Choose the Mahindra Thar OG if you want the widest choice of engines, gearboxes and two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive layouts. Choose the Force Gurkha 3-door if your priority is a standard 4WD system with low range, manual axle locks and the stronger published ramp-over and water-wading figures. The apparent price gap needs care: the Thar OG’s ₹10.32 lakh introductory starting price is for a rear-wheel-drive diesel manual, while the Gurkha’s ₹16.25 lakh ex-showroom price covers a 4WD diesel manual. A fair purchase decision requires comparing a specific Thar 4WD variant with a current local Gurkha quote.
This is an India-market comparison of the three-door Thar OG announced on 22 September 2026 and the current three-door Gurkha listing. Geometry and equipment figures are published specifications, not proof that one vehicle will always beat the other on a trail.

| Approach angle | 40 degrees | 39 degrees |
| Departure angle | 36 degrees | 37 degrees |
| Ramp-over angle | 26.4 degrees | 28 degrees |
| Ground clearance | 232 mm | 233 mm |
| Stated water-wading depth | 650 mm | 700 mm, attributed to the factory snorkel |
| Traction equipment | Electronic locking differential and terrain modes on 4WD versions | Manual differential locks for both axles |
The table shows why there is no single winner. The Thar has a one-degree approach-angle advantage and far more configuration choice. The Gurkha has a one-degree departure advantage, a 1.6-degree ramp-over advantage and a 50 mm higher stated wading figure. Tyres, wheel placement, driver technique, surface conditions and vehicle loading can matter as much as any one published number.

Thar OG introductory pricing
Mahindra announced the refreshed three-door Thar OG on 22 September 2026, with deliveries scheduled to begin on 11 October 2026. The launch table lists introductory ex-showroom prices from ₹10.32 lakh to ₹18.99 lakh. Mahindra says this introductory pricing applies to deliveries made through 30 November 2026. That is a time-limited launch condition, not a permanent price promise.

The ₹10.32 lakh entry point is an AXT diesel with rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. Higher LXT and ZXT configurations span D117 diesel, D22 diesel and G20 petrol engines, with selected combinations offering four-wheel drive and automatic transmission. Because the lowest price is attached to a 2WD configuration, it should not be presented as a like-for-like alternative to a Gurkha with standard 4WD.
For a real purchase calculation, identify the exact Thar engine, trim, transmission and drive layout first. Then request an itemised quote covering ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, taxes, accessories and any dealer charges. The launch range is a useful ceiling-and-floor reference, but the invoice available in your city can differ once the introductory window, taxes and local fees are applied.
Gurkha price and what it includes
The current three-door Gurkha listing shows one variant at ₹16.25 lakh ex-showroom. That listed vehicle has the 2.6-litre diesel engine, five-speed manual gearbox, selectable 4WD and low range as standard. A Delhi on-road estimate of ₹19.26 lakh is shown separately; it is location-specific and cannot be used as a national on-road price.
On the published figures, a base Thar is cheaper, but its equipment and drivetrain are not equivalent to the Gurkha’s standard 4WD specification. A Thar 4WD with the engine, trim and transmission you actually want may sit considerably closer to the Gurkha than the ₹10.32 lakh headline suggests. Conversely, a buyer who only needs a rear-drive lifestyle vehicle may have no reason to pay for either model’s full off-road hardware.
How to make a fair price comparison
- Decide whether four-wheel drive is essential or whether rear-wheel drive meets your use.
- Match fuel type and transmission. Comparing a Thar petrol automatic with a Gurkha diesel manual answers a different question from comparing two manuals.
- Match safety and convenience equipment, including airbags, parking sensors, camera and infotainment features.
- Get current ex-showroom and on-road quotes from dealers in your registration location.
- Check whether the Thar quote still falls within the introductory-delivery period ending 30 November 2026.
Powertrains and transmissions: Thar flexibility versus Gurkha simplicity
What the Thar OG offers
The Thar OG range covers three engine families identified in the launch material: D117 diesel, D22 diesel and G20 petrol. Depending on the variant, buyers can choose a manual or an automatic transmission, and a rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive layout. That breadth is the Thar’s biggest practical advantage. It lets a commuter avoid paying for 4WD, lets a trail user select a 4WD version, and gives drivers who dislike manual gear changes an automatic option on selected stronger-engine configurations.
The range also means that “the Thar” is not one mechanical specification. An entry diesel 2WD manual, a petrol automatic and a 4WD diesel can have different purchase prices, weights, tyre specifications and operating character. When reading a review or a dealer quotation, keep the exact engine code, trim and drivetrain attached to every claim.

What the Gurkha offers
The current three-door Gurkha listing is a single configuration: a 2.6-litre diesel producing 140 hp and 320 Nm, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Its four-wheel-drive system provides selectable 2H, 4H and 4L, so low range is part of the standard vehicle rather than an option on a higher trim.
This approach is easy to understand. There is no petrol-versus-diesel or manual-versus-automatic decision, and every listed Gurkha starts with the hardware needed for slow, steep or loose-surface driving. The trade-off is that a buyer who spends most of the week in traffic cannot choose a smoother automatic or a less expensive rear-drive version from the current listing.
Does either vehicle have a mileage advantage?
No defensible winner can be named from the available information. The Gurkha listing says the manufacturer has not revealed mileage, and there is no matched real-world fuel-consumption test for the two vehicles. Fuel use will vary with engine, transmission, tyre pressure, traffic, terrain, load and the frequency of 4WD use. Treat any unqualified mileage promise as a different claim from the published evidence.
Off-road geometry: where each vehicle has an advantage
Published dimensions
| Off-road measure | Thar OG | Gurkha 3-door | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approach angle | 40° | 39° | Thar ahead by 1° |
| Departure angle | 36° | 37° | Gurkha ahead by 1° |
| Ramp-over angle | 26.4° | 28° | Gurkha ahead by 1.6° |
| Ground clearance | 232 mm | 233 mm | Gurkha ahead by 1 mm |
| Stated water-wading depth | 650 mm | 700 mm | Gurkha ahead by 50 mm |
Approach angle
The Thar’s 40-degree approach angle is one degree better than the Gurkha’s 39 degrees in the published comparison. In theory, that gives the Thar slightly more room before its front bumper or underbody meets a sharp climb. The margin is small, and the actual result depends on the exact line chosen, tyre size, suspension compression and whether a protruding rock is offset from the vehicle’s centre.
Departure and ramp-over angles
The Gurkha’s 37-degree departure angle is one degree better than the Thar’s 36 degrees, so it has a small geometric advantage when the rear of the vehicle leaves a steep descent. Its 28-degree ramp-over angle is 1.6 degrees better than the Thar OG’s 26.4 degrees. Ramp-over clearance matters when the vehicle crests a ridge: a larger angle can reduce the chance of the centre section touching as the front wheels climb and the rear wheels remain on the approach.

The figures are effectively tied: 233 mm for the Gurkha and 232 mm for the Thar. A one-millimetre difference is too small to use as a buying reason. Underbody protection, wheel placement, suspension movement and the driver’s line through an obstacle will usually be more important than that nominal gap.

Water wading
The Gurkha has the higher stated depth at 700 mm, while the Thar is listed at 650 mm. The Gurkha model page attributes its figure to the factory snorkel. These are manufacturer or listing specifications, not permission to enter any body of water at that depth. Water speed, current, submerged holes, intake protection, door seals, differential breathers and the condition of the road can change the risk dramatically. Never assume a quoted depth guarantees safe passage or warranty coverage.
Traction hardware: electronic assistance versus manual axle locks
Thar OG 4WD system
Autocar’s comparison lists an electronic locking differential and terrain modes for Thar 4WD versions. Mahindra’s launch description also identifies terrain modes and specifies the electronic locking differential on 4WD variants. Terrain assist is mentioned for certain rear-wheel-drive configurations as well, so the feature list must be checked against the exact trim rather than assumed across the range.
An electronic lock can manage wheel-speed differences without asking the driver to operate a separate mechanical lever at each axle. Terrain modes can alter the vehicle’s control strategy for different surfaces. They do not remove the need to select an appropriate line, maintain momentum safely or avoid overheating the drivetrain.
Gurkha’s manual differential locks
The Gurkha uses manual differential locks for both axles, alongside its standard 2H, 4H and 4L system. Engaging a lock can force the corresponding wheels to turn together, helping when one wheel has little grip. The driver must understand when to engage and disengage the locks, and must follow the vehicle’s operating instructions to avoid using them where they can cause driveline stress or handling problems.
Neither arrangement guarantees a trail victory. A lock, electronic or manual, cannot create grip where all four tyres are on a slippery surface. Tyre tread and pressure, axle articulation, approach speed, recovery equipment, ground conditions and driver judgement remain decisive. The available figures do not include a controlled same-trail test, so they should be read as hardware and geometry comparisons rather than a ranking.
Everyday practicality: what is established and what you must test
Thar OG changes aimed at daily use
Mahindra describes the OG as based on its M_Glyde 4G platform and lists DAVINCI damping, a rear PENTALINK suspension with Watts Link, electric power steering and a rear armrest. Those are manufacturer-described engineering and equipment changes intended to improve the ownership experience. They do not establish an independently measured ride, steering or noise advantage.

- Buyer's Guide: The seat guard for car seat between seat & console measures 15.75*2.7*1.53", suitable for gaps of 1.43-1.53" in width, please double-check carefully the distance between your seat and the center console before placing an order
- Storage and Filling in One: Differ from traditional single-function gap fillers, gap filler for car incorporates storage function, offers you the convenience of storing phones and various other items, so that you can access them at any time while driving
- Avoid Items Slipping: With the bumps and vibrations of the car, phones, keys may fall into the seat crevices, which is difficult to pick up, and distracts the driver's attention. Car gap seat filler fills gaps seamlessly to create an effective barrier
- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
The Thar also offers the practical benefit of choice. A rear-drive version can avoid the cost and mechanical complexity of 4WD for an owner whose off-roading is limited to unpaved roads. An automatic version may be easier in urban traffic, while a petrol option may suit a driver who does not want a diesel. Each choice changes the price and operating character, so a test drive should be taken in the exact variant under consideration.
Gurkha’s daily-use equipment
The Gurkha listing includes a 9-inch touchscreen with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a tyre-pressure monitor, a rear camera with sensors, tilt-and-telescopic steering adjustment and LED headlamps. These features address navigation, parking, seating position and visibility, but the 3-door body still imposes the access and packaging compromises typical of a short-wheelbase lifestyle vehicle.
Because the Gurkha is listed only with a diesel manual and standard 4WD, it is a more specialised daily choice. That can be an advantage for an owner who wants the same off-road hardware every day, but it leaves less scope to tailor the vehicle to a traffic-heavy commute.
Questions a test drive should answer
The available sources do not establish a controlled comparison of rear-seat comfort, highway noise, luggage capacity, ride quality, turning manoeuvrability or parking visibility. Evaluate those points on familiar roads rather than relying on a specification sheet.
- Can you climb into the rear seats without repeatedly moving the front seats?
- Do children or older passengers find the rear access manageable?
- Is the steering effort and turning circle comfortable in your usual parking spaces?
- Can your normal luggage fit behind the rear seats, and can you load it without awkward lifting?
- Does the suspension remain composed over the speed breakers and broken roads you use every week?
- At highway speed, are wind, tyre and diesel-engine noises acceptable to everyone who will travel regularly?
- Can you see the corners and judge the vehicle’s width from the driver’s seat?
Run the same route in both vehicles where possible, including a tight parking area, a rough section and a short highway stretch. Record seat position, access time, luggage fit and the controls you use rather than relying on a brief showroom impression.

Safety equipment and the limits of published ratings
Thar OG equipment
Mahindra lists six airbags, all-four disc brakes, ESP 9.3 and front parking sensors among the OG’s safety updates. The launch release presents these as equipment claims. It does not provide an independent crash-test result or a measured stopping-distance comparison, so the presence of the hardware should not be converted into a guaranteed safety ranking.

Gurkha equipment and rating status
The Gurkha page lists dual airbags, ABS and other equipment, along with a rear camera and sensors. It also states that the model has not been tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP. An absent published rating is not a crash-safety result in either direction; it means there is no cited test score to compare.
When safety is decisive, ask the dealer for the exact variant’s standard-equipment sheet and check whether optional accessories alter airbag deployment zones, sensors or the view of parking cameras. Confirm child-seat compatibility and the location of anchor points in the vehicle you will actually register.
Which one suits your use case?
Choose the Thar OG when flexibility matters most
- You want petrol or diesel, manual or selected automatic transmission, or a choice between rear-wheel drive and 4WD.
- Your budget is closer to the entry price and you do not need standard 4WD.
- You want the Thar’s stated six-airbag package, four-wheel disc brakes and electronic assistance on an appropriately equipped variant.
- You will use the vehicle mainly on-road but want the option of a 4WD version for planned trails.
Choose the Gurkha when standard off-road hardware is the priority
- You want 4WD, low range and manual locks for both axles without selecting an upper Thar variant.
- The published 28-degree ramp-over angle and 700 mm stated wading depth are important to the terrain you expect to encounter.
- You are comfortable with a diesel-manual-only vehicle and do not need a petrol or automatic alternative.
- You prefer a single, clearly defined mechanical specification over a broad trim range.
When neither is an easy answer
If your routine is almost entirely urban, both three-door vehicles may be less convenient than a conventional five-door SUV. If your priority is a specific mix of rear-seat access, automatic transmission, fuel type and 4WD, compare the exact Thar variant with the Gurkha rather than comparing model names. If off-roading is occasional, reserve time in the decision for parking, access, ride and luggage checks; published geometry will not answer those daily questions.

A practical buying sequence
- Define the use. Write down your weekly passenger count, luggage needs, traffic exposure and the type of trails or water crossings you genuinely expect.
- Set the drivetrain requirement. Mark 4WD and low range as essential, useful or unnecessary. This immediately removes the Thar 2WD-versus-Gurkha mismatch from the calculation.
- Select comparable Thar variants. Record engine family, transmission, trim and drive layout, then obtain the current dealer price.
- Get a Gurkha quote. Ask for ex-showroom and on-road totals in your registration city; do not reuse the Delhi estimate for another location.
- Inspect equipment. Verify airbags, brakes, parking aids, infotainment, tyre-pressure monitoring and the exact operation of each 4WD or locking system.
- Test the same route. Check access, visibility, turning, ride, highway noise and luggage loading in both vehicles.
- Decide using the trade-off. Pay for the Gurkha’s standard off-road hardware only if you will use it; choose the Thar’s broader range if configuration and daily convenience are worth more to you.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
Mahindra’s launch release supports the Thar OG’s timing, introductory prices, listed variants, features and the company’s own positioning. In that release, Dr Velusamy R, President of Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra, said: “The Thar is not just an SUV, it is an emotion. With over 4 lakh customers, it has become one of India’s most successful lifestyle SUV brands.” The “over 4 lakh customers” figure is the company’s statement, not an independently audited market statistic.
The same executive described the OG as having “significant advances in on-road refinement and off-road capability.” That is manufacturer positioning, not a controlled ride or trail result. Autocar’s September 2026 comparison supplies the cross-model geometry and hardware figures, while its current Gurkha page supplies the listed price and technical details. No named independent study or same-trail comparative test establishes a universal winner, and no first-hand test was conducted for this comparison.
Verdict
The Thar OG is the better fit for buyers who value choice: petrol or diesel, manual or selected automatic, and rear-wheel drive or 4WD across a broad introductory range. The Gurkha is the more focused tool: one 140 hp, 320 Nm diesel-manual setup, standard 4WD with 2H/4H/4L and manual locks for both axles. On paper it leads in departure angle, ramp-over angle and stated water-wading depth, while the Thar leads approach angle and offers more ways to configure the vehicle.
Do not call the Thar cheaper without naming its drivetrain, and do not call the Gurkha universally better off-road without a same-trail test. Match the equipment, obtain local quotes and drive both on the roads and trails that define your actual life.
