify cameras, parking sensors, TPMS readings and ADAS status without assuming that a warning will appear during a short drive.
- Check infotainment, steering controls, windows, locks, mirrors, charging ports and all warning lamps.
5. Commission an independent inspection
An independent, qualified inspection is useful when you cannot assess accident repairs, electronics, underbody condition or diagnostic codes yourself. A buyer discussion supports this as sensible practice, but it is not an official Mahindra inspection standard. Give the inspector the VIN, the seller’s claims and the exact equipment list so the report tests the car you are actually considering.
Service history, recalls and negotiation
A complete history is more valuable than a polished presentation. Request dated invoices, authorised-service records where available, insurance or repair documentation and evidence of tyre or battery replacement. Match the work claimed to the odometer and ask why any major interval is missing. For a diesel, specifically request DPF and emissions-related records; for an AX7, request evidence that sensors, cameras, powered-seat controls and climate systems have been repaired correctly rather than merely reset.
Check outstanding recalls or service campaigns for the exact VIN directly with Mahindra. A general internet statement cannot establish a VIN-specific recall status.
Negotiate from documented differences: a missing service interval, worn tyres, accident repair, warning lamp, non-working AX7 feature or immediate maintenance requirement. Compare the car with several like-for-like local advertisements, but do not subtract an invented fixed amount for every defect. Obtain a repair estimate and decide whether the seller’s price still makes sense after that work.
Common mistakes that make an XUV700 purchase expensive
- Comparing an AX7 Luxury Pack with a standard AX7 as if they were identical.
- Using the 2022 asking-price band as a valuation for a different year, city or configuration.
- Choosing diesel solely on an assumed mileage advantage without checking route pattern and DPF history.
- Accepting a low odometer reading without matching invoices and inspection evidence.
- Testing only the engine and ignoring sensors, cameras, climate controls, tyres and underbody damage.
- Relying on a listing’s “excellent condition” description instead of a cold start, road test and diagnostic inspection.
- Assuming a warning-light reset proves the underlying fault was repaired.
A practical decision sequence
- Filter advertisements by model year, seating, AX5 or AX7, engine, gearbox and drivetrain.
- Remove cars with missing identity documents, contradictory kilometres or no credible service history.
- Compare the remaining asking prices with several local, like-for-like listings and the dated ₹15.8 lakh–₹21.0 lakh 2022 reference only as broad context.
- Inspect the body, tyres, engine, transmission, suspension, electronics and trim-specific equipment.
- For a diesel, verify DPF warnings, fuel history and service evidence; for an AX7, verify every added feature.
- Obtain an independent inspection and VIN-specific recall or campaign check.
- Price the car only after accounting for immediate maintenance, then make an offer based on documented condition rather than the badge.
The Bottom Line
Buy the best-documented, best-inspected XUV700 you can find. AX7 earns a premium only when its additional equipment works and the condition supports it; petrol versus diesel should follow your actual usage and the particular car’s maintenance history, with special scrutiny of diesel DPF care.
