First, correct the premise: the Mahindra Thar ROXX is a five-seat SUV, while the Mahindra Scorpio-N is sold in six- and seven-seat configurations. If you may regularly carry a sixth or seventh passenger, the Scorpio-N is the practical starting point. If five seats are sufficient, the choice comes down to luggage requirements, parking space, powertrain and drivetrain, equipment, and whether you will use the ROXX’s off-road hardware.
In Autocar India’s August 2026 comparison of the Thar ROXX AX7L and Scorpio-N Z8L, the Scorpio-N costs more in the listed matching configurations but provides a third row and substantially more cargo volume with that row folded. The ROXX has more stated ground clearance and a five-seat cabin. Neither is the right answer for every buyer.

For either vehicle, compare like with like: the same fuel type, transmission, drivetrain and equipment grade. The prices and specifications below come from dated manufacturer releases and Autocar India’s August 2026 top-variant comparison; obtain a current local quotation before buying.
Seating and everyday practicality
Thar ROXX: a dedicated five-seat layout
The Thar ROXX has two rows and five seating positions. That makes the cabin simpler to plan around: every passenger uses one of the five permanent seats, and the luggage area is available without folding a third row. Its reported boot volume is 447 litres in the Autocar comparison.
Scorpio-N: six or seven seats
The Scorpio-N can be configured with six or seven seats, depending on the variant. A six-seat version uses captain’s chairs in the second row, while a seven-seat version uses a second-row bench; confirm the arrangement on the exact vehicle you are considering. Its published 786-litre figure applies with the third row folded and five seats in use, not with all seven seats occupied.

A family that occasionally transports grandparents, friends or children’s teammates may use the extra row often enough to justify the Scorpio-N. A two-adult, two-child household that never needs more than five places may gain more from the ROXX’s uninterrupted five-seat cargo arrangement.
Loading and parking implications
In the top-trim dimensions reported by Autocar, the Scorpio-N is 4,662 mm long and 1,917 mm wide. The ROXX is 4,428 mm long and 1,870 mm wide. The 234 mm difference in length and 47 mm difference in width can affect garage clearance, tight parking spaces and access on narrow streets. Measure your parking bay and take both vehicles through the turns you normally make rather than relying only on brochure numbers.

The ROXX has a longer stated wheelbase—2,850 mm versus 2,750 mm for the Scorpio-N—despite being shorter overall. Wheelbase alone does not determine usable room, so sit in both rows with the people who will actually travel in the vehicle and check knee clearance, step-in height and child-seat placement.

These are comparison figures for the specified top variants, not a promise that every model year or trim has identical dimensions or cargo packaging. Use the manufacturer’s current specification sheet for the vehicle you are ordering.
Engines, gearboxes and four-wheel drive
Shared engine families, different variant outputs
Both SUVs offer a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. The engine names alone do not tell you the final output, gearbox or drivetrain: those vary by trim.
Mahindra’s Thar ROXX launch specification lists the 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol at 130 kW and 380 Nm, and the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel at 128.6 kW and 370 Nm. The same launch material lists six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions. Later variant comparisons show different figures for particular ROXX configurations, so treat the launch numbers as the stated launch specification rather than a universal value for every derivative.

Because the compared petrol automatics differ in quoted power, a buyer who values acceleration should drive the exact two vehicles being considered rather than assume that displacement makes them equivalent. For diesel buyers, the matching 175 hp/400 Nm figures in this comparison do not remove the need to verify transmission, 4WD system and equipment level.

What the ROXX 4XPLOR system adds
Mahindra’s September 2024 four-wheel-drive announcement describes the ROXX 4XPLOR system with an electronic locking differential, a low-ratio transfer case and terrain modes. It also states a 650 mm water-wading capability. Those are manufacturer-published capability claims, not a recommendation to enter water of that depth or tackle a difficult trail without recovery equipment, route knowledge and appropriate judgement.
Four-wheel drive is relevant when you regularly encounter loose surfaces, steep climbs, ruts or wet trails. It does not automatically make a vehicle safer or faster on every road, and it adds hardware that may be unnecessary for an urban commute. Confirm that the specific ROXX or Scorpio-N trim has 4WD before paying for an off-road-oriented use case.
Equipment and cabin priorities
The top-variant comparison highlights different approaches to equipment. The ROXX AX7L is listed with a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon system and single-zone climate control. The Scorpio-N Z8L is listed with a larger 12.30-inch infotainment screen, a 12-speaker Sony audio system and dual-zone climate control.

These are trim-specific observations, not a statement that every lower variant carries the same equipment. Compare the actual feature list for the petrol, diesel, manual, automatic and 4WD combination you intend to purchase. A larger screen or extra speakers should not outweigh a seating layout that does not suit your family.
Safety evidence: what can and cannot be concluded
Thar ROXX Bharat-NCAP result
Mahindra’s November 14, 2024 press release reports a five-star Bharat-NCAP result for the Thar ROXX: 31.09 out of 32 for adult occupant protection and 45 out of 49 for child occupant protection. Those scores belong to the tested ROXX configuration and should be quoted with the test name and score.

Why this is not a head-to-head safety verdict
Mahindra also describes the Scorpio-N as one of its five-star-rated vehicles, but the available material does not establish a directly comparable protocol, model year and score for both SUVs. It is therefore not valid to declare one safer than the other from these figures alone.
Safety equipment and child-seat checks
The ROXX launch release says six airbags are standard and identifies seat-belt reminders, ISOFIX child-seat anchors and Level 2 ADAS among its safety equipment. The Autocar top-trim comparison lists six airbags and Level 2 ADAS for both vehicles. Verify which assistance functions are standard on the exact trim, and install your child seats in the real second-row positions before signing a purchase order.
Price: compare the configuration, not a headline number

Ex-showroom prices exclude registration, insurance, road tax, accessories, financing costs and other local charges. Ask a dealer for a written on-road quote that names the model year, fuel type, gearbox, seating configuration, drivetrain and every included option. A lower sticker price can disappear if the two quotes contain different equipment or drivetrain specifications.

Choose the Scorpio-N for regular people-moving
- You may need six or seven seats, even if most journeys use only five.
- You want the option of folding the third row and using the reported 786-litre cargo area with five seats occupied.
- The larger body, bigger infotainment display, 12-speaker audio system or dual-zone climate control is a priority.
- Your parking space and daily routes can accommodate a vehicle 4,662 mm long and 1,917 mm wide.
The third row is the decisive practical advantage. Do not buy it solely for a brochure number: sit in the rearmost seats, check access with the second row in its normal position and load the bags you carry on family trips.
Choose the Thar ROXX for five-seat and rough-road priorities
- Five seats cover your normal passenger needs.
- You value the 226 mm stated ground clearance and the availability of 4XPLOR features on the right diesel variant.
- You prefer a shorter and narrower vehicle for your garage or daily parking environment.
- The AX7L or another ROXX trim offers the specific combination of powertrain, features and price you want.
The ROXX’s higher clearance does not by itself prove superior trail performance. Tyre choice, approach and departure angles, vehicle load, surface conditions and driver skill still matter.

When neither should be selected immediately
Pause if you cannot identify the exact variant. “2.0 petrol,” “2.2 diesel” and “automatic” cover multiple configurations, and 4WD is limited to selected variants. Also pause if your decision depends on fuel economy, long-term reliability or service cost: the available evidence does not establish owner-tested economy, a reliability comparison or a service-cost comparison.
A disciplined buying and test-drive checklist
- Write down the real passenger count. Include occasional passengers, grandparents, friends and child-seat requirements. If a sixth or seventh passenger is plausible, inspect the Scorpio-N’s relevant layout before comparing equipment.
- Match the specification. Compare petrol with petrol or diesel with diesel, then align manual or automatic, two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and equivalent equipment grades.
- Measure your parking environment. Use the published length and width as a warning, then test door opening, turning radius and mirror clearance at home or work.
- Bring normal luggage. Place suitcases, a stroller, sports equipment or shopping bags in each boot. In the Scorpio-N, repeat the exercise with the third row raised and folded.
- Test every seating position. Adjust the driver’s seat for the usual driver, then check second-row knee room, third-row access where applicable, headroom and child-seat anchorage.
- Drive the exact powertrain. Evaluate low-speed clutch or automatic behaviour, highway acceleration, braking and visibility in the trim you would buy. Do not infer the petrol automatic’s response from the diesel automatic.
- Verify the drivetrain and safety list in writing. Ask the dealer to identify 4WD hardware, terrain modes, airbags, ADAS functions, ISOFIX points and any optional-cost items on the quotation.
- Request a current on-road quote. Check the date, model year, taxes, insurance, registration, accessories and discounts. Treat the cited ex-showroom figures as reference points only.
What is not established by the available figures
No owner-tested fuel-economy data, real-world ride comparison, long-term reliability comparison, current on-road price, waiting period or service-cost comparison is established here. Those variables can materially affect ownership, but assigning precise values without attributable, current evidence would be misleading.
Likewise, a Bharat-NCAP score for the ROXX should not be converted into a direct ranking against the Scorpio-N without matching test details. The safest conclusion supported by the available information is narrower: the ROXX has the reported five-star result and both compared top trims are listed with six airbags and Level 2 ADAS, while the protocols and scores are not directly comparable in the material available.

The Scorpio-N is the more sensible family tool when its additional seating will actually be used, and its folded-third-row luggage capacity or Z8L equipment is worth the larger dimensions and higher listed price. The Thar ROXX is the better fit for a five-person household that values its higher stated ground clearance, available off-road hardware and potentially lower price in a matched configuration.
Make the final choice only after matching the same fuel, gearbox, drivetrain and trim, loading your normal luggage, checking the seating positions and obtaining a current local on-road quote. The deciding question is not which name sounds tougher; it is whether you need the Scorpio-N’s extra seats or will get more value from the ROXX’s five-seat layout and off-road specification.
