Choose the Jimny if a narrow body, four-seat cabin, standard 4WD and useful cargo flexibility matter most. Choose the Thar OG if you want more engine and drivetrain choices, greater reported ground clearance and approach angle, or terrain modes and updated equipment on the appropriate 4WD trim. Neither is a proven universal off-road winner. The sensible choice depends on your roads, passengers, 4WD requirement and exact variant.
This India-market comparison covers the Mahindra Thar OG, the September 2026 refresh of the three-door Thar, and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. It excludes the five-door Thar ROXX and does not treat every rear-wheel-drive Thar as a like-for-like rival. Prices and specifications below are dated published figures, so confirm the final trim and city-specific on-road quote before paying a booking amount.

Thar 3-door or Jimny: what is the key difference?
The Thar OG is the broader, more configurable vehicle. Mahindra’s September 2026 update brings three engine choices across the range, with rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive depending on engine and trim. Its relevant 4WD versions add terrain modes and an electronic locking differential, along with revised platform, suspension and damping claims.
The Jimny takes a simpler approach: one naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, and standard 4WD in the comparison published by Autocar India. Its body is 225 mm narrower than the Thar OG’s in that comparison, and the official brochure confirms a four-seat cabin and a ladder-frame chassis with three-link rigid axles at both ends.

That makes the decision less about a single winner and more about use. A buyer in a dense city or on narrow trails may value the Jimny’s footprint. Someone who wants more powertrain choice, additional reported clearance or a wider range of 4WD equipment may prefer the Thar OG.
Prices and variants in India
Autocar India reported the following ex-showroom India ranges on 24 September 2026:
| Vehicle | Published ex-showroom range | What the headline price means |
|---|---|---|
| Mahindra Thar OG | ₹10.32 lakh–₹17.75 lakh | The lowest figure is a rear-wheel-drive diesel trim; the range includes different engines and drivetrains. |
| Maruti Suzuki Jimny | ₹12.59 lakh–₹14.52 lakh | The comparison reports standard 4WD, with the difference mainly reflecting transmission and trim. |
Mahindra’s 22 September 2026 launch release gives a ₹10.32 lakh starting price for the Thar OG and says its introductory prices apply to deliveries made through 30 November 2026. That cutoff is a delivery condition, not a guarantee that a booking made before the date will receive the introductory price.

Registration, insurance, taxes, accessories, handling charges and location-specific fees can materially change the amount you pay. More importantly, comparing the Jimny’s entry price with the Thar OG’s rear-wheel-drive base price is not a 4WD-to-4WD comparison. Ask each dealer for an itemised quote for the exact engine, gearbox and drivetrain you intend to buy.
Powertrains and 4WD choice
Mahindra Thar OG
The OG range is reported with three engine choices. Four-wheel drive is available only with selected engine and variant combinations, while the range also includes rear-wheel-drive versions. Mahindra’s launch material identifies the OG as an update to the three-door Thar introduced in 2020 and describes revised platform and suspension work. Because the supplied specifications do not establish a complete engine-by-engine availability chart, check the current order form rather than assuming every engine can be paired with 4WD or every gearbox.

On 4WD Thar OG variants, Mahindra lists terrain modes and an electronic locking differential. Those features can help a driver manage changing surfaces, but their presence is equipment information, not proof that the vehicle will outperform another SUV on every trail.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny
The Jimny uses a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine. The cited comparison lists a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic, with 4WD reported as standard across the range. The narrower powertrain line-up makes specification shopping easier: you are choosing between transmissions and trim equipment rather than several engine and drivetrain combinations.

Size, ground clearance and trail geometry
| Measure | Thar OG | Jimny | Source and interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Width | 1,870 mm | 1,645 mm | Autocar India comparison dated 24 September 2026. The Jimny is 225 mm narrower. |
| Length | Not stated in the cited comparison | 3,985 mm | Jimny figure from Maruti Suzuki India’s June 2024 brochure. |
| Wheelbase | Not stated in the cited comparison | 2,590 mm | Jimny figure from the June 2024 brochure. |
| Ground clearance | 232 mm | 210 mm unladen | Thar figure reported by Autocar India; Jimny figure specified in the official brochure. |
| Approach angle | 40 degrees | 36 degrees | Autocar India comparison for the Thar; brochure figure for the Jimny. |
| Departure angle | 36 degrees | 46 degrees | Autocar India comparison for the Thar; brochure figure for the Jimny. |
| Ramp breakover angle | Not stated | 24 degrees | Jimny figure from the official brochure. |
What the numbers mean on the road
The Jimny’s 1,645 mm width is the clearest everyday difference. It can make passing on narrow streets, entering tight parking spaces and placing the vehicle between obstacles less stressful. That is a practical inference from the dimensions, not a substitute for a manoeuvrability test; mirrors, turning space, tyre choice and driver visibility still matter.
The Thar OG has the higher reported ground clearance and approach angle. Those figures can reduce the chance of the front underside contacting a steep rise or a protruding obstacle. The Jimny’s 46-degree departure angle is substantially stronger on paper, which can help when the rear of the vehicle leaves a sharp drop. A vehicle’s wheelbase, suspension compression, tyre pressures, load and the shape of the obstacle affect the outcome, so no angle table can establish which SUV will always go farther.

Cabin, seats and cargo
Jimny’s four-seat layout
The Jimny is a four-seater. Maruti Suzuki’s June 2024 brochure lists two rear-seatback positions with 219 litres or 211 litres of boot space, plus 332 litres when the rear seat is folded. The two raised-seat figures correspond to the brochure’s stated seatback positions; they are not two different body styles.
This layout suits a small family or a couple carrying gear, but it limits passenger count to four. Folding the rear seat increases cargo capacity, although doing so removes those seating positions for the trip.
Thar OG body and practical space
The Thar OG retains the three-door body. The supplied specifications do not establish a directly comparable Thar OG boot-volume figure or a confirmed seat-count figure, so it would be misleading to rank the two SUVs by cargo litres. Inspect the rear access, seat-folding arrangement and the space needed for your own bags at a dealership.
Off-road hardware and what it does not prove
Mahindra lists an electronic locking differential and terrain modes on relevant Thar OG 4WD configurations. It also describes changes to the platform, suspension and damping. These are meaningful hardware and calibration differences from a basic two-wheel-drive SUV, but the exact equipment can vary by trim.
The Jimny’s official brochure specifies a ladder frame and three-link rigid axles at both ends. Autocar India’s comparison reports an electronic locking differential for the Jimny and no terrain-mode system. Verify the equipment on the exact Indian variant you are considering because the brochure and model-year specifications carry their own change disclaimers.

Neither the presence of drive modes nor a published approach angle is a trail-test result. Tyres, driver technique, wheel placement, water and mud conditions, vehicle loading and recovery equipment can change what happens in the same obstacle. The available evidence does not establish a current independent head-to-head trail verdict for the Thar OG and Jimny.
Safety equipment versus crash-test evidence
Mahindra’s launch material lists six airbags, four disc brakes, ESP 9.3 and front parking sensors for the Thar OG. Those are equipment claims from the manufacturer and should be checked against the chosen trim’s final specification sheet.
The Jimny brochure contains safety equipment information, but a directly equivalent, current independent crash-test comparison for the India-market Thar OG and Jimny was not established in the available material. Safety equipment and crash performance answer different questions: an airbag count cannot be converted into a crash-test score, and the absence of a cited result here is not a claim that either vehicle has failed a test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one fits common use cases?
Mostly narrow urban streets
Lean Jimny. Its 1,645 mm width is the strongest objective advantage in this use case. The four-seat cabin and standard 4WD also keep the specification straightforward. Confirm that its 3,985 mm length and 2,590 mm wheelbase fit your parking space, and remember that a narrow body does not eliminate the need to account for mirrors and turning room.
Frequent highway travel with more powertrain choice
Lean Thar OG if you want to choose among three reported engines or require a specific rear-wheel-drive or 4WD configuration. The supplied material does not provide like-for-like acceleration, fuel-economy or noise measurements for the current pair, so do not infer highway performance from engine-count alone. Take the exact variant on a representative drive.

Four people and weekend equipment
Lean Jimny when four seats are sufficient and the ability to carry 219 or 211 litres behind the raised rear seat, or 332 litres with it folded, matches your luggage pattern. The Thar OG may suit you better if its three-door cabin and dealer-demonstrated interior access work better for your passengers, but a directly comparable cargo figure is not established here.
Technical trails and steep exits
Start with the obstacle geometry rather than the badge. The Thar OG has the higher reported clearance and approach angle, while the Jimny has the stronger published departure angle and a narrower body. Then compare the exact 4WD equipment, tyres and underbody protection on the vehicles you can actually buy. Neither paper specification proves a universal trail advantage.
Lowest purchase price
Do not choose from the headline ranges alone. The Thar OG’s ₹10.32 lakh entry price is for a rear-wheel-drive diesel trim, while the Jimny range is reported as 4WD. Compare equivalent drivetrains, transmission types, insurance, registration and dealer charges in your city.
What an older performance comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Autocar India published a performance comparison on 13 November 2025 involving the earlier Thar 4×4 and the Jimny. It was not a test of the September 2026 Thar OG. Any acceleration, braking, ride or performance observations from that article describe the older Thar configuration and should not be presented as current OG evidence.
The OG’s revised platform, suspension and equipment mean that a prior-model impression may be useful historical context but cannot settle the current buying decision. For a current comparison, drive both exact variants and inspect their tyres, suspension specification and 4WD controls.
A practical buying checklist
- Choose the drivetrain first. Decide whether you need 4WD or whether a rear-wheel-drive Thar OG meets your use. Remove non-matching variants before comparing prices.
- Record the exact variant and gearbox. Write down the engine, transmission, drivetrain and model year on both quotes.
- Get an itemised on-road quote. Include registration, insurance, taxes, accessories and any delivery or handling charges. Treat the Thar OG introductory price as subject to Mahindra’s 30 November 2026 delivery cutoff.
- Measure your real constraints. Check the parking width, gate clearance and the narrowest roads you use. The published width difference is large enough to matter in tight spaces.
- Load your normal passengers and luggage. Test the Jimny’s four-seat arrangement and its raised or folded rear-seat configurations. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the Thar OG’s rear access and seat-folding arrangement.
- Inspect 4WD equipment. Confirm that the Thar trim has the terrain modes and electronic locking differential you expect, and verify the Jimny’s equipment on the current specification sheet.
- Drive on representative surfaces. Include traffic, a rough road, a tight turn and a highway section. Do not rely on an older-model road test to represent the Thar OG.
- Plan basic recovery and tyre checks. A portable 12V tyre inflator is optional trip-preparation gear for checking pressure; neither SUV is established here as requiring a particular model.
Verdict: which 4×4 SUV should you buy?
Buy the Jimny when your priorities are a 1,645 mm-wide body, four seats, standard 4WD and a clearly defined cargo layout of 219 or 211 litres with the rear seatback raised, or 332 litres folded. Its 210 mm unladen clearance and 46-degree departure angle are useful published figures, especially for buyers who regularly use narrow roads and tight trails.
Buy the Thar OG when you want a wider range of engine and drivetrain choices, 232 mm of reported ground clearance, a 40-degree reported approach angle, or the terrain modes and electronic locking differential offered on relevant 4WD trims. Its six-airbag and other safety-equipment claims should be checked against the selected variant, and they should not be treated as an independent crash-test result.
