What the published Athani estimate actually says
CarTrade’s Athani page, stated as current in July 2026, lists the Thar at ₹11.99 lakh–₹21.91 lakh on road across its versions. The lower figure is rounded; the page’s detailed base estimate is ₹11,98,706 for the AXT 2WD diesel manual. Because the range covers several versions, it should not be treated as the price of every Thar or as a quote for one specific Thar OG configuration.

The displayed components excluding the reported total add to ₹11,97,206, a ₹1,500 difference. CarTrade’s estimate indicates Fastag and accessory-type charges can account for amounts beyond the three headline lines, but it does not establish a permanent ₹1,500 Athani fee. Ask the dealer to name every additional line instead of assuming the difference is mandatory.

Do not present ₹11.99 lakh as the current Thar OG on-road price. The estimate predates the new model announcement and is useful as a dated budgeting reference only.
Why the Thar OG launch changes the price context
Mahindra announced the Thar OG on 22 September 2026, with deliveries beginning on 11 October. The launch release calls the listed prices introductory and says they are valid for deliveries through 30 November 2026. A buyer taking delivery after that period should ask whether a revised price applies; the introductory range is not an open-ended promise.
Mahindra’s official release lists Thar OG introductory ex-showroom prices from ₹10.32 lakh to ₹18.99 lakh. The manufacturer’s online selector says its displayed prices are indicative, may change, and that the dealer’s prices and schemes at invoicing apply. Therefore, the number that matters for your purchase is the written price attached to your vehicle at billing, not an old search-result total.
In the launch statement, Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said: “The Thar is not just an SUV, it is an emotion. With over 4 lakh customers, it has become one of India’s most successful lifestyle SUV brands.” This is Mahindra’s attributed customer-count statement, not an independent Athani sales statistic or a guarantee of local demand.

Use the official figures to identify the model and starting vehicle price, and the Athani listing only to understand the kind of local estimate previously published. A fair comparison between two quotes requires the same variant or drivetrain, registration category, insurance cover and included add-ons. Comparing a low-spec diesel manual with a higher-spec version can make a difference look like a dealer discount when it is actually a specification difference.

What each on-road charge means
Ex-showroom price
Ex-showroom is the starting price of the vehicle before registration, insurance and other delivery-related lines. For Thar OG, attach the ₹10.32 lakh–₹18.99 lakh range to its introductory period and the “ex-showroom” label. Mahindra’s selector warns that displayed prices are indicative and can change; the dealer’s price and scheme at invoicing prevail. Ask whether the quote shows a manufacturer price, a dealer discount or a scheme separately, rather than combining them into one unexplained number.
RTO and registration
RTO is the location-dependent registration amount shown in an on-road estimate. The CarTrade Athani example uses ₹1,47,930, but that is a July 2026 estimate for the specified base version, not a permanent Athani tariff. Registration type, vehicle value and applicable local rules can alter the figure. Tell the dealer the address where the vehicle will be registered and whether it is a private, commercial, company or another eligible registration. Ask whether the quote covers the complete registration process, registration fee and related statutory items, and whether any separate hypothecation entry is included for a financed vehicle.

Insurance is the premium for the policy selected in the quotation. CarTrade’s ₹49,776 base estimate is described as one-year comprehensive own-damage cover plus three-year third-party cover. Your premium can differ by insurer, cover, add-ons and vehicle details. Compare the insured-declared value, deductibles, exclusions, roadside assistance and claim service—not just the premium total. If you arrange insurance independently, request a revised on-road sheet showing exactly what has been removed and whether any dealer insurance-related line remains.
Fastag, accessories and other charges
“Other charges” is not a universal single fee. A quote may include Fastag, accessories, handling-related lines or hypothecation charges. Some items may be required for registration or financing; others are optional products selected by the buyer. Require each line to be labelled as mandatory or optional and ask whether declining it changes the vehicle’s delivery date or price. The ₹1,500 difference in the CarTrade base arithmetic is a reminder to seek named lines, not evidence of a standard Athani surcharge.
Why quotes can differ even for the same Thar
First check the variant and drivetrain. The published Athani range spans versions, while the detailed ₹11,98,706 example is specifically for an AXT 2WD diesel manual. Next check the registration category and address: the same vehicle can produce a different statutory amount when the registration basis changes. Insurance is another major variable because the policy period, insurer, declared value, deductible and add-ons affect the premium. Finally, check whether accessories, Fastag, hypothecation or service packages have been included.

Do not compare a quote that includes three-year third-party cover with one showing only a different insurance period, and do not compare one dealer’s optional accessory bundle against another dealer’s vehicle-only figure. Ask both dealers for the same columns and the same assumptions.

A Karnataka comparison that must not be used as Athani pricing
Autocar India’s October 2026 Bangalore estimate illustrates how a current Karnataka quote can be structured: ₹10,32,000 ex-showroom, ₹1,75,440 RTO, ₹51,600 insurance and ₹10,920 other charges, for ₹12,69,960 on road. These are Bangalore figures, not Athani charges. Bangalore’s RTO, insurance quotation and other-charge amounts cannot be transferred to your registration address.
The value of the Bangalore example is structural: it shows why you should request separate columns for ex-showroom, RTO, insurance and other items. It is not evidence of what Athani will cost, and it does not update the July Athani estimate.
How to get an accurate Athani quotation
- Specify the exact vehicle. Write down Thar OG variant, drivetrain, fuel type, transmission and colour. A range covering several variants cannot answer what your vehicle will cost.
- State the registration type. Tell the dealer the address and whether the vehicle will use private, commercial, company or another eligible registration category. Ask for the registration validity and any finance-related hypothecation entry.
- Request an ex-showroom breakdown. The quote should identify the manufacturer price, any applicable introductory price and any dealer scheme, with the offer’s validity date. Confirm whether the price is valid for your planned delivery date.
- Demand separate RTO lines. Registration tax, registration fee, number-plate or related statutory items should not be hidden inside one unexplained “RTO” total. Ask which authority receives each statutory amount.
- Compare insurance on equal cover. Ask for the insurer, own-damage period, third-party period, insured-declared value, deductible and every add-on. If you bring an outside policy, ask how the dealer recalculates the on-road total.
- Classify other charges. Have the dealer identify Fastag, accessories, hypothecation, service packages and any administrative line, marking each compulsory or optional. Remove optional products from a comparison quote if you do not want them.
- Check the arithmetic. Add the line items yourself and compare the result with the stated on-road total. If there is a difference, ask for a written explanation rather than accepting a rounded figure.
- Get the quote dated and signed. Because Mahindra says invoicing-time prices and schemes apply, preserve the written offer and its expiry date. Confirm the final amount again before payment and registration.
Common buying pitfalls
- Using a rounded search result as a promise: ₹11.99 lakh is the rounded low end of a dated listing, not a guaranteed current Thar OG total.
- Transferring Bangalore charges to Athani: the Karnataka comparison demonstrates format only; its RTO and insurance amounts are city-specific.
- Ignoring the delivery date: the Thar OG introductory prices are stated for deliveries through 30 November 2026, and Mahindra says invoicing-time prices apply.
- Accepting a lump-sum “other” line: request named items and a mandatory-versus-optional label.
- Comparing unlike insurance: a lower premium may reflect less cover, a different deductible or fewer add-ons.
