The confirmed vehicle is Vision Thar.e, an electric SUV concept unveiled in Cape Town on 15 August 2023 and described in Mahindra’s announcement published 16 August 2023. Mahindra confirmed an INGLO born-electric platform, a high-performance all-wheel-drive powertrain and an off-road-focused design direction. It did not confirm battery capacity, driving range, charging time, connector, price, launch date or measurable trail limits.
The figures most often repeated online—60 kWh with about 325 km, or 80 kWh with roughly 435–450 km—are estimates published by Autocar India in August 2023. They are not Mahindra specifications, and the 435–450 km figure is identified as a WLTP projection rather than an Indian-road or real-world result.

What is the Mahindra Thar electric?
Vision Thar.e is Mahindra’s electric interpretation of the Thar idea, not a confirmed showroom model. Mahindra Electric Automobiles Limited, a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, revealed the concept at the company’s Futurescape event in Cape Town on 15 August 2023. The associated official release was published on 16 August 2023.

Concept design and interior details
The unveiling material describes near-vertical windows, a central pivoting screen, prominent grab handles and an uncluttered cabin layout. It also describes modular construction with adaptable, swappable components. These are design and engineering themes shown for the concept. Production equipment, dimensions and trim availability can change during development.
Mahindra says the concept’s fabrics use 50% recycled PET and that it is committed to recyclable, uncoated plastics. The figures and material claims refer to the concept announcement; they do not indicate that every production trim will use the same materials.
What Mahindra has not confirmed
- A production name, body dimensions or seating configuration.
- Battery capacity, usable energy or battery chemistry.
- Official range under WLTP, India’s certification cycle or any other test.
- AC and DC charging power, charging time, connector standard or network compatibility.
- Ground clearance, approach, departure or breakover angles, water-wading depth, suspension articulation, tire specification or underbody protection.
- Price, booking schedule, launch date or delivery timetable.
Expected range and battery size
Mahindra’s Vision Thar.e announcement gives no battery or range number. That means there is currently no official answer to “How far will the electric Thar go?” Any precise range presented as confirmed is overstating what Mahindra published.

Autocar India’s August 2023 concept report supplied the commonly quoted projections. It said a 60 kWh battery was the most likely choice and projected approximately 325 km. The same report said an 80 kWh battery should return about 435–450 km under the WLTP cycle. Autocar used qualifying language and noted that the power figure could change. These are dated secondary estimates, not production claims.

Why the test cycle matters
Range numbers cannot be compared fairly unless the test cycle, wheel and tire configuration, battery state and vehicle version are known. WLTP is a standardized laboratory procedure, not a promise of the distance a driver will achieve on Indian highways, in city traffic or on a trail. An electric SUV’s actual distance also changes with speed, temperature, payload, tire pressure, terrain, air-conditioning use and how much energy is reserved as a charging buffer.
A larger battery generally adds energy capacity but also mass. A production Thar.e could be offered with different battery or motor combinations, and the final body, tires and software calibration would affect consumption. Until Mahindra publishes certified figures for a defined variant, the two Autocar numbers are best treated as historical planning estimates rather than buying specifications.

Charging: what is known and what remains unanswered
The official concept announcement does not identify a charging connector, AC charging rate, DC fast-charging rate, charging time, battery preconditioning behavior or compatible public network. Autocar India’s concept report also does not provide a confirmed Thar.e charging time.
Why you should not buy equipment for it yet
Without a confirmed production connector and charging specification, it is impossible to establish that a particular home wallbox, portable cable or public charging service will be compatible. A charger’s plug, electrical phase, maximum current, communication protocol and installation requirements all have to match the vehicle. Buying generic equipment in anticipation of the concept could leave you with hardware that is unsuitable or unnecessarily powerful.
Charging details a production launch should publish
- AC inlet type and maximum AC charging power.
- DC connector type and peak DC charging power.
- Time or battery percentage gained in a stated charging window, such as 10–80%, with the test conditions disclosed.
- Whether the vehicle supports scheduled charging, charge-current limits and remote preconditioning.
- Battery thermal-management and preconditioning behavior before a fast-charge session.
- Maximum permissible charging current for home installations and any supplied cable.
- Warranty terms for the high-voltage battery and charging system.
Until those details are released, the accurate answer to “How long will it take to charge?” is unknown.

Can the electric Thar really go off-road?
Mahindra positions Vision Thar.e as an electric off-road SUV and explicitly identifies an AWD powertrain. The concept announcement says the design keeps the Thar’s adventurous spirit. That supports an off-road intent, but it is not evidence of a verified trail capability or a particular water depth.

Do not transfer combustion-Thar figures
Mahindra’s 2 October 2020 announcement for the conventional, combustion-engined Thar lists a mechanical low-range transfer case, a rear locking differential, 226 mm of ground clearance, 650 mm of water-wading depth and published approach, departure and ramp-over angles. Those figures belong to that separate vehicle. They cannot be assigned to Vision Thar.e, whose battery packaging, suspension, software and structural protection may be different.

An electric powertrain could offer useful low-speed torque control and independent management of front and rear motors, but the concept announcement does not specify motor layout beyond AWD or describe its control software. The battery enclosure, thermal protection, recovery points, axle or differential hardware, and warranty conditions will determine whether the production vehicle is suitable for serious trail use. Until Mahindra publishes those details, treat “off-road capable” as a design objective rather than a measured limit.

Price and launch timing
Mahindra has not announced a production price or launch date in the cited Vision Thar.e release. Autocar India wrote in 2023 that a production vehicle was not expected soon based on the product calendar known at that time and estimated an initial price of ₹18–20 lakh. Both statements are historical forecasts, not current commitments.
The estimate should not be used as a reservation budget. Final pricing would depend on battery size, localization, taxes, trim, safety equipment, charging hardware and the market in which the vehicle is sold. Mahindra could also change the name, body style or specification between concept and production. A current booking page, homologation record or formal launch announcement would be stronger evidence than an old media estimate.
How to assess a future production announcement
When Mahindra releases a production version, check the document for a specific variant and market rather than relying on a headline number. A useful comparison requires the following information:
- Confirm the vehicle identity. Check that the document names a production Thar electric variant, not Vision Thar.e or another INGLO-based SUV concept.
- Match the battery to the trim. Record gross and usable kWh, motor count, drivetrain and wheel size for the exact version.
- Check the test cycle. Note whether range is certified under WLTP, India’s test procedure or another standard, and do not compare unlike cycles.
- Read the charging test conditions. Look for the stated starting and ending battery percentages, ambient temperature, charger power and whether the result is peak power or a sustained session.
- Verify trail dimensions. Look for ground clearance, all three approach/departure/breakover angles, wading depth, tire size, suspension travel and underbody protection.
- Identify traction equipment. Confirm whether AWD uses one motor per axle, whether there are selectable terrain modes, and whether any locking function is mechanical or software controlled.
- Review ownership limits. Check high-voltage battery coverage, water-ingress exclusions, recovery guidance, approved towing points and service support in your region.
- Separate standard equipment from options. A larger battery, all-terrain tires or protective skid plates may be limited to one trim or an accessory package.
What is confirmed today
The strongest evidence available is Mahindra’s August 2023 concept announcement: Vision Thar.e is an INGLO-platform electric SUV concept with a high-performance AWD powertrain, modular design ideas and an off-road-oriented identity. Mahindra’s design leaders described the project as retaining the adventurous spirit and off-roading capability associated with Thar, while creating a distinct electric character. Those are manufacturer statements about intent and design, not independent assessments of performance.
There is still no official production range, battery capacity, charging specification, price, launch date or measurable off-road limit in that announcement. The 60 kWh/325 km and 80 kWh/435–450 km figures remain Autocar India’s 2023 projections. Anyone planning a purchase, home charging installation or serious trail build should wait for a production specification, certified range result and market-specific warranty information.
