The absence of a specification is not evidence that Mahindra will never build the vehicle. A later announcement could change the position, so check Mahindra’s current product page and release information immediately before placing a booking. Until then, treat “XUV 3XO CNG” as a possible future product rather than an available alternative.

The Nexon iCNG reference point
Turbocharged engine figures
The Nexon iCNG brochure specifies a 1.2-litre, 1,199 cc, three-cylinder turbocharged Revotron engine. Its stated maximum power is 73.52 kW at 5,000 rpm, with 170 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,000 rpm. Those are the manufacturer’s published figures; they are not an independent road-test result. Equipment and specification can vary by variant or persona, so a brochure headline should not be assumed to describe every Nexon iCNG sold.
If Mahindra introduces a CNG XUV 3XO, compare its CNG-mode power and torque with the Nexon figures using the same units and the same operating mode. A petrol-mode number, a peak figure measured under a different fuel or a marketing conversion cannot be treated as a like-for-like result. Ask the dealer to identify which figures apply in CNG mode and whether the vehicle starts, accelerates and climbs on CNG under the conditions you expect.
Twin-cylinder packaging and luggage space
Tata specifies two CNG cylinders and 321 litres of boot space for the iCNG. The 321-litre number is explicitly a VDA-method measurement, which makes the method part of the specification. It is a practical baseline, not proof that every loading shape or luggage set will fit in the same way.

Starting and switching behaviour
Tata’s launch announcement describes direct starting in CNG mode and automatic petrol/CNG switching through a single ECU. Confirm that the exact variant you intend to buy retains those functions. Ask for a demonstration after the car has been parked and restarted, and observe whether the driver receives a clear fuel-status indication.

Do not assume an unannounced Mahindra system would work identically. A future XUV 3XO CNG specification should state its start-up fuel, switching logic, petrol reserve requirement and what happens when CNG pressure is low. Those details affect daily convenience more than a headline engine number.
Why a direct “winner” table would be misleading today
A normal comparison table needs two confirmed products. Here, one column would require invented Mahindra data. The responsible comparison is therefore a decision matrix showing what you can verify now and what must wait for an official announcement.

Tata’s 2024 launch release announced an introductory Nexon iCNG starting price of ₹8.99 lakh. That was a dated introductory figure at launch, not a current India-wide retail price. Prices change with variant revisions, taxes, registration, insurance and dealer charges, so it should not be used in a 2026 budget.
- Choose the exact Nexon iCNG persona and transmission you can actually buy.
- Request an itemised quote from an authorised dealer in your registration city, dated the same week as any Mahindra quote.
- Separate ex-showroom price from registration, road tax, insurance, handling or optional accessories.
- Ask whether the quote assumes a cash purchase, finance, exchange bonus or another conditional discount.
- For a future XUV 3XO CNG, repeat the process only after Mahindra publishes the variant and price; do not use the petrol or diesel XUV 3XO price as a proxy.
Comparing two on-road totals from different cities or months can reverse an apparent price advantage. Keep the city, date, variant and transmission beside every number.

How to compare performance without inventing a Mahindra result
Separate official figures from road impressions
The Nexon’s 73.52 kW and 170 Nm are certified brochure specifications. They do not tell you how quickly a loaded car overtakes, how often the system changes fuel or how the clutch feels in traffic. A road test can answer those questions, but only if the test identifies fuel mode, route, payload, tyre pressures and weather.

No named independent comparative test of an XUV 3XO CNG was identified in the available material. Until one exists, do not publish or rely on an estimated Mahindra acceleration time, CNG power figure or “better pickup” claim.
Use the same test route
Once both cars are available, drive each on a repeatable route: stop-and-go traffic, an open road, a representative incline and a parking manoeuvre. Record the fuel mode, number of occupants, luggage, air-conditioning use and whether the car was cold-started. A short dealer drive with an empty car cannot establish fuel economy or long-term refinement.
Ask about fallback operation
CNG cars retain a petrol system, but the exact fallback strategy differs. Ask how much petrol the car requires, whether petrol is needed for starting or system protection, what warning appears when CNG is depleted and whether the car switches automatically. A claimed ability to start directly on CNG should be confirmed on the exact Nexon variant; it should not be presumed for a future Mahindra.
Boot and everyday practicality checks
The Nexon’s twin-cylinder layout is designed to preserve a stated 321 litres of VDA boot volume, but a number alone does not answer every family-use question. Take the bags, child-seat equipment or work cases you normally carry to the showroom. Measure the opening, floor length and height to the parcel shelf, and check whether the spare-wheel or puncture-repair arrangement occupies useful storage.

For the XUV 3XO CNG, wait for a published tank diagram or inspect the production car. Verify the number and placement of cylinders, the location of the filling valve, access to the petrol filler, ground clearance around the tank and the space left for luggage. Do not infer any of these from the petrol or diesel XUV 3XO.
Safety, warranty and service questions
A fuel type does not by itself establish a vehicle’s safety performance. Check the tested model year and exact body or powertrain, then distinguish standard equipment from optional or higher-variant equipment. For either car, ask the dealer to identify airbags, electronic stability functions, hill-start or parking aids and tyre-pressure information on the specific quotation rather than on a top-trim display car.
For a future Mahindra CNG, require a crash-test result or a clear statement that none is available for that exact configuration. A petrol XUV 3XO rating cannot automatically be transferred to a CNG model if the tank installation changes mass distribution or underbody structure.
Read the warranty conditions for the CNG components, periodic inspection requirements and exclusions. Check which authorised workshops near your home and regular routes can service the high-pressure system, whether trained technicians are available and how parts are supplied. Apply the same questions to the Nexon iCNG; the existence of a launched model does not make every dealer equally convenient.
Fuel economy and ownership-cost method
Keep certified fuel economy and real-world consumption in separate columns. A laboratory or certification figure is useful for comparing cars tested under the same regulatory method, but your result depends on traffic, temperature, tyre pressure, passenger load, air-conditioning and the proportion of petrol operation.

- Fill to the same practical stopping point and save the quantity and price shown by the station.
- Track petrol added separately from CNG; a CNG-only calculation is misleading if the system uses petrol.
- Repeat over several tanks and include your normal urban and highway mix.
- Compare cost per kilometre, scheduled service and insurance—not fuel price alone.

- For the XUV 3XO, proceed only after Mahindra publishes a CNG variant and complete specifications.
Company-reported sales context is not a reliability verdict
Mahindra reported that XUV 3XO sales crossed 2.5 lakh in under 2.5 years in its September 2026 release. Tata’s 2024 launch release quoted its commercial chief saying that more than seven lakh Nexons had been sold in seven years. These figures provide market context as reported by the manufacturers; they do not measure CNG reliability, safety, resale value or owner satisfaction, and they should not be used as a substitute for those checks.

The XUV 3XO CNG remains unconfirmed in the Mahindra material reviewed, so claims about its price, mileage, power, tank arrangement, luggage space or launch timing would be speculation. Buy the Tata if you need a documented CNG SUV now and its exact variant passes your practical checks.
