Before paying a booking amount, obtain a dated estimate in writing for the precise configuration you want, then test-drive that configuration—or the closest possible match.
The official dealer locator lists Thar OG and a “Book Test Drive” option. That gives you a way to request an appointment, not a guarantee that every showroom has a demonstrator available. Call the dealer after submitting the request and confirm the vehicle, appointment time, and test-drive route.

What is known about the Thar OG waiting period
Mahindra has not published a nationwide waiting-time statistic for Thar OG in the launch material, booking page, or dealer-locator information reviewed for this article. Secondary coverage also describes estimates as dependent on variant, colour, and dealer without establishing a single current number. A post titled “Thar OG AXT Waiting” shows the wording buyers use, but it is an individual query, not a survey or a delivery record.

Questions that turn a vague estimate into a usable one
- Which exact variant code and trim are included in the estimate: AXT, LXT, or ZXT?
- Does it cover the petrol or diesel engine you selected, and the manual or automatic transmission?
- Is the quote for 2WD or 4WD, and does that drivetrain have a separate allocation?
- Is the colour currently allocated to the showroom or still awaiting factory allocation?
- What event starts the clock: booking acceptance, allocation, dispatch, or arrival at the dealer?
- How will the dealer notify you if the estimate changes, and who is your named contact?
Do not treat an estimate from another city, another colour, or another trim as your own delivery commitment. A dealer may have immediate stock of one configuration while another requires a factory allocation.
Launch facts you should verify before booking
Mahindra & Mahindra announced Thar OG on 22 September 2026 as the successor to the three-door Thar introduced in 2020. The announcement says deliveries began from 11 October 2026. It listed an introductory starting ex-showroom price of ₹10.32 lakh, with that introductory pricing stated to apply to deliveries through 30 November 2026. This is a dated launch offer, not a guaranteed price for every future delivery: Mahindra’s booking terms say the price prevailing at delivery applies.

The release also highlights a new platform, rear PENTALINK suspension with Watts Link, DAVINCI damping, electric power steering, and additional noise, vibration and harshness damping. Safety highlights include six airbags, front parking sensors and all-disc brakes. An electronic locking differential and Mud, Sand and Snow terrain modes are specified for 4WD versions. Treat these as model or release highlights until the live variant list and your written quotation confirm the equipment on your chosen trim.

Choose the configuration before arranging a test drive
The online selection pages show multiple petrol and diesel configurations and different ex-showroom prices. They are indicative and subject to change. A test-drive vehicle with one engine, transmission or drivetrain cannot demonstrate every version’s performance, controls or equipment.
Engine and fuel
Choose the petrol or either diesel on the basis of your annual distance, traffic pattern, fuel availability and intended use. During the appointment, note throttle response, clutch or automatic-transmission behaviour, low-speed smoothness and engine noise. Those observations belong to the particular demonstrator you drive; they do not establish an independent performance ranking for all three engines.
Transmission and drivetrain
Confirm whether the demonstrator is manual or automatic and whether it is 2WD or 4WD. Ask the advisor to show the drivetrain controls and explain which terrain modes and differential functions are fitted. The launch release limits the electronic locking differential and Mud, Sand and Snow modes to 4WD as specified there, so do not assume a 2WD vehicle has the same hardware or software.

Trim and equipment
Mahindra identifies AXT, LXT and ZXT feature tiers. Equipment can vary by trim and drivetrain. Before you book, compare the live equipment list with the written quotation and mark the features that matter to you—such as parking sensors, airbags, infotainment, seat materials and off-road controls. If a feature is not listed for your exact variant, ask the dealer to confirm it in writing rather than relying on a model-wide advertisement.
How to arrange and conduct the test drive
- Use the authorised-dealer locator. Select Thar OG and the “Book Test Drive” option for a nearby showroom. Submit your contact details and preferred appointment.
- Confirm by phone. Ask which engine, transmission, trim and drivetrain will be available, whether the vehicle is road-registered for demonstrations, and whether an appointment is required. The locator provides a request route but does not prove that every showroom has a vehicle ready.
- Take your intended configuration details. Bring the variant name, preferred colour and drivetrain from the online selection page. Ask whether the demonstrator matches; if it does not, have the differences written down.
- Drive a representative route. Include tight parking manoeuvres, normal urban traffic, a rough or broken surface where legal, and a faster road if the dealer’s route permits it. Stay within posted limits and the dealer’s instructions.
- Inspect before moving. Check seat adjustment, steering-wheel reach, sight lines, mirror coverage, pedal placement and ease of entry and exit. Confirm that the controls you will use regularly are understandable without searching through menus.
- Repeat critical manoeuvres. Try a reverse-park, a three-point turn and a stop-start queue. Ask the advisor to demonstrate the 4WD selector, terrain modes and any locking-differential operation only where it is safe and appropriate.
- Record differences. Write down the demonstrator’s engine, gearbox, drivetrain, trim and tyre specification. Use that note when comparing the vehicle with the one on your quotation.
What to check behind the wheel
Access, seating and visibility
Climb into every seat you expect to use, not just the driver’s seat. Check the effort required to step in, headroom with the seat adjusted for your height, rear-seat access, door opening angles and luggage practicality. Look over the bonnet and around the windscreen pillars at junctions and while parking. Have a passenger sit behind your normal driving position to assess usable legroom.
Steering, controls and parking
Electric power steering is listed among the launch highlights. At parking speed, assess steering effort and how accurately the vehicle responds to small inputs. Use the front parking sensors if fitted and check their warnings in a quiet area. Confirm that the camera, sensors and audible alerts on the demonstrator are present on your selected trim; equipment is not necessarily shared across the range.

Ride, noise and everyday comfort
Drive over the surfaces you actually encounter. Listen for tyre, wind and engine noise at city and open-road speeds, and notice how the suspension handles potholes, speed humps and broken edges. The release cites rear PENTALINK suspension with Watts Link, DAVINCI damping and enhanced noise, vibration and harshness damping; your appointment is the opportunity to decide whether the particular vehicle feels comfortable to you.
Off-road controls and 4WD use
If you need 4WD for trails, steep surfaces or loose ground, ask the dealer to explain the operating sequence and permitted conditions for the system. Confirm which terrain modes and differential functions are fitted to the exact vehicle. Do not engage unfamiliar controls on public roads or attempt an obstacle course without the dealer’s approval and a suitable, controlled location.
Get a complete written quote before paying
Mahindra’s booking page states that displayed prices are indicative, the price at delivery prevails, and the booking amount depends on the model and variant. An online booking or advance payment indicates an intention to purchase; it is not itself a contract of sale. Mahindra or its authorised dealer must accept the application in writing under the booking terms.

Ask for an itemised document showing the selected variant, engine, transmission, drivetrain, colour, ex-showroom price, taxes, registration for your city, insurance, accessories, handling or other charges, booking amount, expected delivery date and cancellation or refund conditions. On-road cost is location-dependent, so compare quotes only when they are for the same registration city and equipment.
Check the dated introductory price carefully
The ₹10.32 lakh starting ex-showroom figure was announced for introductory pricing on deliveries through 30 November 2026. It may not apply to every variant, and a delivery after that date may be priced differently. Ask the dealer to state whether the quoted amount is an introductory price, what date condition applies, and what happens if allocation or delivery moves beyond the stated period. The delivery-time price clause means a launch announcement should not replace a written commercial quote.

What to do after booking
Save the booking receipt, accepted application, variant code, quoted colour, price sheet and the name of your dealer contact. Ask when the dealer expects allocation, when a vehicle identification number will be available, and when the final invoice will be issued. Request written notice of any change to the estimated date, configuration or price.

When the vehicle is allocated, compare the allocation details with your booking: engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim, colour and quoted equipment. Before registration, inspect the vehicle and confirm the final on-road invoice. If the dealer proposes a substitute colour or variant to shorten the wait, obtain a revised quote and revised delivery estimate rather than accepting a verbal change.
Bottom line for a Thar OG buyer
Book a test drive through an authorised Mahindra dealer, drive the same engine, gearbox and drivetrain you intend to purchase where possible, and make the dealer document your configuration-specific delivery estimate.
