Mahindra Thar Roxx 4×4: How to Use Off-Road Modes and Terrain Settings

A practical Mahindra Thar Roxx guide to Terrain Mode controls, Snow, Mud and Sand settings, 2H/4H/4L selection, speed limits and off-road safety.

On the Mahindra Thar Roxx, Snow, Mud and Sand are terrain calibrations, not substitutes for the 4×4 transfer-case range. The owner’s manual says these modes can be activated only when the vehicle is in 4WH or 4WL. Press the Terrain Mode switch, cycle to the required setting, and confirm the mode and activation message on the instrument cluster or infotainment display. Normal is the only terrain setting listed for 2H.

Use Snow for low-grip surfaces such as snow, ice, wet grass or gravel; Mud for muddy or slippery ground; and Sand for soft sand where maintaining momentum is important. Mahindra expressly warns not to drive in 4H on tarmac or firm roads because driveline components can be damaged. The exact switches, screens and off-road aids vary by Thar Roxx variant, so verify the controls in the manual supplied with your vehicle.

Terrain mode and 4×4 range do different jobs

It helps to separate two controls that are often confused:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Transfer-case range: 2H, 4H (called 4WH in the terrain-mode table) and 4L (4WL) determine which drivetrain range and traction setup the vehicle uses.
  • Terrain mode: Normal, Snow, Mud or Sand changes the vehicle’s control strategy for the surface, including throttle response and, on automatic versions, transmission shift behavior.

The Thar Roxx owner’s manual lists Normal as available in 2H, 4H and 4L. Snow, Mud and Sand are listed only in 4H and 4L, and the manual states that a terrain mode is available only in 4WH or 4WL. Selecting Snow, Mud or Sand while still in 2WD therefore does not activate the calibration: the vehicle displays a “Select 4×4 mode” alert. Engage the appropriate transfer-case range using the full procedure in your vehicle’s manual, then select the terrain setting.

Do not infer a transfer-case shift sequence from the Terrain Mode button. Speed, transmission position, vehicle movement and other conditions can matter, and controls differ by equipment. Use the range-selection instructions for your exact Thar Roxx.

Think of the range as the mechanical operating choice and the terrain mode as the electronic calibration layered on top. A low range can provide more controlled wheel torque at low speed, while the terrain setting changes how the accelerator, stability systems and automatic transmission respond to the surface. Neither control replaces a suitable line, tyres with usable tread, or a decision to turn around when conditions exceed the vehicle or driver.

How to select Snow, Mud, Sand or Normal

TFT instrument-cluster configuration

  1. Switch the vehicle on and put it in the required 4×4 range if you intend to use Snow, Mud or Sand.
  2. Press the physical Terrain Mode hard switch in the centre-fascia switch bank.
  3. The terrain-mode page opens on the instrument cluster.
  4. Press the same hard switch again to cycle through the available modes. Stop when the required mode is shown.
  5. Read the cluster indication and activation message before moving onto the obstacle or surface.

Digital infotainment configuration

  1. Engage 4WH or 4WL when selecting Snow, Mud or Sand, following the transfer-case procedure in the manual.
  2. Press the physical Terrain Mode switch. The terrain page opens on the infotainment display.
  3. Press the switch repeatedly to cycle modes, and confirm the selected mode on screen.
  4. Alternatively, open the infotainment access drawer from the home screen, select the Terrain Mode soft switch, and choose the mode on the screen.
  5. Check for the selected-mode indication and activation message. If “Select 4×4 mode” appears, the vehicle is still in 2WD; engage 4WH or 4WL manually.

Normal returns as the default after each ignition cycle, according to the owner’s manual. That means you should check the display after every restart rather than assuming that the previous Snow, Mud or Sand selection remains active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the display and the physical switch appear to disagree, trust the confirmation shown by the vehicle and stop to consult the manual. A mode icon without an activation message should not be treated as proof that the transfer case has changed range. The 25 February 2026 owner’s manual is the appropriate reference for the controls fitted to that vehicle, because screen software and switch layouts can differ.

Which Thar Roxx mode should you use?

Mode Intended surface What the vehicle is trying to do Driver feel and cautions
Normal Ordinary road driving Uses the regular road calibration. Default after each ignition cycle. Listed for 2H, 4H and 4L.
Snow Snow, ice, water, grass or gravel Prioritises controllable traction on low-grip surfaces. Use smooth steering, throttle and braking. Avoid sudden acceleration or sharp braking in snow.
Mud Mud and slippery ground Allows a traction-focused response when the surface is loose and slick. Automatic versions may hold gears longer under acceleration and downshift earlier during deceleration.
Sand Soft sand Supports maintaining wheel speed and vehicle momentum, particularly while climbing dunes. Automatic versions may upshift later and downshift earlier. Avoid stopping where momentum is needed to keep moving.

Normal: the road setting

Normal is the everyday calibration and the only mode the manual lists for 2H. Use it for ordinary paved travel and for situations where no special low-grip or soft-surface strategy is needed. If you have just started the vehicle, verify Normal or select the terrain setting required for the route; the previous ignition cycle’s mode is not carried over.

Snow: reduce abrupt inputs

Mahindra describes Snow as suitable for snow, ice, water, grass and gravel. The mode cannot create grip where the tyres and surface have none. On a slick surface, keep steering, accelerator and brake inputs progressive. The manual specifically advises against strong inputs such as sudden acceleration or sharp braking in snowy conditions. Leave extra room for stopping and avoid treating the mode as permission to drive quickly.

Water in the Snow description does not mean that the vehicle is approved for any depth of water. A shallow wet patch, a flooded road and a moving stream present very different risks. Check the entry, exit and bottom before committing, and use the published wading figure only as a manufacturer reference rather than a target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mud: expect a different automatic shift pattern

Mud is intended for muddy and slippery surfaces. In an automatic Thar Roxx, the manual says the transmission can hold gears longer while accelerating and downshift earlier during deceleration. Those shifts may sound or feel unusual compared with Normal, but they are part of the selected calibration. Maintain a steady path, avoid unnecessary wheelspin and use 4L when the route requires the extra pulling power or control that low range provides.

Mud depth and consistency matter. A firm, wet track may need only 4H, whereas a deep rut or steep exit may justify 4L. The mode itself does not measure depth or identify hidden rocks, so walk the route when practical and plan where the vehicle can stop without blocking the trail.

Sand: protect momentum

Sand mode is for soft sand, where losing momentum can leave the vehicle bogged down. Mahindra emphasises maintaining momentum, especially when climbing dunes. Automatic versions can upshift later and downshift earlier in this mode. Look well ahead, choose a line that does not require an abrupt stop, and make inputs smoothly. Momentum is not the same as excessive speed: follow the manual limits and the conditions around you.

Approach a dune only after checking what lies beyond its crest. A blind crest can conceal another vehicle, a sharp drop or a cross-slope. If the vehicle begins to bog down, avoid repeated high-throttle wheelspin; stop using the recovery method and equipment appropriate to your vehicle rather than digging deeper.

Choosing between 4H and 4L

4H (4WH)

The manual describes 4H as adding traction on loose or slippery surfaces. Snow, Mud and Sand are available in this range. However, Mahindra’s warning is unambiguous: “Do not drive in 4H when in tarmac or firm road, this is essential to avoid damage to drive line components.” Do not leave 4H engaged for a paved-road section merely because a terrain mode is selected. Return to the appropriate road range according to the transfer-case instructions.

That warning is about the surface, not just the speedometer. A dry, firm parking area or a stretch of concrete can create the same driveline stress as a highway. Change back before joining such a surface, using the prescribed procedure and the conditions specified in the manual.

4L (4WL)

4L is the low-range choice for maximum pulling power and traction. The manual cites steep climbs or descents and hard pulling in sand, mud or deep snow as examples. Low range can give the driver finer control at low speed and reduce the need to use excessive throttle, but it does not make an obstacle safe. Select it only where the route and the manual’s operating conditions call for it, and complete the range change before the difficult section whenever the procedure requires that.

Terrain mode and range should be chosen as a pair: use the surface-specific calibration in 4H or 4L, then select the range that matches the gradient, resistance and control needed. The mode does not replace correct tyre pressure, line choice, recovery planning or cautious driving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Speed limits stated for Snow, Mud and Sand

The owner’s manual lists a maximum of 120 km/h in 4WH and 60 km/h in 4WL for Snow, Mud and Sand. These are stated vehicle limits, not recommended speeds for rough ground, dunes, mud or snow. Actual safe speed can be much lower because visibility, surface grip, obstacles, gradients and traffic change continuously. Follow any lower limit shown by road signs or required by local law.

  • ✅【360° FREE ROTATION】 - With an adjustable swivel ball joint, you can rotate your smartphone or device at your own will, providing the best viewing angle. Quickly pick and place with one hand, free your hands and make calls and GPS navigation more convenient

Do not interpret the 120 km/h figure as a reason to use 4H on a motorway or other firm road. The same manual warning about driveline damage on tarmac still applies. The speed limit and the permitted surface are separate constraints. In practice, a loose trail, dune face or icy lane may require a small fraction of the stated maximum.

Matching the setting to a changing route

Trails often change surfaces within a few metres. A gravel approach can become mud, or a snowy track can expose wet grass and then firm pavement. Select the mode for the section you are entering, not for the most difficult patch you saw earlier. When the route returns to firm road, use Normal and the road range as directed rather than continuing in 4H.

When conditions are mixed, avoid rapid cycling between modes while concentrating on an obstacle. Find a safe place to stop, read the display, and confirm the transfer-case state before proceeding. If a warning or “Select 4×4 mode” message appears, resolve it before entering the difficult surface. The vehicle’s confirmation message is more reliable than relying on memory of the last switch position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the terrain modes do not guarantee

A mode changes the vehicle’s programmed behavior; it cannot guarantee traction, braking distance or a successful climb. Snow mode cannot overcome polished ice, Mud mode cannot prevent the vehicle from sinking in deep sludge, and Sand mode cannot recover a vehicle that has lost all momentum in a soft bowl. Select a route within your experience, inspect the surface where possible and have a recovery plan before entering terrain from which reversing may be difficult.

Mahindra’s 4XPLOR description refers to an electronic locking differential for traction. That is a feature of the relevant 4×4 system, not proof that every Thar Roxx has the same hardware or that a lock can replace correct wheel placement. Use only the aids installed on your vehicle and shown in its manual.

Variant, drivetrain and screen differences

Equipment is not uniform across the Thar Roxx range. Mahindra’s specifications distinguish 4XPLOR terrain modes from RWD XPLOR terrain modes. Launch material also associates CrawlSmart and IntelliTurn with particular diesel 4×4 automatic variants. A 4×4 badge alone is not enough to establish which assistance systems, switches or screens your vehicle has.

  • Check the drivetrain and variant listed on your vehicle documents.
  • Look for the physical Terrain Mode switch in the centre-fascia switch bank.
  • Confirm whether your vehicle uses the TFT cluster page, the infotainment terrain page, or both.
  • Use the owner’s manual supplied for that equipment level rather than instructions for a visually similar trim.

If a control shown in a video or another owner’s vehicle is absent from yours, that is usually an equipment difference rather than a failed system. The official care-and-maintenance material also lists a Mahindra “Thar ROXX | Terrain Modes” video, but the manual for your vehicle remains the authority for operation.

Published off-road dimensions and water-wading figure

Mahindra’s 2024 launch material publishes a 41.7° approach angle, 36.1° departure angle, 23.9° ramp-over angle and 650 mm water-wading depth for the Thar Roxx specification described there. These numbers help explain why the vehicle is designed for off-road use, but they are not guarantees that a particular obstacle or crossing is safe.

Approach, departure and ramp-over angles depend on the exact vehicle configuration, tyre, load and the shape of the obstacle. Water depth is only one part of a crossing: current, entry and exit surfaces, hidden holes, debris and water movement can make a crossing unsafe well below the published figure. Never use the 650 mm number as a target depth, and do not enter water whose bottom, exit or current you cannot assess.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a mode before selecting 4×4: Snow, Mud and Sand will not activate in 2WD; the display will request 4×4.
  • Leaving 4H on pavement: Mahindra specifically warns of driveline damage on tarmac or firm roads.
  • Assuming the previous mode remains active: Normal returns after each ignition cycle.
  • Treating a speed limit as a target: 120 km/h in 4WH and 60 km/h in 4WL are maximums, not sensible off-road speeds.
  • Assuming every trim has the same aids: 4XPLOR, CrawlSmart, IntelliTurn and screen layouts depend on variant and drivetrain.
  • Using published geometry as a guarantee: angles and 650 mm wading depth are manufacturer figures, not permission to attempt an unknown obstacle.

Troubleshooting common selection problems

The display says “Select 4×4 mode”

The manual associates this alert with being in 2WD while a non-Normal mode is selected. Stop in a safe place, engage 4WH or 4WL using the transfer-case procedure for your vehicle, and check the display again. If the alert remains, return to Normal and consult the vehicle manual or Mahindra service support rather than continuing to cycle the switch while moving.

The selected mode is not shown after restarting

Normal is the default after each ignition cycle. Re-select Snow, Mud or Sand when conditions require it, and verify the activation indication before entering the surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transmission holds a gear or downshifts unexpectedly

In automatic vehicles, longer gear holding in Mud, earlier downshifts in Mud, and later upshifts or earlier downshifts in Sand are described as normal mode behavior. If the behavior occurs in Normal, is accompanied by a warning light, or does not match the selected mode, stop safely and seek a diagnosis.

The infotainment option is missing

Some vehicles use the TFT route and others the digital route. Try the physical Terrain Mode switch first. If your vehicle has the digital configuration, open the home-screen access drawer and look for the Terrain Mode soft switch. If neither control exists, verify the variant and consult its equipment-specific manual; do not assume a software fault or retrofit a control.

The vehicle will not leave 4H

Do not force the selector or invent a shift sequence. Follow the exact transfer-case procedure, including any required vehicle state, in the manual for your trim. If the indication does not change or a warning appears, remain on a suitable surface and contact Mahindra support.

A practical pre-drive checklist

  • Identify the actual surface: paved road, snow or ice, wet grass or gravel, mud, or soft sand.
  • Confirm the transfer-case range required and engage it using the manual’s complete procedure.
  • Select Normal, Snow, Mud or Sand with the physical switch or infotainment page.
  • Verify the mode and the activation message on the cluster or infotainment display.
  • Check that the planned speed remains below the applicable 4WH or 4WL maximum and is appropriate for visibility and grip.
  • Use smooth controls on low-grip surfaces; preserve momentum in sand without exceeding a safe speed.
  • Before returning to tarmac or another firm road, disengage 4H as directed by the manual and select the normal road range.
  • Carry a communication method and recovery plan when travelling beyond immediate help; do not rely on a terrain button to solve a stuck-vehicle situation.

The essential sequence is simple: identify the surface, select the correct 4×4 range, select the terrain calibration, verify the display, and drive within the vehicle’s and your own limits. The Thar Roxx’s modes are aids for managing conditions, not a guarantee that every route, water crossing or obstacle can be completed safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Snow, Mud or Sand mode in 2H?

No. Mahindra’s owner’s manual lists those three modes only in 4WH or 4WL. If you select one while in 2WD, the vehicle displays “Select 4×4 mode.” Normal is the only mode listed for 2H.

How do I switch between Snow, Mud and Sand?

Press the physical Terrain Mode switch to open the terrain page, then press it repeatedly to cycle through modes. TFT-equipped vehicles show the page in the instrument cluster; digital configurations show it on the infotainment screen. The infotainment access drawer also offers a Terrain Mode soft switch on applicable vehicles. Confirm the selected mode and activation message.

Can I drive in 4H on a normal road?

Mahindra expressly warns against driving in 4H on tarmac or firm roads because driveline components can be damaged. Use the transfer-case procedure in your manual to return to the appropriate road range before continuing on firm pavement.

Which mode is best for sand dunes?

Use Sand for soft sand, particularly where maintaining momentum is important while climbing dunes. Automatic versions may upshift later and downshift earlier. Keep a controlled, steady pace, look beyond blind crests and never treat momentum as a reason to exceed a safe speed.

What does Mud mode do in an automatic Thar Roxx?

The manual says the transmission may hold gears longer during acceleration and downshift earlier during deceleration. That behavior is part of the calibration. Mud mode is intended for muddy and slippery surfaces; choose 4L when the route needs maximum low-speed pulling control.

Does the Thar Roxx remember my terrain mode after I switch it off?

No. Normal is the default after each ignition cycle. Re-select Snow, Mud or Sand when required and verify the display before entering the surface.

What are the Snow, Mud and Sand speed limits?

The manual lists a maximum of 120 km/h in 4WH and 60 km/h in 4WL for these modes. They are vehicle limits, not recommended speeds for rough terrain. Surface, visibility, obstacles and law may require a much lower speed.

Does every Thar Roxx have 4XPLOR, CrawlSmart and IntelliTurn?

No. Mahindra’s specifications distinguish 4XPLOR and RWD XPLOR terrain systems, while launch material associates CrawlSmart and IntelliTurn with particular diesel 4×4 automatic variants. Check your vehicle documents, installed switches and exact owner’s manual.

Is 650 mm a safe water depth for every crossing?

No. Mahindra’s 2024 launch material publishes 650 mm as a water-wading figure for the described specification. Current, holes, debris, entry and exit conditions can make a crossing dangerous below that depth. Treat the figure as a capability reference, never as a target.

What should I do if a mode will not activate?

Check that the vehicle is in 4WH or 4WL, confirm the display message and follow the complete transfer-case procedure for your trim. If the alert persists, select Normal, remain in a safe location and consult the vehicle manual or Mahindra service support.

The Bottom Line

Use the Thar Roxx sequence in order: select the correct 4×4 range, choose Normal, Snow, Mud or Sand, verify the confirmation on the cluster or infotainment screen, and drive for the actual surface. Snow favors smooth low-grip driving, Mud changes traction and automatic shift behavior, and Sand protects momentum. Keep 4H off tarmac, treat 4L and the published speed figures as operating limits rather than guarantees, and rely on the manual for your exact variant’s controls.
