Choose the Thar ROXX if your priorities are trail-focused hardware, a distinctive outdoors-oriented character and, where required, a diesel 4×4 variant. Choose the Scorpio-N if six- or seven-seat flexibility, regular family travel and group carrying ability matter more. Neither nameplate is one uniform specification: engines, transmissions, seating layouts, drive systems, equipment and prices change by variant. The sensible purchase is the exact version that matches your passengers, roads, annual use and budget—not a blanket winner.
Start with your use case, not the badge
Both vehicles are Mahindra body-on-frame SUVs, but they solve different problems. The Thar ROXX is presented by Mahindra as a refined, adventure-oriented evolution of the Thar, with dedicated low-speed off-road aids and a diesel-only 4×4 option. The Scorpio-N is the more practical starting point when you need a six- or seven-seat cabin and expect to carry family or friends regularly. Mahindra also positions the Scorpio-N among its vehicles suited to family, group and off-road travel; that is manufacturer positioning, not an independent road-test conclusion.

What the two SUVs have in common—and where they diverge
Shared body-on-frame architecture
Both SUVs use a separate-frame layout and are sold with several engines, transmissions and trim levels. That construction is relevant to buyers who regularly use poor roads or need a robust, high-riding vehicle, but it does not by itself prove superior ride comfort, fuel economy or reliability. Mahindra has not published an independent comparison establishing a winner for those measures.
Different design priorities
Mahindra describes the Thar ROXX as a new generation of refined body-on-frame SUVs on its M_GLYDE platform. In the launch material, R Velusamy, President of Automotive Technology and Product Development at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said: “Thar ROXX represents a new era of refined body-on-frame SUVs, built on our all-new M_GLYDE platform.” Veejay Nakra, President of Mahindra’s Automotive Division, described the Thar brand as symbolising freedom and community. Those statements explain the product’s intended character; they are not independent measurements of refinement or capability.

The Scorpio-N’s strongest practical distinction is its choice of six- and seven-seat layouts. That flexibility can outweigh a feature advantage if you routinely carry children, grandparents or a group of adults. The Thar ROXX’s launch specification instead highlights its second-row dimensions, large claimed boot and off-road systems. Inspect both cabins with the people and luggage you actually carry.
Powertrains and transmissions: compare the selected variant

The figures above come from Mahindra’s July 20, 2024 launch specification. They are manufacturer ratings, not an acceleration or fuel-consumption test. Mahindra’s later variant guide recommends a petrol automatic RWD when the vehicle will be used mainly in the city and discusses the diesel automatic for road trips. Treat that as buying guidance from the manufacturer, then check fuel availability, annual distance, local restrictions and the price premium for the version you want.
Scorpio-N engine and gearbox spread
The Delhi variant page lists petrol and diesel versions from Z2 through Z8L, with manual and automatic transmissions and selected 4WD variants. It lists petrol peak power of 149.14 kW at 5,000 r/min. Diesel listings show 97 kW at 3,750 r/min in an entry configuration and 128.6 kW at 3,500 r/min in higher diesel listings. Torque, gearbox, drive system and infotainment equipment vary by the individual trim, so a headline “Scorpio-N power” figure is incomplete unless it names the engine and variant.
When comparing quotations, write down the complete specification: seat layout, engine, gearbox, RWD or 4WD, safety equipment, driver-assistance features and included wheels or accessories. Two vehicles carrying the same badge can have materially different equipment and performance figures.
Seating, boot space and family practicality
Scorpio-N: choose six or seven seats deliberately
Mahindra’s Scorpio-N page provides six- and seven-seat filters. A six-seat arrangement can be preferable if second-row captain’s chairs and easier movement are more useful than maximum passenger capacity; a seven-seat version is the logical choice when you occasionally need the extra place. Confirm the exact arrangement on the quotation because the choice is variant-specific.

Take the vehicle to a test drive with the child seats, bags and passengers you normally use. Have an adult sit in the third row, check knee and head room, and load the boot with all seats occupied. A third row that is acceptable for occasional children may be unsuitable for adults on a long trip.
Thar ROXX: verify the real luggage requirement
The launch specification states 644 litres of boot space measured up to the roof and gives second-row dimensions. The measurement is a manufacturer claim and does not tell you how much usable space remains with a parcel cover, a stroller or tall luggage in place. Open the tailgate, measure the floor and load your largest everyday items before signing.
Child-seat checks
Mahindra’s Thar ROXX launch material lists ISOFIX child-seat anchors with top tether, three-point belts and belt reminders for all seats. If you are shopping for an ISOFIX-compatible child car seat, verify that the seat fits the exact vehicle position, that the top-tether route is usable and that local child-restraint rules are met. Do not assume that an ISOFIX label guarantees compatibility in every seating position or with every child seat.
Off-road hardware and when it matters
Thar ROXX systems
Mahindra lists 4XPLOR terrain modes, electronic locking differentials, Crawl Smart Assist and IntelliTurn for the Thar ROXX. The company also specifies 650 mm of water-wading depth, a 41.7-degree approach angle, 36.1-degree departure angle and 23.9-degree ramp-over angle. These are manufacturer specifications; actual progress depends on tyres, surface, driver technique, vehicle load, water conditions and recovery planning.
Only the mHawk diesel is offered with 4×4 according to Mahindra’s variant guide and launch material. If you need four-wheel drive, begin by filtering to diesel, then confirm that the precise trim includes the transfer-case controls, differential functions and safety equipment you expect. A petrol automatic RWD may be the more rational Thar ROXX for city driving, but it is not a substitute for a diesel 4×4 when traction is the deciding requirement.

Scorpio-N 4WD versions
Mahindra’s Scorpio-N page lists selected 4WD variants and identifies the model among its off-road-capable SUVs. Availability and equipment differ by trim, so ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact 4WD controls and state whether the quoted vehicle is six or seven seats. Do not infer that every Scorpio-N diesel or every high trim has 4WD.
Do you really need 4×4?
- Choose 4×4 when you regularly encounter loose climbs, deep mud, rocky tracks, sand or water crossings where controlled traction is more important than purchase simplicity.
- Choose RWD when your driving is almost entirely paved and you value lower complexity, easier urban use or a lower purchase price; confirm the exact equipment and local conditions first.
- Remember that ground clearance, tyres, recovery points, driver skill and route knowledge can matter as much as the drive selector. Neither manufacturer’s specification is a guarantee that a trail is safe.
City, highway and daily-use decision
For urban commuting
Mahindra’s June 2026 guide points buyers who mainly drive in cities toward the Thar ROXX petrol automatic RWD. That recommendation reflects the manufacturer’s variant guidance, not an independently measured mileage or comfort result. During your test drive, evaluate steering weight at parking speeds, sight lines, turning space, ride over speed breakers, automatic-gearbox response and whether the vehicle fits your parking bay.
The Scorpio-N may be preferable if the higher seating capacity is used often, but a larger cabin can be inconvenient when most trips carry one or two people. Compare door opening, child loading, tailgate reach and the route to your regular parking space rather than relying on exterior impressions.
For highways and road trips
Mahindra discusses the Thar ROXX diesel automatic as a road-trip option. The Scorpio-N’s six- or seven-seat choice may be more valuable when a trip includes several passengers. On the motorway, test overtaking response with the intended load, wind noise, seat support, cruise-control operation if fitted, headlight performance and luggage security. The published power figures do not predict real-world refinement or consumption.
Fuel economy and ownership claims
No verified independent comparison of real-world fuel economy, ride comfort, reliability or total ownership cost is established here. Do not choose between these SUVs on an internet mileage number without knowing the test route, traffic, tyre pressures, load, fuel and driving style. Ask the dealer for the applicable official efficiency information for the exact engine and gearbox, then budget using your own annual kilometres and local fuel price.

Safety: strong published evidence, but not a score-to-score contest
Mahindra’s Thar ROXX launch material lists six airbags, three-point belts and reminders for all seats, ISOFIX anchors with top tether, electronic stability programme and Level 2 ADAS features. On November 14, 2024, Mahindra reported a five-star Bharat-NCAP result for the Thar ROXX: 31.09 out of 32 for adult occupant protection and 45 out of 49 for child occupant protection.
The same Mahindra announcement names the Scorpio-N among the company’s five-star-rated models, but it does not provide a directly comparable Scorpio-N score in that release. Therefore, it is not valid to rank one SUV above the other using the Thar ROXX numbers alone. Check the applicable assessment record and the safety equipment on the exact Scorpio-N trim you are considering; airbags, ADAS and other features can vary by version.
For a family purchase, inspect the actual belt geometry, child-seat anchor position, third-row access and ease of securing a child without blocking another passenger. A five-star label is useful context, but it does not replace correct child-seat installation or safe loading.
Prices, trims and the cost of a fair comparison

Do not compare the Thar ROXX’s lowest displayed range figure with a Scorpio-N top diesel 4WD, or compare an RWD manual with a 4WD automatic, and call the difference a model advantage. Request itemised, same-city quotations for two genuinely comparable vehicles. Include registration, insurance, accessories, extended warranty if offered, financing interest and any dealer-installed items.
Build a variant shortlist
- Write down the minimum seating requirement: occasional five-person use, six seats or seven seats.
- Decide whether 4×4 is a genuine requirement or merely an attractive option. If it is essential for the Thar ROXX, restrict the search to diesel.
- Choose fuel and gearbox based on annual distance, traffic, fuel availability and local rules rather than the engine’s headline power.
- Mark non-negotiable safety and convenience equipment, including child-seat anchors, ADAS, parking aids and the infotainment features your family actually uses.
- Obtain local on-road quotes for the shortlisted trims and check delivery or availability directly with an authorised Mahindra dealer.
- Test-drive the exact engine, gearbox, seat layout and drive system. A different showroom demonstrator cannot answer every variant question.
Test-drive checklist that separates the two
Before moving
- Confirm the VIN or variant name on the vehicle and match it with the quotation.
- Adjust the driver’s seat, steering wheel and mirrors; then check whether a rear-facing child seat can be installed without compromising the front seat.
- In the Scorpio-N, enter and exit the third row, fold the seats and load your normal luggage. In the Thar ROXX, measure the boot opening and floor for your largest item.
- Inspect the 4WD selector, terrain-mode controls, differential functions and recovery equipment on the exact off-road variant.
On the road
- Drive over broken pavement and speed humps at normal speeds to assess body movement and seat support for yourself; do not treat one short drive as a laboratory comfort test.
- Use tight turns and a parking manoeuvre to judge visibility, turning space, steering effort and camera or sensor usefulness.
- On a safe open road, evaluate automatic response, clutch effort if manual, braking feel and overtaking confidence with the intended passenger load.
- Listen for wind, tyre and suspension noise, and check that every occupant can communicate comfortably.
- Operate the child locks, seat-belt reminders, infotainment, climate controls and driver-assistance settings before leaving the dealership.

- Which exact engine, gearbox, seat layout and drive system does this price cover?
- Which safety and ADAS features are standard on this trim, and which are unavailable?
- What are the registration, insurance, tax and accessory amounts in my state?
- Is the quoted price a recurring list price or a limited promotion, and when does it expire?
- What service intervals, warranty terms and roadside-assistance terms apply to this exact vehicle?
Common mistakes when choosing
Buying 4×4 for image alone
Four-wheel drive adds capability and cost, but it does not improve every urban trip. If your roads are paved and you never use trails, compare a petrol automatic RWD Thar ROXX or a suitable Scorpio-N RWD against the 4WD alternatives on price, tyres, manoeuvrability and your actual needs.

Assuming every Scorpio-N seats seven
The model is offered in both six- and seven-seat forms. Verify the configuration on the order form and physically test the third row before paying a booking amount.
Using launch pricing as a current quote
The Thar ROXX launch prices date from 2024. Current availability and prices can change, and the Scorpio-N figures cited are for Delhi ex-showroom. Your final on-road amount is determined by city, RTO, tax, insurance and selected equipment.
Turning marketing language into a test result
Statements about refinement, freedom, family suitability or capability describe Mahindra’s product intent. They do not establish measured ride comfort, reliability, fuel economy or ownership cost. Use the test drive and a written quote to fill those decision gaps.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Thar ROXX when…
- You want the Thar identity and expect to use the vehicle on trails or rough access roads.
- You specifically need diesel 4×4 and will use its terrain aids rather than simply owning them.
- Your passenger and luggage requirements fit the Thar ROXX’s actual cabin and boot after a physical check.
- A petrol automatic RWD suits your city-heavy routine and you prefer that configuration over a larger multi-seat vehicle.
Choose the Scorpio-N when…
- You regularly need six or seven seats and want the flexibility to carry a group.
- Family access, third-row usability and luggage capacity are more important than the Thar’s dedicated off-road controls.
- You want to select among petrol or diesel, manual or automatic and available 4WD variants according to budget and route.
- The exact Scorpio-N trim offers the safety and convenience equipment your passengers require at a sensible local on-road price.
When neither is the obvious answer
If you rarely carry more than four people, never leave paved roads and prioritise easy parking, low running cost or a softer urban ride, test both carefully before committing to a body-on-frame SUV. The available evidence does not establish that either model is universally better in those areas.

The Thar ROXX is the focused choice for an outdoors-minded buyer who values its diesel 4×4 hardware or wants a petrol automatic RWD city configuration with Thar character.
