Lucid Group announced in May 2024 that it planned to cut approximately 400 jobs, or about 6% of its employee workforce. The company said the reductions were intended to optimize operating expenses and reflect productivity improvements—not that they were specifically meant to fund or speed up its Gravity electric SUV. Gravity production and deliveries later began in December 2024.
What Lucid announced in May 2024
In a May 24, 2024 filing, Lucid said it planned to reduce its employee workforce by approximately 400 people, or approximately 6%. It expected the plan to be substantially complete by the end of the third quarter of 2024, subject to local-law and consultation requirements. Why Lucid said it was reducing jobs
Lucid described the plan as a way to optimize operating expenses in response to evolving business needs and productivity improvements. The filing did not say the cuts were a specific measure to pay for, or accelerate, the Gravity program. The timing put the announcement ahead of the SUV’s planned production start, but timing alone does not establish a causal link.
Which workers were affected
In an employee message attached to the filing, CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson said U.S. employees and contract workers at all levels were affected, including leadership and mid-level management. Hourly manufacturing and logistics workers were excluded from this 2024 plan. Lucid said affected employees would receive severance, health benefits and outplacement services. What the plan was expected to cost
Lucid estimated total charges of $21 million to $25 million, primarily for severance, employee benefits, employee transition and stock-based compensation. It expected $19 million to $23 million of those charges to be recognized primarily in the second quarter of 2024, and the majority of payments to be made by the end of the third quarter. How the Gravity timing worked out
In his contemporaneous May 2024 message, Rawlinson said Lucid targeted Gravity production for the end of 2024. He also wrote, “I’m confident Lucid will deliver the world’s best SUV and dramatically expand our total addressable market, but we aren’t generating revenue from the program yet.” That was his statement at the time, not a current assessment.
Lucid later reported that Gravity commercial production and deliveries began in December 2024. The initial end-of-year target was therefore followed by a company-reported December start. Lucid’s 2025 Form 10-Q

Lucid announced other, separate workforce plans in 2026. In February, it described a U.S. workforce reduction of approximately 12%, excluding hourly production, logistics and quality workers. In June, it announced a separate plan affecting approximately 18% of its then-current U.S. workforce, including full-time employees, contractors and hourly production workers. Lucid projected about $158 million in annualized savings from the June plan. These are distinct plans with different scopes and dates; their percentages should not be added to the 2024 figure as a cumulative share.
