There is no verified Mahindra Thar OG mileage figure yet. As of 13 October 2026, Mahindra has published the SUV’s engines and outputs but not an official fuel-economy rating, and Autocar India says its independent real-world test is still pending. Owners should therefore budget from their own tank-to-tank result, local fuel prices and driving pattern—not from an older Thar number.
What is the Thar OG’s real-world mileage?
The most accurate answer to “What mileage does the Thar OG give in city and on the highway?” is that a dependable number has not been established yet. Mahindra’s launch announcement, dated 22 September 2026, describes the new model and its powertrains but does not publish fuel-economy figures. Deliveries were announced from 11 October 2026, so owner data is still too new to represent a reliable sample.

Autocar India’s Thar OG mileage page, updated 7 October 2026, also says Mahindra had not revealed official mileage and that its own real-world testing was pending. That is the strongest current evidence: there is no official or independently tested OG km/l figure to quote as a promise. Which Thar OG variant are you budgeting for?
“Thar” is not one fuel-consumption configuration. The launch material identifies three engines, with drivetrain and transmission combinations varying by engine. Record the exact variant on your booking or registration documents before estimating fuel use.

Transmission choice, two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configuration, tyre specification, payload and the type of driving you do can all change the result. Until model-specific measurements exist, it is not sound to rank one OG variant as the most economical.
Older Thar mileage: useful context, not an OG forecast
Autocar India’s standardized test published on 10 May 2021 measured an earlier-generation Thar, not the 2026 Thar OG. The figures are useful for understanding how strongly powertrain and conditions can differ, but they must not be presented as OG mileage.

That 2021 test attributed differences to the vehicle’s weight, boxy shape and speed. It observed better efficiency while cruising below 90 kph than at a steady 90–110 kph. Those observations explain why a single headline number can mislead, but they do not measure the OG’s engines, gearing, aerodynamics or calibration.
How to calculate your Thar OG fuel budget
Use your measured economy and the price at the station where you normally refuel. The calculation is:
Monthly fuel spend = (monthly kilometres ÷ measured km/l) × current local fuel price per litre.
1. Estimate your monthly distance
Add the kilometres you expect to drive in commuting, errands, weekend trips and off-road use. If your driving changes seasonally, create separate low-use and high-use estimates rather than relying on one annual average.
2. Measure tank-to-tank economy
- Fill the tank at a consistent fuel station and note the odometer or trip-meter reading.
- Drive normally, recording the mix of city traffic, open highway, 4WD use, passengers and luggage.
- Refill at the same pump, if practical, and record the litres dispensed and kilometres travelled.
- Divide kilometres by litres added. Repeat over several refills before treating the result as your planning figure; one short trip can be distorted by traffic, idling or a different fill level.
Keep petrol and diesel results separate, and label each result by transmission and drivetrain. A city-only commute should not be blended with a highway trip when you are trying to predict either use case.

3. Apply the local pump price
Fuel prices vary by location and date, so enter the current price per litre from your usual station on the day you make the estimate. Replace the inputs whenever the price or your measured economy changes.
Illustrative calculation
This is a reader-supplied scenario, not a Thar OG test: if you drive 1,200 km in a month, your measured result is 10 km/l and the local price is ₹100 per litre, the arithmetic is 1,200 ÷ 10 × ₹100 = ₹12,000. Substitute your own distance, tank-to-tank result and pump price; no fixed OG rupee estimate is established.
How to make the measurement dependable
The dashboard’s instantaneous or trip-computer display can help you spot trends, but the refill record is the better basis for a budget. Reset the trip meter at every fill, note the litres shown on the pump and avoid comparing a nearly empty refill with one made after only a few litres. Small differences in how full the tank is can distort a single reading.
Use at least several normal refills before drawing conclusions. Mark unusual events such as a long traffic jam, extended idling, a high-speed highway run, a roof load or a trail trip. Keeping those notes prevents an exceptional tank from becoming your assumed monthly economy. If you lend the vehicle to another driver, record that change too, because driving style and route can alter the result.

Before choosing a configuration, write down these six variables. They are more useful than an unverified claim that one OG version is automatically cheaper to run.
- Fuel: petrol or diesel, matched to the prices and availability where you drive.
- Engine: D117 CRDe, D22 mHawk or G20 TGDi mStallion.
- Transmission: manual or automatic, where offered for the chosen engine.
- Drivetrain: RWD or 4WD, according to the announced configuration.
- Operating mix: congested city roads, steady highway travel, trails or a combination.
- Distance: kilometres driven each month, including infrequent long trips.
Ask the dealer to confirm the exact engine, gearbox, drivetrain and tyre specification on the written quotation. Do not transfer a predecessor model’s test result to a different OG variant simply because both carry the Thar name.
What to verify with the dealer and at delivery
Because the launch announcement does not provide an OG fuel-economy or tank-capacity figure, ask for the exact specification of the vehicle being invoiced. Have the dealer identify the engine code, transmission, driven wheels and tyre size in writing. Confirm the official tank capacity from current model documentation rather than relying on a salesperson’s recollection or a predecessor brochure.

Also locate the tyre-pressure label or current owner documentation before the first long trip. The recommended pressure can depend on the vehicle’s load condition. Record the delivery odometer and the first fill so your baseline starts with a known distance and quantity of fuel.
Fuel economy changes with speed, load and terrain
The earlier Autocar test is a reminder that test conditions matter. A boxy SUV pushes more air as speed rises, and the test recorded a difference between cruising below 90 kph and holding 90–110 kph. Stop-start traffic, extended idling, steep grades, roof loads, passengers and heavy luggage can also make your personal result diverge from a controlled highway run.
Record whether a tank included 4WD operation, loose surfaces or slow technical trails. Such driving is part of the Thar’s purpose, but it is not comparable with a steady-road tank. Report city and highway figures separately if those are the numbers you need for trip planning.
How to judge future mileage claims
When an OG mileage number eventually appears, check what it actually represents. A certification figure, an instrumented road test and an owner’s single refill are different kinds of evidence. Look for the engine, transmission and drivetrain tested, plus the city/highway split, average speed, payload and use of 4WD. A result without those details should not be compared directly with your own mixed driving.
Owner comments can reveal useful patterns, but isolated posts are anecdotal and do not form a representative OG dataset. Give more weight to repeated tank-to-tank records from the same variant and similar routes than to a single unusually high or low number.

Check pressures when the tyres are cold and use the pressure specified for your exact vehicle and load condition. A digital tyre-pressure gauge is an optional convenience, not a Thar OG-specific device, and there is no supported percentage saving to promise from using one. Have alignment checked when the steering pulls, the wheel is off-centre or tyre wear becomes uneven.

Do not use predecessor tank capacities to predict OG range
A 2025 Thar brochure lists capacities for the predecessor model: 45 litres for D117 CRDe and 57 litres for mHawk 130 CRDe and mStallion 150 TGDi. Those are not confirmed Thar OG specifications.

A spreadsheet or phone note can make your estimate more dependable. For every refill, record the date, odometer reading, litres added, price per litre, total paid, fuel type, city/highway split, drivetrain mode and unusual load. Calculate kilometres per litre after each tank and a rolling average after several tanks.

If a result suddenly drops, check the easy explanations first: a different fill level, unusually heavy traffic, prolonged idling, low tyre pressure, alignment symptoms, a roof load or a change from road driving to trails. If the pattern persists, ask an authorised workshop to inspect the vehicle rather than assuming the engine’s normal economy has changed.
