Choose the Force Gurkha if your priority is dedicated low-speed trail hardware and you want a five-door option; choose the Mahindra Thar OG if you need more engine, transmission and RWD/4WD combinations, a three-door lifestyle SUV and a lower launch entry price. Neither is automatically the better off-roader on every surface. The right answer depends on whether you tackle technical obstacles regularly, carry rear passengers, drive mostly on roads, and select the correct drivetrain and trim.
This comparison uses the Mahindra Thar OG announced on 22 September 2026 and the Force Gurkha 3-door and 5-door models currently listed in India. Prices are ex-showroom. Mahindra announced the Thar OG on 22 September 2026 as the successor to the three-door Thar introduced in 2020. Deliveries began on 11 October 2026. Mahindra announced a starting introductory ex-showroom price of ₹10.32 lakh and a range covering diesel and petrol engines, RWD and 4WD, and manual and automatic transmissions.

The introductory prices are tied to deliveries made through 30 November 2026. That deadline matters if your delivery moves into a later period: the price applicable at delivery can differ. Mahindra’s live variant pages also state that delivery-time prices prevail, so use the announcement as a launch reference rather than a permanent price list.
The 2026 release highlights an electronic locking differential, terrain modes, six airbags, front parking sensors and all-disc brakes. These are launch claims for the announced Thar OG; do not assume every feature is standard on every trim. Ask for the current variant equipment sheet and inspect the vehicle assigned to your booking.
Some online listings still mix the older Thar with the Thar OG. A separate Mahindra release from October 2025 described the then-current pre-OG model with items such as rear air-conditioning vents, a rear-view camera, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay infotainment, and an electronic brake-locking differential on RWD. Those historical details should not be transferred to the Thar OG without checking its current brochure.
Force Gurkha versions, price and verified hardware
Gurkha 3-door and 5-door prices
Force’s currently listed ex-showroom prices are ₹16,25,013 for the Gurkha 3-door and ₹17,58,013 for the Gurkha 5-door. Force says these figures exclude insurance, registration, road tax and accessories. The five-door therefore costs ₹1,33,000 more than the listed three-door before those additional charges.
These are not on-road prices and should not be compared directly with a Thar OG booking quote that includes local taxes or accessories. Request written, itemised quotations for both vehicles in the same state and on the same day.
Engine and driveline
Force’s official FAQ lists a 2.6-litre engine producing 140 PS and 320 Nm. It also describes electronic shift-on-the-fly 2H, 4H and 4L modes. Two-wheel drive is intended for normal-surface running, while low range is the setting used when controlled speed and additional wheel torque are needed on difficult terrain.
The same FAQ states: “Both the front & rear diff locks are full locking, mechanical and manually operated.” This is a manufacturer description, not an independent test result. It means the driver has a direct mechanical locking function at both axles, rather than relying only on an electronic brake-based intervention.

Wheelbase and body choice
Force lists a 2,400 mm wheelbase for the 3-door and 2,825 mm for the 5-door, a 425 mm difference. The longer five-door gives you a separate rear-door access point and a larger body footprint, but wheelbase alone does not establish ride comfort, breakover performance or seating comfort. Sit in the exact trim with the people and child seats you intend to carry.
The official brochure also lists front and rear manual differential locks and all-terrain tyres. That brochure is older than the current listing, so confirm current trim equipment, tyre specification and any changes with Force before treating those items as standard on the vehicle you are ordering.
Off-road hardware: Thar OG 4×4 versus Gurkha 4×4
What the Gurkha’s locking system changes
A conventional centre selection of 2H, 4H and 4L lets a driver choose the basic operating mode while moving between ordinary roads, loose surfaces and slow technical sections. The front and rear mechanical lockers can force the wheels on an axle to turn together when traction is uneven. That hardware is relevant when one wheel on an axle is unloaded or sitting on a slippery surface.
Lockers do not eliminate the need for correct tyre pressure, careful throttle control, recovery planning or a suitable line. Engaging them on high-grip surfaces can increase driveline stress and make steering more difficult. Follow the vehicle manual for engagement conditions and speed limits.

Mahindra’s 2026 announcement identifies 4WD variants, an electronic locking differential and terrain modes. The release does not establish that every Thar OG has 4WD, that every trim has the locking differential, or that its system operates in the same way as the Gurkha’s manually operated front and rear mechanical locks.
If you expect regular axle-articulation obstacles, ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact 4WD controls and differential function on the trim you are considering. Confirm whether the vehicle has a low-range transfer case, which differential is locked, the engagement procedure and any speed restrictions. Do not infer these details from a photograph of another variant.
Why a specification sheet is not an off-road test
Neither manufacturer’s information supplied here provides a controlled, like-for-like test of climbing ability, traction, ground clearance, approach angle, departure angle, breakover angle, suspension articulation, water-wading depth or recovery performance. Peak power and a locker description cannot prove that one SUV is categorically superior on every trail.

Your terrain matters. Mud, loose sand, rock steps, wet grass, forest tracks and graded gravel each reward different tyre, gearing, clearance and driving choices. A test drive on a paved road cannot replicate a technical trail, and an informal trail video cannot establish a repeatable comparison.

Which SUV suits your kind of driving?
Frequent technical trails and slow obstacles
Start with the Gurkha if you routinely drive rocky tracks, deep ruts or cross-axle obstacles and value its stated 2H/4H/4L system plus manually operated full-locking differentials at both axles. Verify the current trim, tyres and underbody protection, then learn the engagement procedure before heading into remote terrain.
A Thar OG 4WD can also be appropriate, particularly if its terrain modes, electronic locking differential, engine and transmission match your route. The critical step is selecting a 4WD variant; an RWD Thar OG is not a substitute when low-range four-wheel drive is essential.
Mixed commuting, family use and weekend trails
The Thar OG’s broader lineup is useful when your driving includes city traffic and highway travel. You can choose among petrol or diesel, manual or automatic, and RWD or 4WD combinations listed in the launch range. That choice can help you avoid paying for hardware you will rarely use, although the exact price and equipment gap between trims must be checked locally.
The Gurkha 5-door deserves attention when rear passengers enter and leave frequently. Its extra doors and 2,825 mm wheelbase address access and packaging needs that a three-door SUV cannot solve in the same way. The available sources do not provide comparable rear-seat dimensions or prove that one cabin is more comfortable, so make the decision in person.

Mostly paved roads with occasional rough tracks
For occasional broken roads, a two-wheel-drive Thar OG may be sufficient if your routes do not require low range or axle traction control. A 4WD model adds capability but also changes the purchase decision, equipment list and likely running costs; the available information does not establish a fuel-economy or maintenance advantage for either vehicle.
Do not choose the Gurkha’s hardware solely because it sounds impressive if your use is almost entirely urban. Its value is highest when you will use the four-wheel-drive modes, low range and locking differentials in conditions that justify them.

Carrying five people and luggage
The Gurkha is the only vehicle in this comparison with a five-door version listed by the manufacturer. Select it when rear-door access is a daily requirement. The Thar OG is described in Mahindra’s announcement as a three-door model, so rear-seat entry requires access through the front doors.
Before ordering either body style, place your normal luggage in the cargo area, check child-seat access, measure garage clearance and have every regular passenger sit in the exact vehicle. Published wheelbase figures are not a substitute for this check.
Powertrain and transmission choice
Thar OG: more combinations
Mahindra’s launch table spans petrol and diesel engines, RWD and 4WD, and manual and automatic transmissions. That gives the Thar OG a wider configuration menu than the single 2.6-litre, 140 PS/320 Nm package identified in Force’s FAQ.
Choose an automatic if stop-start traffic and easy low-speed control matter more than maximum involvement. Choose a manual if you prefer direct gear selection and engine braking. Diesel and petrol decisions should be based on annual distance, local fuel prices, emissions rules and your dealer’s service support; no comparative economy or reliability figure is established here.
Gurkha: one verified engine output
The Gurkha figures of 140 PS and 320 Nm come from Force’s official FAQ. They are peak outputs, not a prediction of acceleration, hill-climb speed or fuel consumption relative to a Thar OG. Drive both vehicles on the same route and pay attention to clutch effort, low-speed control, visibility, turning manoeuvres and the transmission behaviour you will actually use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety and equipment: compare the exact trim
Mahindra’s Thar OG announcement calls out six airbags, front parking sensors and all-disc brakes. Those features should be checked against the exact variant because launch communications can describe a range rather than every trim.
Do not use this comparison to claim that either SUV has a superior crash-safety rating. No independent comparative safety rating was verified for these models in the available information. Ask for the current standard-equipment list, available driver-assistance features, child-seat provisions and warranty terms in writing.

For the Gurkha, verify current equipment against the latest price list and brochure rather than relying on the older brochure’s all-terrain tyres or manual-locker listing. Confirm whether the vehicle supplied matches the specification shown during your booking.
Real purchase cost: how to compare the quotes
- Choose a like-for-like specification. Compare a Thar OG 4WD manual with a Gurkha configuration that has the four-wheel-drive hardware you need; do not compare a base RWD entry price with a fully equipped off-road model and call the difference a discount.
- Request an itemised ex-showroom price. Record the model year, variant, engine, transmission, body style and any launch offer. For the Thar OG, note that the ₹10.32 lakh starting price is introductory and applies to deliveries through 30 November 2026.
- Add state charges. Include registration, road tax, insurance, handling or logistics charges where lawful, accessories and any extended warranty. Force explicitly excludes insurance, registration, road tax and accessories from its listed prices.
- Confirm delivery pricing. Mahindra states that delivery-time prices prevail on its live variant pages. Ask whether a booking made during the introductory period retains the announced price if delivery occurs later.
- Budget for off-road preparation. Set aside money for recovery equipment, tyre repair, compressor, rated recovery points and training only after confirming fitment and safety. A general “4×4 vehicle recovery kit” is an equipment category, not a guarantee that any particular kit fits either SUV.
- Get the quote in writing. Compare the final on-road totals, waiting period, cancellation terms and included accessories from the same date.
What is not established about ownership
The available manufacturer information does not establish comparative fuel economy, insurance premiums, scheduled-service cost, parts pricing, long-term reliability, resale value or breakdown frequency. Treat claims that one vehicle is automatically cheaper or more dependable as unverified until you obtain local quotations and owner-support information relevant to your region.
Ownership also depends on how you use the SUV. Frequent low-range driving, mud, water crossings, underbody impacts and incorrect tyre pressures can accelerate wear on any four-wheel-drive vehicle. Ask each dealer about service intervals, transfer-case and differential-fluid requirements, warranty exclusions for off-road damage, roadside assistance and the availability of parts near your regular routes.

- Inspect access first. Open every door, climb into the rear seats, fit your child seat if applicable and load your usual luggage.
- Check visibility and manoeuvrability. Test the driving position, bonnet visibility, mirrors, turning manoeuvres and parking sensors in a space similar to your home or trailhead.
- Drive the same route. Use identical urban, highway and broken-surface sections when comparing the Thar OG and Gurkha. Note ride control, steering weight, braking feel, clutch or automatic response and noise without treating an impression as a measured test.
- Operate the relevant controls. With a representative present, identify the Thar OG’s 4WD, terrain-mode and differential controls or the Gurkha’s 2H/4H/4L and locker controls. Ask for the engagement conditions and warning indicators.
- Verify the build sheet. Photograph the variant name and tyre size, then match them to the written quotation and equipment list.
- Ask ownership questions. Obtain service intervals, warranty coverage, insurance estimate, delivery date and cancellation terms before signing.
Decision scenarios
“I want the most dedicated trail hardware.”
Shortlist the Gurkha first because its official FAQ explicitly describes low-range selection and manually operated full-locking differentials at both axles. Confirm that the current vehicle has the equipment and tyres you expect, then compare it with a Thar OG 4WD configured for your terrain.
“I need a lower entry price and may not need 4WD.”
The Thar OG is the logical first quote because Mahindra announced a ₹10.32 lakh introductory ex-showroom starting price and offers RWD as well as 4WD. Remember that the price is launch-limited and that an RWD model does not provide the low-range four-wheel-drive capability you may later want.
“I carry rear passengers every day.”
Test the Gurkha 5-door. Its additional doors and 2,825 mm wheelbase provide a body-style option not listed for the three-door Thar OG. Make the final call only after checking actual rear-seat access, luggage space and parking fit.
“I want an automatic for the city but still visit trails.”
Use the Thar OG launch range to identify an automatic 4WD variant, then verify that its exact trim includes the off-road equipment you require. Do not assume that an automatic Thar OG has the same differential-lock arrangement as the Gurkha.

Bottom line: Thar OG or Gurkha?
The Force Gurkha is the more straightforward choice for a buyer who values stated, hardware-led trail capability, wants selectable 2H/4H/4L and manually operated mechanical locks on both axles, or needs a five-door body. The Mahindra Thar OG is the more flexible choice for a buyer balancing road use, budget and configuration, because its 2026 lineup spans petrol and diesel, RWD and 4WD, and manual and automatic combinations.
Make the final decision from the exact variant, not the badge. Confirm drivetrain, low-range operation, differential function, tyres, safety equipment, on-road cost and delivery price in writing. Then test the vehicle with your passengers and on a route that resembles the roads and trails you will actually drive.
