The safest way to compare luxury SUVs is to compare like-sized vehicles from the same model year, then read every crashworthiness, crash-avoidance, headlight, seat-belt-reminder, and child-seat (LATCH) result. An award badge is a useful shortcut, not a complete ranking. A standard system is more valuable than an optional one, and a “not tested” row means missing evidence—not a poor score.
This U.S.-market guide uses 2026 examples and the current IIHS and NHTSA frameworks. Ratings and qualifying equipment can change by model year, trim, build date, and test configuration, so verify the official listing for the vehicle you intend to buy.

Start with a like-for-like comparison
Choose rivals in the same size class and model year before comparing scores. A midsize luxury SUV should be compared with other midsize luxury SUVs; a large SUV should be compared with large SUVs. Weight matters, too. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) cautions that small-overlap and moderate-overlap results should be compared only among vehicles of similar weight. A larger, heavier vehicle can produce a different crash outcome than a lighter vehicle even when both earn the same letter grade.

The examples below come from U.S. agency pages viewed October 13, 2026. They illustrate how to read the evidence; they are not an exhaustive ranking or a claim that one luxury SUV is universally safest.
What “safety features” actually covers
Crashworthiness: what happens after impact
Crashworthiness tests evaluate how well the occupant compartment and restraint systems protect people in a collision. IIHS’s small-overlap front test sends 25% of one side of the vehicle into a rigid barrier at 40 mph; the lower driver- or passenger-side result is used. The moderate-overlap front test runs at 40 mph with 40% of the vehicle width striking a deformable barrier and uses both a driver dummy and a rear-seat dummy. The side test uses an SUV-like barrier striking the driver side at 37 mph.
These are separate dimensions. A vehicle can perform well in small overlap and side testing yet show a weaker moderate-overlap result. Read each row instead of averaging the grades yourself.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Crash avoidance: warnings versus interventions
IIHS reports vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention 2.0 and pedestrian front crash prevention separately. A system that detects a threat and warns you is not equivalent to one that can apply the brakes or otherwise mitigate a collision. NHTSA says forward collision warning detects a potential collision with a vehicle ahead and alerts the driver; lane departure warning monitors lane position and alerts as the vehicle approaches or crosses lane markings. Other systems can intervene, but the function and operating limits differ by vehicle.
Headlights
IIHS evaluates headlights on straight roads and curves. The result applies to the specific headlight type tested, so “good headlights” in a table does not automatically describe every trim or lamp option. Check whether the tested assembly is standard on the version you are considering.

Seat-belt reminders
Seat-belt-reminder performance is its own IIHS row. It addresses whether the vehicle provides effective reminders for occupants; it is not a substitute for the crash-test grades.
LATCH child-seat hardware
IIHS’s LATCH rating measures how easy the vehicle hardware is to use when installing a child restraint. The grade applies to the specific trim and seat type evaluated. It does not certify that a particular child seat will fit every seating position. Bring your actual restraint to a dealer, locate the anchors and top tether, and confirm that the installation is tight and level.

How to read IIHS awards and the underlying rows
IIHS labels individual results Good, Acceptable, Marginal, Poor, or not tested, and identifies whether a crash-avoidance system is standard or optional. Start with the rows, then use the award as a summary.
2026 Top Safety Pick+
For 2026, Top Safety Pick+ requires Good ratings in small-overlap front, moderate-overlap front, and side tests; Acceptable or Good headlights; Good standard pedestrian front crash prevention; and Acceptable or Good standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention 2.0.
2026 Top Safety Pick
The 2026 Top Safety Pick award requires the same three Good crashworthiness results and Acceptable or Good headlights, plus Acceptable or Good standard pedestrian front crash prevention. It does not require the Plus award’s Good pedestrian result and standard vehicle-to-vehicle criterion.

The 2026 Acura MDX has an Acceptable moderate-overlap result, while the 2026 Lexus RX has a Poor moderate-overlap result. Those entries describe individual test dimensions, not a universal overall score.
In the large-SUV table, the 2026 Volvo EX90 is listed as Top Safety Pick+ and the Audi Q7 as Top Safety Pick. The EX90’s standard pedestrian front crash prevention is Good; the Q7’s standard pedestrian result is Poor. The 2026 Audi Q8 has a Marginal moderate-overlap result. These differences explain why an award and its component rows should both be inspected.

How NHTSA’s 5-Star system differs
NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings provide information about crash protection and rollover safety. The overall score incorporates frontal, side, and rollover-related injury-risk estimates, so it is not interchangeable with an IIHS award. NHTSA says an overall score should be compared only among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another.

Time Lapse Parking Mode provides continuous surveillance by offering a condensed overview of any events that may occur during parking periods. *Please note that the parking monitoring function requires a separate hardwire kit.
A NHTSA “Not Rated” entry means that vehicle has not been tested for that condition. It is an evidence gap, not a failing result. NHTSA also notes that vehicles sold in the United States are certified by their manufacturers as meeting applicable federal motor-vehicle safety standards. That certification is a legal baseline and does not replace a comparative crash-test result.
The model-year 2026 selected-testing page includes, among others, the Acura MDX, Audi Q4 e-tron and Q5, BMW X5, Lexus GX 550 and NX 350h, Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE, and Rivian R1S. The page separately lists vehicles selected for advanced crash-avoidance verification. Selection means NHTSA plans or conducts testing; it is not itself a rating. Check the actual record in the NHTSA ratings database and the 2026 selected-vehicles list.
Same-class examples: read the rows, not just the badge
The following examples are drawn from the 2026 IIHS tables. “Standard” and “optional” refer to how the listed system is supplied in the qualifying configuration; they do not mean every trim has identical equipment.
| Class and model | What the official table shows | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Lexus NX (midsize luxury) | Top Safety Pick+; Good across the displayed crash, headlight, and front-crash-prevention categories; LATCH Good+ | Confirm the tested model year, trim, headlight type, and that the prevention equipment is standard on your vehicle. |
| 2026 Acura MDX (midsize luxury) | Good small-overlap, side, and headlights; Acceptable moderate-overlap; pedestrian prevention shown as an Acceptable optional system | Determine whether the optional pedestrian system is fitted and weigh the moderate-overlap result against the rest of the profile. |
| 2026 Lexus RX (midsize luxury) | Good small-overlap, side, and headlights; Poor moderate-overlap; pedestrian test not listed as tested | Do not infer a pedestrian result from the feature list or brand reputation; “not tested” is unavailable evidence. |
| 2026 Volvo EX90 (large SUV) | Top Safety Pick+; Good crash-test results; standard Good pedestrian prevention; vehicle-to-vehicle result Acceptable; fully electric in the table | Check the standard equipment and the exact battery-electric configuration represented by the test. |
| 2026 Audi Q7 (large SUV) | Top Safety Pick; Good crashworthiness; Acceptable/Good headlights as displayed; standard pedestrian prevention Poor; vehicle-to-vehicle result shown as Good/Acceptable across the table presentation | Note the dimension that prevents a Plus award and inspect the specific vehicle-to-vehicle and headlight rows. |
| 2026 Audi Q8 (large SUV) | Good small-overlap and side; Marginal moderate-overlap; standard pedestrian prevention Poor | Compare it with genuinely similar size, weight, and price alternatives rather than treating it as interchangeable with every large SUV. |
A Good grade is not proof of superiority in every real-world crash, and IIHS and NHTSA tests should not be combined into a homemade total without stating a defensible method. Agency tables can also be updated after a vehicle’s launch.
Translate driver-assistance names into functions
Manufacturers use different names for similar technologies. As NHTSA puts it: “When shopping for a new or used vehicle, you may notice that different manufacturers use different names for the technologies.” Compare what the system senses, what it warns about, whether it intervenes, and the conditions in which it operates—not the marketing label.

- Forward collision warning: detects a potential collision with a vehicle ahead and alerts you.
- Automatic emergency braking or another intervention: may apply braking to avoid or mitigate a crash, subject to the vehicle’s operating limits.
- Lane departure warning: alerts when the vehicle approaches or crosses lane markings.
- Lane-centering or steering assistance: can provide steering input in defined conditions but is not a self-driving system.
Read the owner’s manual for activation speeds, road markings, weather limitations, sensor obstructions, driver-monitoring requirements, and how to cancel or override the feature. NHTSA emphasizes that the driver remains responsible for operating the vehicle: you must steer, brake, and accelerate as needed. The national context is serious—NHTSA’s driver-assistance overview reports 39,254 people died in U.S. motor-vehicle crashes in 2024—but that figure is not a luxury-SUV fatality rate or proof of any system’s effectiveness.
What “not tested” and “not rated” really mean
IIHS “not tested” means the table has no result for that test condition or configuration. NHTSA “Not Rated” means the vehicle has not been tested for that condition. Neither label should be rewritten as “failed,” and neither supports a claim that the vehicle is equivalent to one with a measured Good result.
Absence of a row can reflect testing schedules, a new model, a changed configuration, or a test that the agency has not performed. Treat it as uncertainty. If a missing result is important to your decision—especially pedestrian prevention, a headlight type, or a rollover-related NHTSA result—ask the manufacturer and check the agency database again before purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical showroom and online checklist
- Lock the comparison set. Select the same model year and size class, then note curb-weight differences. Apply IIHS’s similar-weight rule and NHTSA’s same-class, within-250-pound guidance where relevant.
- Open the official test rows. Record small-overlap, moderate-overlap, side, headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention 2.0, pedestrian prevention, seat-belt reminders, and LATCH. Do not rely on a badge alone.
- Mark standard versus optional. Obtain the window sticker or build sheet. A system that earned a result only as an option is not present on a base vehicle.
- Match the tested hardware. Verify trim, drivetrain, headlight assembly, seating configuration, and any build-date limitation. Ask whether a midyear change altered the equipment.
- Check both agencies separately. Use IIHS for its detailed crashworthiness, avoidance, lighting, reminder, and LATCH rows. Use NHTSA for its frontal, side, rollover, and overall 5-Star information. Record “not tested” or “Not Rated” explicitly rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
- Read the owner’s manual. Confirm what each assistance system can detect, when it warns, when it intervenes, what conditions disable it, and what the driver must still do.
- Install your child restraint. Test the exact seat in the intended seating position, connect the lower anchors and top tether correctly, and check front-seat clearance.
- Recheck before signing. Ratings and awards are updated by model year and configuration. Verify the current agency pages for the vehicle identification and build date you are buying.
