The Mahindra Bolero Power Plus is generally straightforward to maintain, but clutch wear, brake and suspension wear, cooling-system faults, and starting or engine-management problems can become expensive when diagnosis is delayed. Scheduled servicing is the best protection: follow the owner manual, investigate warning signs early, and compare written quotes that separate parts, labour, diagnostics, GST and consumables.
What problems are most important on a Bolero Power Plus?

Symptoms that point to clutch wear
Clutch wear usually becomes noticeable as engine speed rises without a matching increase in road speed, especially in a higher gear or on an incline. Other clues are a high bite point, a pedal that becomes unusually hard, difficulty selecting gears, shudder during take-off or noise when the pedal is operated. These symptoms can overlap with hydraulic, linkage or gearbox problems, so a clutch kit should not be approved on symptoms alone.
What a proper inspection should include
Ask the technician to road-test the vehicle, check free play and hydraulic operation, inspect for oil contamination, and identify whether the release bearing, pressure plate, driven plate or flywheel is damaged. Replacing only the friction plate can leave a worn pressure plate or noisy release bearing in place. If the flywheel has heat damage or unevenness, machining or replacement may be required.

An owner case records replacement of the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel, followed by a separate starting and knocking concern. That case demonstrates why a repair history does not prove that a particular failure is common or that every clutch job needs a flywheel.

Brake wear and braking-system repairs
Which brake parts wear?
The manual calls for recurring checks of front pads and calipers as well as drum brakes and linings. Depending on the version and axle, a repair may involve pads, shoes or linings, drums, discs, caliper hardware, hoses or fluid. Pulling to one side, vibration, grinding, a soft pedal, a seized wheel or a brake warning lamp warrants immediate inspection.

Never compare a pad-only quote with a quote that includes discs, cleaning, machining, brake fluid or calliper work. Braking repairs are safety-critical, so use a qualified technician and demand the measured pad or lining thickness and an explanation of any uneven wear.
Suspension, steering and tyre-wear problems
On a used Bolero Power Plus, inspect the underbody for cracked or perished bushes, loose or bent arms, damaged links, broken or sagging springs and missing fasteners. A knock over bumps, steering that does not self-centre, wandering under braking, vibration or one-sided tyre wear can indicate more than an alignment setting.

Request a lift inspection before authorising parts. The workshop should show play in each joint, identify fluid leakage from steering components, check wheel bearings and measure alignment. Correcting alignment without replacing a loose bush or bent arm may temporarily hide the symptom while continuing to destroy the tyre.

Overheating and cooling-system faults
Immediate response
Mahindra’s procedure is unambiguous: “It is dangerous to continue driving when the engine has overheated.” Stop safely, switch off the air conditioner and allow the coolant temperature to fall. Do not open a hot pressurised cooling system.
- After the engine has cooled, check the coolant level in the designated reservoir.
- Look for visible coolant leaks around hoses, joints, the radiator or other heat exchangers.
- Inspect hoses for splits or collapse and check the fan blades and belt for damage.
- If a fault is visible, coolant is missing, or the temperature rises again, arrange professional diagnosis rather than continuing to drive.
Low coolant, a leak, a failed fan, belt trouble or a blocked heat exchanger can produce similar symptoms. Repeated overheating can cause secondary engine damage, so a “top-up and continue” approach is unsafe unless the cause has been found.
Starting failures, warning lamps and limp-home operation
If the starter turns the engine at normal speed but it does not fire, repeated cranking is not a diagnosis. The manual notes that a no-start condition with normal cranking may require adjustment or repair. A workshop should check fuel delivery, electrical supply, sensors, immobiliser and stored diagnostic codes in a logical order.

- The diagnosed cause and the tests used to confirm it.
- Each part number and whether the part is genuine, aftermarket or reconditioned.
- Labour hours and labour rate.
- Diagnostic or scan-tool charges.
- GST, shop supplies, fluids and other consumables.
- Related parts that may be needed, such as a release bearing, pressure plate, seals, coolant or brake fluid.
- Warranty period for parts and workmanship.
- Whether removed parts will be returned for inspection.
For braking, steering and overheating faults, prioritise a qualified technician over the lowest estimate. Mahindra recommends authorised service centres and genuine parts, particularly when diagnosis, warranty coverage or electronic systems are involved.
Used Bolero Power Plus inspection checklist
A pre-purchase inspection should be independent of the seller and should include a cold start, a road test and a lift inspection.
- Match the vehicle identification number and exact model year to the service records and parts quote.
- Start the engine from cold; note excessive cranking, smoke, warning lamps, uneven idle or unusual knocking.
- Drive through all gears and test for clutch slip, a high bite point, hard selection, shudder and release-bearing noise.
- Brake progressively on a safe road; check for pulling, vibration, grinding, a soft pedal or warning lights.
- Inspect pads, calipers, drums, linings, discs, hoses and fluid condition rather than judging brakes only by pedal feel.
- On a lift, check suspension bushes, arms, springs, links, steering joints, fasteners, leaks and wheel-bearing play.
- Compare tyre wear across each axle and verify alignment; uneven wear can signal worn or bent suspension parts.
- Inspect coolant level, hoses, belts, fan operation and evidence of dried coolant. Confirm that the temperature remains stable during the road test.
- Check accelerator response and scan for engine-management faults if the vehicle has reduced power or enters limp-home mode.
- Price every immediate repair using a written quote, then negotiate from documented defects rather than a general allowance.
Do not buy solely because a seller says a clutch, battery or cooling part was recently changed. Ask for the invoice, part details and warranty, and verify that the current symptom is unrelated.
What makes one Bolero repair bill higher than another?
The same symptom can produce different totals because of city and workshop labour rates, GST, vehicle condition, parts source, model-year differences and whether adjacent components are replaced while access is already available. A clutch quote that includes a pressure plate, release bearing, flywheel work and seals is not directly comparable with a plate-only quote. The same principle applies to brakes, where discs, callipers, hoses and fluid may be added after inspection.
Before ordering parts, verify the exact model year and VIN. Component listings and broad model estimates are useful for budgeting, but they are not confirmation that a part fits a particular vehicle or that installation is included.
Bottom line for owners and buyers
Budget for scheduled servicing and treat clutch, brake, suspension, cooling and electronic-control symptoms as separate diagnostic questions. The most reliable way to control cost is to follow the manual’s inspection intervals, stop immediately for overheating, obtain measured findings and compare itemised local quotes. A Bolero Power Plus with complete records and a clean independent inspection is a better proposition than one advertised as cheap but carrying undocumented warning signs.
