Choose the drivetrain and gearbox before choosing petrol or diesel. In the current three-door Mahindra Thar OG, the entry D117 diesel is a rear-wheel-drive manual, while the mHawk diesel and G20 TGDi petrol cover different combinations of rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, manual and automatic transmissions. If you need a specific combination, that requirement immediately removes several engines from your shortlist.
For the remaining variants, compare the closest trims using a current on-road quote, your annual kilometres, route mix and local fuel prices. The published specifications do not include a comparable real-world mileage test, so there is no defensible universal answer that one fuel is always cheaper, quicker or more reliable for every owner.

What is current for the 2026 Thar OG?
Mahindra’s 22 September 2026 launch release identifies the current model as the Thar OG and says deliveries began on 11 October 2026. It lists three engine families: the D117 CRDe diesel, the mHawk diesel and the 2.0-litre G20 TGDi mStallion petrol. The 2025 brochure remains useful for displacement and torque-band details, but it predates the Thar OG launch. Use the current launch matrix and variant selector to confirm what is actually orderable.

Engine specifications: D117, mHawk and G20 petrol
Mahindra’s output figures are best read as engine-and-transmission data, not as a promise of acceleration or fuel economy. The petrol engine has a different peak-torque figure with its manual and automatic gearboxes.

How to interpret the figures
- The D117 and mHawk are separate diesel engines, not two names for the same unit. Their displacements and power outputs differ even though both are rated at 300 Nm.
- The petrol automatic’s 320 Nm rating is transmission-specific; the manual petrol is listed at 300 Nm.
- A torque band describes the engine-speed range in which peak torque is published. It does not establish a particular owner’s overtaking performance, crawling ability, refinement or mileage.
- No manufacturer figure supplied here is an independently measured 0–100 km/h time or a comparable petrol-versus-diesel fuel-economy result.
Transmission and 4WD availability
The launch matrix gives the following broad combinations. Exact trim names and equipment can change, so check the live selector for the vehicle you intend to buy.

The 2025 brochure describes six-speed manual and six-speed torque-converter automatic transmissions. Where fitted, the part-time 4WD system has high and low reduction gearing. Because the brochure and the 2026 launch matrix are from different model years, do not assume that every old combination remains on sale.

Start with your non-negotiables
- Need four-wheel drive? Remove the D117 entry configuration from consideration and shortlist only the current mHawk or petrol 4WD variants shown by Mahindra.
- Need an automatic? The D117 entry configuration is not the relevant choice; compare the mHawk automatic with the petrol automatic configurations that meet your drivetrain requirement.
- Prefer a manual? Include the D117, mHawk and 4WD petrol manuals only where the live selector lists them for your chosen trim.
- Happy with rear-wheel drive? The choice expands, but you still need to compare the exact trim equipment and price rather than comparing engine names alone.
Launch prices and like-for-like comparison
Mahindra’s 22 September release gives these introductory ex-showroom prices for the displayed matrix:

These rows are not a complete price list. They illustrate why an entry D117 cannot be used as the diesel comparator for a petrol 4WD automatic. The engine, drivetrain, gearbox, trim and equipment all change at once.
A current Mahindra product page has displayed an LXT petrol 4WD automatic at ₹17,22,500 and a diesel 4WD automatic at ₹17,99,500. Treat those amounts as page-specific displayed prices, not a permanent nationwide premium: the exact model labels, date, location and availability must be checked when you request a quote. Use the current Thar product listing and an authorised dealer’s written quotation for the final comparison.

Ask for an itemised on-road quote for the same registration location and purchase date. It should show the vehicle price, applicable tax, registration, insurance, handling or logistics charges, optional accessories, warranty or service packages and any discount. Compare petrol and diesel quotes with identical assumptions; otherwise a lower headline price can simply reflect different insurance, accessories or trim content.

Fuel-cost comparison without inventing a break-even distance
The available manufacturer material does not establish a directly comparable real-world petrol-versus-diesel mileage result. It also does not provide a universal maintenance total, reliability advantage or repair-frequency difference. A break-even claim therefore requires your own inputs.
Collect the five inputs
- Your realistic annual distance, separated into city, highway and off-road kilometres.
- A measured or conservatively estimated fuel economy for the exact engine, gearbox, load and route. Label it as an assumption until you have your own records.
- Current local petrol and diesel prices, because prices vary by state, city and date.
- The on-road purchase-price difference between the closest matching petrol and diesel variants.
- Any financing difference caused by the higher or lower purchase price, if you are comparing monthly ownership cost.
Use a transparent calculation
For each fuel, calculate annual litres as annual kilometres ÷ assumed kilometres per litre. Annual fuel cost is annual litres × local price per litre. The annual saving is the diesel fuel cost minus the petrol fuel cost, or vice versa, depending on which is lower. Divide the diesel’s additional on-road purchase cost by that annual saving to estimate a simple payback period. If the result is negative, zero or highly sensitive to small changes in economy, a meaningful break-even distance has not been established.
Keep city and highway assumptions separate rather than averaging an optimistic road-trip figure across the whole year. A Thar used for short urban trips, heavy traffic, frequent idling or slow trails can consume fuel differently from one driven mostly on open highways. Record actual fuel receipts after delivery and update the calculation every few months.
Which engine fits common Thar use cases?
Mostly city driving
City buyers should first decide whether an automatic is worth its convenience and whether rear-wheel drive meets their needs. The petrol automatic is available in the current matrix with rear-wheel drive and 4WD, while the mHawk diesel automatic is shown with rear-wheel drive or 4WD. The D117 entry configuration is manual, so it is not the shortlist for someone who requires an automatic. Compare your expected annual kilometres and local fuel prices instead of assuming that the diesel’s fuel cost will automatically recover its purchase premium.

Long highway trips
For frequent intercity use, compare the mHawk diesel and petrol variants with the same gearbox, drivetrain and trim wherever the selector offers them. The published torque bands show where each engine reaches its rated peak, but they do not predict actual overtaking or economy with passengers, luggage, roof equipment or air-conditioning. A test drive on the roads you normally use is more informative than choosing from the torque numbers alone.
Off-road trails
Off-road capability starts with the correct 4WD configuration, low-range gearing where applicable, tyres, ground clearance, recovery equipment and driver judgement. If you require 4WD, eliminate variants that do not offer it before comparing petrol and diesel. The available specifications do not prove that one fuel is universally better on trails; terrain, gearing, throttle control, load and recovery conditions matter. Confirm that the exact trim has the 4WD hardware and high/low ranges described for the applicable configuration.
Mixed use with uncertain annual mileage
When your kilometres are unpredictable, avoid paying a premium solely on an assumed fuel saving. Select the gearbox and drivetrain you will use every day, obtain matching quotes, and use a range of annual-distance and economy assumptions. If the preferred engine wins only under an optimistic scenario, treat the result as uncertain and arrange an extended test drive before ordering.

A practical buying procedure
- Write down the job the vehicle must do. Note passenger load, trailer or accessory plans, typical road surface, annual kilometres and whether low-range 4WD is essential.
- Choose gearbox and drivetrain. Use the current variant selector to remove combinations that are not offered. Do not compare an entry manual D117 with a high-trim 4WD automatic petrol as if fuel type were the only difference.
- Match trim equipment. Make a checklist of safety, convenience, roof, wheel, infotainment and interior features you actually need. Compare trims with equivalent equipment as closely as the live range allows.
- Request two written on-road quotes. Ask the dealer to date each quote and identify engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim, registration state and every charge.
- Build your fuel-cost scenarios. Use local prices and separate city, highway and off-road economy assumptions. Show the annual-distance range that makes the result change.
- Drive both finalists. Test cold start, clutch or automatic response, low-speed manoeuvring, visibility, ride over your typical roads and highway noise. If 4WD is important, ask for a demonstration of the relevant controls and operating procedure.
- Recheck availability and validity. The 2026 introductory prices apply to deliveries through 30 November 2026. Confirm that the quoted vehicle can be delivered within the stated period and ask what price applies afterward.
Questions to ask the dealer
- Is this the Thar OG configuration shown in the current selector, and what is the exact engine code?
- Is the quoted vehicle rear-wheel drive or 4WD, and does it include high and low reduction ranges?
- Which transmission is fitted, and is the petrol torque rating for the manual or automatic version?
- What equipment differs between the petrol and diesel trims being compared?
- Is the price introductory, and does it require delivery by 30 November 2026?
- Which registration, insurance and accessory charges are included in the on-road total?
- What are the scheduled service intervals and prices for this exact engine and transmission? Request the published schedule rather than relying on a verbal estimate.
- What is the cancellation, booking and price-change policy if delivery moves beyond the quoted date?
What the published material does not prove
The launch release and brochure provide engine outputs, torque bands, transmission descriptions, drivetrain combinations and listed prices. They do not establish a controlled, same-route petrol-versus-diesel mileage test; an owner-specific fuel-cost payback; total maintenance spending over a chosen period; long-term reliability; or comparative repair frequency. Those outcomes depend on variant, usage, traffic, fuel prices, maintenance, load, driving style and local conditions.

Earlier Thar launch information from 3 October 2025 is useful historical context, but it is superseded for current availability by the 2026 Thar OG release. Do not use an older price or variant matrix to place a current order without checking the live Mahindra selector.
Bottom line: choose the complete configuration, not the fuel label
Choose the D117 diesel when its entry rear-wheel-drive manual configuration meets your needs and the lower purchase price matters more than automatic or 4WD availability. Choose the mHawk diesel when its available manual or automatic, rear-wheel-drive or 4WD combinations match your route mix and your own fuel-cost calculation supports the premium. Choose the G20 petrol when you want the current petrol power output, an automatic or a petrol 4WD combination that fits your shortlist, and the on-road price works for your annual usage.
No single engine is the correct Thar for every buyer. The defensible choice is the exact trim, gearbox and drivetrain that satisfy your non-negotiables, backed by a current local quote and clearly labelled fuel assumptions.
