Which SUV fits your use case?
Choose the Thar ROXX for a five-person family and mixed daily use
The ROXX is the more natural fit when the vehicle normally carries up to five people. Its two-row cabin avoids the compromises that come with adding a third row, while the documented equipment list includes powered and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a touchscreen and Level 2 ADAS on specified trims. The availability of an automatic transmission also matters in heavy urban traffic.
Its drivetrain range is wider. Depending on the version, you can select petrol or diesel, manual or automatic, and rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. That lets a buyer avoid paying for hardware they will not use, although it also makes the trim sheet more important: a rear-wheel-drive ROXX is not an equivalent comparison to a permanently four-wheel-drive Gurkha when trail use is the priority.
Choose the Gurkha 5-Door when seven seats are a real requirement
The Gurkha’s defining practical advantage is its three-row, seven-seat 2-3-2 layout. If six or seven occupants are regularly part of the trip, that additional row is more useful than a longer feature list in a five-seat vehicle. Seat count alone does not prove that the third row has the same comfort or luggage space as the first two rows, so inspect the actual cabin with your family and luggage before ordering.

The Gurkha is also the more purpose-focused choice on paper. Its documented equipment includes a snorkel and an electronic shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive system with 2H, 4H and 4L modes. Those controls and the stated 233 mm ground clearance are relevant when driving on rough tracks, loose surfaces or water crossings, provided the driver understands how to use them.

Powertrains and transmissions
Thar ROXX engines
Mahindra’s August 15, 2024 launch release describes a 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi turbo-petrol producing 130 kW and 380 Nm, and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel producing 128.6 kW and 370 Nm. The release lists six-speed manual and Aisin automatic transmission options. These are manufacturer-published figures and should be read alongside the specific engine, transmission and drive combination on the quote.
Autocar’s selected comparison vehicle is narrower: an AX7L 2.2 diesel manual 4×2, listed with 2,198 cc displacement, 152 hp and 330 Nm. That output listing does not replace the launch-release figures for every diesel configuration; it identifies the particular vehicle used on that comparison page. The same page identifies the selected ROXX as rear-wheel drive, which is why it should not be treated as representative of the four-wheel-drive versions.
Gurkha 5-Door engine and gearbox
Autocar’s compared Gurkha 5-Door uses a 2,596 cc diesel engine rated at 140 hp and 320 Nm, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel drive. The Gurkha evidence available here is automotive editorial coverage rather than an independently verified test or a detailed Force Motors specification sheet, so confirm the latest engine calibration, equipment and homologation details with an authorised seller.

- The ROXX gives you more ways to match the powertrain to your driving: petrol for buyers who prefer that character, diesel for long-distance or torque-focused use, and an automatic option for convenience.
- The Gurkha’s appeal is less about a broad transmission menu and more about having four-wheel drive and low-range gearing available in the compared configuration.
- Peak power and torque figures from different variants cannot predict acceleration, fuel consumption or trail performance without matching vehicle weights, gearing, tyres and test conditions.
Seating, cabin comfort and everyday practicality
ROXX: a simpler five-seat layout
The ROXX’s two-row arrangement is easier to live with if most trips involve one to five occupants. Everyone sits in the main cabin, and the vehicle does not require access around a third row. Mahindra’s launch and brochure material document equipment such as a touchscreen, powered and ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof on applicable trims. The brochure also makes clear that equipment is not uniform across the range.

For a family buyer, check the exact seat upholstery, seat adjustment, rear air vents, charging points, camera system, audio hardware and luggage arrangement on the trim you are considering. A feature named for the model is not automatically standard on every version.
Gurkha: three rows for people, with a different priority
The Gurkha’s 2-3-2 seating layout is the decisive advantage for buyers who need seven places. It can carry two people in the front, three in the middle row and two in the rear row, subject to the manufacturer’s stated occupant and payload limits. Take a test sit with all rows occupied; the published seat count does not establish third-row legroom, access space or luggage capacity behind the last row.
HT Auto characterises the Gurkha as prioritising off-road capability over premium equipment. That does not mean it lacks useful features, but it does indicate a different design brief from the more comfort- and technology-oriented ROXX. If your typical week is school runs, commuting and highway travel, compare noise, ride comfort, climate-control operation and seat support in person rather than assuming that a rugged appearance equals a comfortable daily drive.
Off-road hardware and intended terrain
What the ROXX brings
On applicable four-wheel-drive variants, Mahindra describes its 4XPLOR system with electronic locking differentials, terrain modes, Crawl Smart Assist and IntelliTurn. The launch release states a 650 mm water-wading depth. These systems can make difficult surfaces easier to manage, but the equipment is drivetrain- and trim-dependent. A 4×2 ROXX does not have the same four-wheel-drive capability as a 4XPLOR-equipped version.

What the Gurkha brings
HT Auto reports a snorkel, electronic shift-on-the-fly 4WD with selectable 2H, 4H and 4L modes, coil springs at all four wheels, 233 mm of ground clearance and a 700 mm water-wading capacity. The reported wading figure is 50 mm greater than the ROXX figure published by Mahindra. A snorkel can help protect the engine’s air intake in a properly prepared crossing, but it does not make every water crossing safe: depth, current, entry speed, surface, exit angle and recovery support remain critical.
How to compare the two fairly
- Identify the exact ROXX variant and confirm that it has four-wheel drive if off-road use is central to the decision.
- Compare the tyre size and pattern, approach and departure geometry, underbody protection and spare-wheel arrangement on the actual vehicles.
- Check whether the routes you intend to drive contain mud, rocks, sand, steep climbs or water; different hardware advantages matter in different conditions.
- Learn the 2H, 4H and 4L procedures or the ROXX’s drive-mode controls before attempting difficult terrain.
- Treat the published water-wading numbers as limits from the cited specifications, not as a guarantee of damage-free crossing or superior performance in every trail situation.
On paper, the Gurkha has the clearer hardware-first brief and the higher quoted wading capacity. The ROXX counters with more electronic assistance and a choice of four-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive configurations. Neither specification sheet substitutes for tyres, recovery equipment, route knowledge and driver skill.
Safety equipment and driver assistance
ROXX safety specification
Mahindra’s launch release says six airbags are standard on the ROXX. It also lists three-point belts and reminders for all seats, ISOFIX child-seat provisions, stability control, traction control and Level 2 ADAS features. The official brochure shows that several comfort, infotainment and assistance features vary by trim, so ask the dealer to mark each item against the exact variant and model year.
Level 2 ADAS can support the driver with functions such as assistance in maintaining speed, distance or lane position, but it does not make the vehicle autonomous. Keep your hands, attention and responsibility on the driving task, and check which functions are active on the chosen trim.

Gurkha safety information
HT Auto lists a tyre-pressure monitoring system among the Gurkha’s features. The material reviewed for this comparison does not establish an independently comparable crash-test rating for the exact current ROXX and Gurkha 5-Door versions. Do not call either vehicle safer overall simply because one list contains more electronic features.
Safety checks before booking
- Request the current official equipment sheet for the exact variant, including airbag count, electronic stability functions, ISOFIX points, seat-belt reminders and tyre-pressure monitoring.
- Ask whether ADAS functions are standard, optional or unavailable on the selected ROXX trim.
- Inspect the child-seat installation points and test the second- and third-row access if children will use them.
- Confirm the manufacturing date, warranty terms and any software or sensor calibration requirements at delivery.
Prices, variants and the danger of headline comparisons
Mahindra’s dated launch prices
Mahindra’s August 15, 2024 launch release gave introductory ex-showroom prices starting at ₹12.99 lakh for the petrol MX1 and ₹13.99 lakh for the diesel MX1. Those are launch prices from 2024, not a current on-road quotation. Registration, insurance, taxes, accessories and dealer charges can materially change the amount payable.
Autocar’s selected-variant comparison
At the time of its page capture in 2026, Autocar displayed ₹23.15 lakh for an AX7L 2.2 diesel manual 4×2 ROXX and ₹21.39 lakh for a Gurkha 5-Door 2.6 diesel manual. These figures describe the specific configurations selected by that comparison and the page’s pricing context; they are not a universal price for either model and are not a substitute for a live quote in your city.
HT Auto’s different starting-price snapshot
HT Auto’s comparison article, updated July 16, 2026, reported starting ex-showroom prices of ₹12.52 lakh for the ROXX and ₹17.62 lakh for the Gurkha 5-Door. The difference from Autocar’s numbers is expected because the articles use different trim definitions and price snapshots. Starting price and top-trim comparison answer different buying questions.
How to obtain a usable purchase price
- Write down the exact model, engine, transmission, drive type and trim.
- Ask an authorised dealer for the current ex-showroom price in your city.
- Request a line-by-line on-road quote covering registration, insurance, taxes, handling or logistics charges, accessories and any finance fees.
- Ask how long the quote remains valid and whether a price revision is scheduled before delivery.
- Compare like for like: a five-seat ROXX 4×2 manual and a seven-seat Gurkha 4WD manual are not equivalent equipment packages.
Which one should you buy?
Pick the Mahindra Thar ROXX if most of these statements describe you
- You normally carry five or fewer occupants.
- You want to choose between petrol and diesel.
- You prefer an automatic for urban traffic or frequent commuting.
- You value documented cabin technology, powered or ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof or available Level 2 ADAS, subject to trim.
- You want the option of rear-wheel drive for ordinary use or four-wheel drive for recreational trails.
- You are willing to verify the exact 4XPLOR equipment instead of assuming every ROXX has the same off-road system.
Pick the Force Gurkha 5-Door if most of these statements describe you
- You genuinely need seven seats and a third row.
- You want four-wheel drive as a core part of the vehicle rather than an optional configuration.
- You expect to use 2H, 4H and 4L modes on rough tracks, sand, mud or steep terrain.
- A snorkel, 233 mm stated ground clearance and the reported 700 mm wading capacity are more valuable to you than premium cabin equipment.
- You are comfortable with the compared five-speed manual diesel configuration.
Cases where neither headline specification settles the decision
If you are choosing mainly for highway refinement, fuel economy, maintenance cost, insurance or long-term resale, the material available here does not provide a comparable, dated total-ownership-cost study. Obtain written service schedules, warranty terms, insurance quotes and realistic fuel estimates for your annual distance. Those costs can outweigh a difference in showroom equipment.
If serious off-roading is occasional rather than routine, consider whether you need a four-wheel-drive vehicle at all. A ROXX 4×2 may meet a commuter’s needs, while a Gurkha’s hardware may be underused. Conversely, selecting a 4×2 solely because it is cheaper is a poor match if your regular route demands low-range gearing or reliable traction.
A practical test-drive and inspection checklist
- Confirm identity: Photograph the variant name and check the vehicle identification details against the quotation.
- Test every seat: Sit in the front, middle and, for the Gurkha, third row. Check entry, knee room, headroom, visibility and access with the seats adjusted for the intended occupants.
- Check daily controls: Operate the climate control, touchscreen, cameras, parking sensors, charging ports, seat ventilation and driver-assistance settings on the exact vehicle.
- Evaluate the gearbox: In the ROXX automatic, check low-speed smoothness and creep. In either manual, assess clutch effort, gear engagement and visibility during manoeuvring.
- Inspect the cargo area: Load the items you actually carry. A seven-seat layout can leave less luggage room when all three rows are in use; do not infer capacity from exterior size.
- Review four-wheel-drive controls: Ask the representative to demonstrate the ROXX’s applicable terrain systems or the Gurkha’s 2H, 4H and 4L selection procedure.
- Check the underside and tyres: Look for the protection, tyre type and spare-wheel arrangement appropriate to your roads and trails.
- Get the final quote: Tie the test-drive vehicle to a written ex-showroom and on-road price, delivery estimate and included equipment list.
What the available evidence does not prove
- There is no verified head-to-head road or off-road test behind this comparison, so the article does not claim that one vehicle rides, accelerates, corners or climbs better in every situation.
- The reviewed material does not establish a directly comparable independent crash-test result for both exact current variants.
- No comparable, dated total-ownership-cost data was established for fuel, maintenance or insurance.
- Gurkha specifications such as the snorkel, 233 mm clearance and 700 mm wading capacity are attributed to HT Auto’s July 16, 2026 comparison coverage; confirm current equipment with Force Motors or an authorised dealer.
- ROXX features can vary substantially by trim, so a brochure headline or a top-version review should not be used to describe the entry version.
Bottom line for the Thar ROXX vs Gurkha 5-Door decision
Buy the Mahindra Thar ROXX for a five-seat family SUV with the broader powertrain and transmission choice, stronger documented comfort and technology equipment, and the flexibility to select rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive by variant. Buy the Force Gurkha 5-Door when seven seats and dedicated four-wheel-drive hardware are non-negotiable. Before signing, compare exact trims, verify the equipment sheet and obtain a current on-road quote for your city; the published prices and specifications are not all from the same variant or date.
