For most used-SUV buyers facing narrow village lanes, broken surfaces and regular seven-person loads, the Mahindra Bolero Power Plus is the safer default. Its compact 1.5-litre diesel platform, seven-seat layout and straightforward 2WD utility suit mixed rural use. Choose a Tata Sumo Gold instead when you specifically need the older 3.0-litre diesel’s higher documented torque or its seven- and nine-seat flexibility. With vehicles of this age, however, a maintained example of either model is a better buy than a neglected example of the nominal winner.
At a glance: the numbers that matter
Bolero Power Plus and Sumo Gold specifications vary by registration year, emission generation and trim. The table separates figures from the Bolero Power+ owner manual (2025), Mahindra’s current B4 listing and Tata Motors’ Sumo Gold brochure (2018), rather than treating every used vehicle as identical.

| Power | Not stated in the cited owner-manual extract | 85 PS at 3,000 rpm |
| Gearbox | Five-speed synchromesh manual | Five-speed manual |

| Rear suspension | Semi-elliptic leaf springs | Parabolic leaf springs |
| Front suspension | Not specified in the cited manual extract | Double-wishbone with coil springs |
The torque discrepancy for the Bolero is a reminder to identify the exact car. A 195 Nm manual figure should not be applied to every later B4, and the 210 Nm current listing should not be assumed for an older registration. Ask for the registration year, engine code and variant documentation before comparing vehicles.

Pick the Bolero Power Plus for mixed village use
The Bolero is the more manageable choice when the route includes narrow lanes, market parking, farm tracks and a mix of passengers and light cargo. Its seven-seat body and compact diesel platform make it easier to place on a tight road than a larger older utility vehicle. Rear leaf springs are designed for working loads, and the documented 215/75 R15 tyre size offers a common 15-inch utility format.

This is a default, not a promise that every Bolero rides well. Worn bushes, sagging leaves, bent wheels or an overloaded roof can make any short-wheelbase SUV harsh and unstable. Inspect the particular vehicle rather than buying on the badge.
Pick the Sumo Gold for maximum people capacity and low-rpm pull
The Sumo Gold makes sense when nine seats are genuinely useful, or when the vehicle will carry a heavy passenger or goods load on inclines. Its 3.0-litre CR4 diesel is documented at 250 Nm from 1,000 to 2,000 rpm, versus 195 Nm at 1,600–2,200 rpm for the Bolero engine described in the 2025 manual. That earlier torque peak can reduce the need for clutch slipping at walking speed, although gearing, engine health and load still determine how the car feels.
The Sumo’s brochure lists 182 mm of unladen clearance, only 2 mm more than the current Bolero B4’s 180 mm. That difference is too small to decide a purchase. A loaded Sumo, damaged underbody or tired suspension can have less usable clearance than a well-maintained Bolero.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEngine, torque and gearing on rough roads
What the Bolero’s smaller diesel delivers
The Bolero Power+ owner manual identifies a 1,493 cc mHawk diesel producing 195 Nm at 1,600–2,200 rpm, driving through a five-speed synchromesh manual gearbox. This torque band is relatively narrow compared with the Sumo’s stated range, so smooth progress depends on selecting the correct gear and keeping the engine in its useful revs. The current B4 listing quotes 210 Nm, demonstrating why year and trim must be matched before a side-by-side judgment.
On a rural climb, test whether the engine pulls cleanly without excessive smoke or clutch slip. A healthy smaller diesel can be easier to drive and cheaper to keep in tune than a neglected larger one, but no general maintenance-cost ranking is established for all used examples. Service records and actual parts prices in your district matter more than displacement alone.
What the Sumo’s 3.0-litre diesel changes
Tata’s 2018 brochure gives the Sumo Gold’s 2,956 cc 3.0L CR4 diesel 85 PS at 3,000 rpm and 250 Nm at 1,000–2,000 rpm. The stronger low-speed torque is useful for a full cabin, a trailer-like load in the rear or a steep unpaved approach. It does not make the Sumo a high-speed vehicle: the cited figures describe output, not acceleration, top speed or fuel economy.

During a drive, select first gear on an incline and then reverse up the same slope. Listen for differential or propeller-shaft noise and feel for clutch shudder. A Sumo that needs high revs to move off, smokes heavily or overheats has a mechanical problem; its brochure torque figure cannot compensate for that.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ground clearance, approach angles and underbody risk
The current Bolero B4 listing states 180 mm of ground clearance. The Sumo Gold brochure states 182 mm unladen and uses the phrase “Higher ground clearance for ability to tackle tough roads.” These are manufacturer figures measured in stated conditions, not a guarantee on a used, loaded vehicle. Tyre pressure, passengers, replacement springs and underbody damage can change the effective height.
Approach and departure angles are often more important than a two-millimetre clearance difference. Mahindra’s 26 July 2019 press release lists high ground clearance and high approach and departure angles among standard Bolero safety and utility attributes, but it does not provide a single angle figure in the supplied material. Check the front bumper, sump, transfer-area protection, exhaust and rear overhang for impact marks. Scraped metal, fresh underseal or mismatched paint can indicate repeated grounding.
- Drive diagonally over a shallow ditch at walking speed and watch for wheel lift, bumper contact and steering kickback.
- Measure clearance only with the vehicle in its normal tyre size and representative load; brochure clearance is unladen for the Sumo.
- Reject vehicles with cracked cross-members, crushed jacking points or severe chassis corrosion, even if the suspension appears tall.
Suspension and load behaviour
Bolero: rear leaf springs for utility work
The Bolero manual lists rear semi-elliptic leaf springs. Leaf springs tolerate repeated load carrying and are comparatively simple to inspect, but a vehicle that has spent years overloaded may have flattened or cracked leaves. Look for one side sitting lower, leaves touching incorrectly, broken centre bolts and worn shackle bushes. A harsh rear ride can come from missing or seized bushes rather than from the design itself.
Sumo: coil-sprung front and parabolic rear
The Sumo Gold brochure documents double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs and parabolic-leaf rear suspension. This layout can offer useful wheel control and load support when its joints, bushes and springs are healthy. Inspect ball joints, wishbone bushes, coil seats, rear leaves and shackles. A vague steering response, wandering under braking or a rhythmic rear knock requires diagnosis before purchase.
Neither specification predicts comfort by itself. Rural comfort depends on tyre pressure, spring condition, shock absorbers, seat condition and the number of people aboard. Take both vehicles over the same broken section with an independent mechanic present if possible.

Seating, body size and everyday practicality
The current Bolero B4 listing specifies seven seats. The Sumo Gold brochure lists both seven- and nine-seat versions. Confirm the installed layout rather than relying on photographs: seats may have been removed, reupholstered or changed during a commercial conversion. A nine-seat Sumo can solve a genuine transport need, but more occupants increase axle and tyre loads and leave less room for luggage.
Count usable seat belts, check that seat mounts are secure and verify that the registration certificate reflects the seating capacity. Do not add improvised benches to a seven-seat vehicle and assume it remains legal or safe. For a family that normally carries five to seven people, the Bolero’s smaller footprint can be easier to turn around in a courtyard or narrow lane. For a shared village shuttle, the Sumo’s extra seats may outweigh that convenience.
Tyres, wheels and parts support
Both cited documents specify 215/75 R15 tyres. That commonality simplifies comparison, but size alone is not enough. Check the tyre’s load index, speed rating, manufacturing date, sidewall cracking and tread. All four tyres should be the correct size and reasonably matched; a mixture of worn commercial tyres and new passenger tyres can alter braking and steering.
Inspect steel wheels for bends around the bead, elongated bolt holes and repeated weld repairs. A spare wheel that is a different size is an emergency compromise, not a reason to overlook four unsuitable road tyres. Budget for replacement when tyres are old, hard or cracked, even if tread depth appears acceptable. Confirm local availability and delivered price for the exact load-rated 215/75 R15 option before committing to either vehicle.
Parts availability is location-dependent. Ask two independent workshops in your district which suspension, clutch, brake and body components they can obtain, how long delivery takes and whether they routinely service the exact engine generation. A Sumo or Bolero can be easy to maintain in one area and inconvenient in another. Do not infer current stock or pricing from an old brochure.
Safety equipment depends on year and trim
Mahindra’s 26 July 2019 release says standard Bolero equipment included an anti-lock braking system, front disc brakes, a seat-belt reminder, anti-glare inside rear-view mirror, digital immobiliser, solid SUV construction and high ground clearance. The release describes the model at that time; it does not prove that every earlier used Bolero has ABS or the same equipment. Verify the warning lamp, sensors, brake hardware and seat belts on the actual car.

The supplied Sumo Gold brochure does not establish a matching year-by-year safety list. Check whether the car has functioning belts for every registered seat, an operating horn, all lamps, sound brake hoses and a clear windscreen. Test ABS only in a safe, controlled setting with an experienced driver; do not disable a warning lamp or accept a seller’s claim that it is “only a sensor.”
- Turn the ignition on and confirm the ABS and airbag warning-lamp behaviour expected for that year; unexplained lamps need a scan.
- Inspect front discs, rear brakes, brake-fluid condition and pedal firmness.
- Check door latches, seat anchors, child-seat compatibility where relevant and the condition of the steering column.
Complete inspection procedure before buying
- Identify the vehicle. Record registration year, variant, emission standard, engine code, drivetrain and the exact seven- or nine-seat layout. Online listings often combine generations.
- Start it cold. Arrange to see the vehicle before it has been warmed. Observe exhaust smoke, listen for knocks and check for excessive crankcase blow-by by following a qualified mechanic’s test procedure.
- Check fluids and temperature. Look for oil or coolant leaks, contaminated coolant, a pressurised cooling system and a temperature gauge that rises abnormally during a drive.
- Test the clutch and gearbox. Confirm clutch bite is progressive, gears engage without grinding and the synchromesh does not baulk on downshifts. A high bite point, slip in a higher gear or shudder on take-off can require expensive work.
- Load the driveline. On a safe incline, test first gear, reverse and engine braking. Listen for propeller-shaft clunks, differential whine and rear-wheel-drive vibration under acceleration and overrun.
- Inspect suspension and steering. Look underneath for broken leaves, leaking dampers, worn shackles, loose ball joints, steering play and uneven ride height. Have an assistant turn the wheel while you watch joints and linkages.
- Examine the chassis and body. Check cross-members, spring mounts, floor panels and underbody for rust, cracks, impact dents and fresh coating that hides repairs. Compare panel gaps and paint texture for accident evidence.
- Verify wheels and tyres. Confirm all four 215/75 R15 tyres have suitable load ratings, legal tread and acceptable age. Include the spare and wheel nuts in the inspection.
- Verify safety hardware. Test ABS-related functions for the model year, every seat belt, brakes, lights, indicators, horn, immobiliser and warning lamps.
- Review records and negotiate from defects. Match invoices and inspection dates to the odometer, ask when clutch, tyres, timing-related service and suspension work were completed, and price repairs before making an offer.
How to choose when both vehicles pass inspection
| Your priority | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow lanes and a normal load of up to seven | Bolero Power Plus | Compact utility format and seven-seat current B4 specification. |
| Nine registered seats | Sumo Gold | Brochure-listed seven- and nine-seat choices. |
| Low-speed pull with a heavy passenger load | Sumo Gold | 250 Nm documented from 1,000–2,000 rpm. |
| Later-model safety equipment | Whichever specific car has verified equipment | Bolero’s ABS and related standard equipment are tied to Mahindra’s 2019 release; year and trim must be checked. |
| Lowest immediate repair risk | Whichever has better records and chassis condition | Age, maintenance and abuse outweigh brochure differences. |
| Simple tyre replacement | Either, subject to local stock | Both documents specify 215/75 R15, but load rating, age and local availability still matter. |
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing the wrong generations
A current Bolero B4 specification is not a direct substitute for an older used Bolero Power Plus. Likewise, a 2018 Sumo brochure cannot describe every earlier Sumo. Photograph the VIN and engine plate, then match the seller’s claims to the registration documents and manufacturer literature for that year.
Using clearance as a shortcut
Two millimetres of listed clearance does not settle rural ability. A bent chassis, weak springs, incorrect tyre pressure or six passengers and luggage can erase the apparent advantage. Inspect the underbody and drive the route you actually use.
Assuming torque equals effortless climbing
Torque figures are measured at specified engine speeds. Gear ratios, clutch condition, tyre grip and driver technique determine what reaches the ground. A worn Sumo can feel weaker than a healthy Bolero despite the brochure numbers.
Ignoring commercial-use wear
Many rural SUVs have carried passengers, livestock feed or construction material. Look for polished steering wheels, torn seat edges, repaired rear floors, overloaded-spring damage and repeated underbody strikes. Odometer readings should be checked against service invoices and inspection wear.

Ownership costs: what can and cannot be stated
There is no reliable current used-price, insurance or parts-price figure that applies across cities and years. Ask local sellers and workshops for prices on the exact registration year, engine and trim. Obtain written estimates for tyres, clutch, brake overhaul, suspension bushes, leaf springs and cooling-system repairs; these items can dominate the first year’s budget.

Fuel-tank capacity is 60 litres for the current Bolero B4 listing and 65 litres in the Sumo Gold brochure. Tank size indicates refuelling range potential, not fuel economy. Record your own consumption only after the vehicle is mechanically sound and loaded as you normally travel.
Verdict
Buy the Mahindra Bolero Power Plus when you want a manageable seven-seat rural workhorse and can find a newer, well-documented example with straight chassis, healthy suspension and verified safety equipment. Buy the Tata Sumo Gold when nine seats or the 3.0-litre engine’s documented 250 Nm are essential and the vehicle passes a thorough mechanical inspection. In either case, let condition, records, correct tyres and local service support break the tie.
