For most families, the Kia EV9 is the smarter buy. It starts tens of thousands of dollars below the Lucid Gravity, offers six- or seven-seat layouts, has a 304-mile target range in selected rear-wheel-drive versions, and carries the strongest published crash-test record in this comparison. The Lucid Gravity is the premium choice for households that will use its longer advertised range, very fast charging, larger claimed cargo capacity, and substantially higher performance enough to justify the price.
The comparison is not completely trim-to-trim. The EV9 figures below cover 2025 U.S. models, while the Gravity figures primarily describe the 2026 Grand Touring and Touring. Battery size, drivetrain, wheel diameter, and whether the Gravity has two rows or three can change range, seating, cargo, and price.

| Family priority | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest purchase price | Kia EV9 | 2025 U.S. MSRP runs from $54,900 to $73,900 before the $1,495 destination charge. |
| Longest advertised range | Lucid Gravity | Lucid quotes up to 450 EPA-estimated miles for a Grand Touring configured as a two-row, five-seat vehicle. |
| Fastest published charging | Lucid Gravity | Lucid says 200 miles can be added in less than 11 minutes under its stated conditions, with a built-in NACS port. |
| Published safety evidence | Kia EV9 | The 2025 EV9 has an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award; Kia says the 2026 model also has that award and an NHTSA five-star overall rating. |
| Maximum claimed cargo volume | Lucid Gravity | Lucid advertises up to 120 cubic feet, while Kia cites up to 81.7 cubic feet for the EV9. |
| Acceleration and power | Lucid Gravity | A tested Grand Touring produced 828 horsepower and reached 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. |
| Towing information | Kia EV9 | Kia publishes up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity; a comparable Gravity figure is not stated in the supplied specifications. |
Those are headline differences, not a substitute for checking the exact vehicle you can buy. A seven-seat Gravity, a five-seat Gravity, and different EV9 trims do not have identical measurements or range.

These are manufacturer MSRP snapshots, not guaranteed transaction prices. Dealer fees, options, taxes, financing, leases, inventory, and any federal, state, or utility incentives can change the amount you actually pay. The available incentive for a particular buyer is not established here, so verify eligibility and expiration dates before treating a discount as part of the budget.
Gravity starts in a different price class
Lucid announced a $94,900 starting price before destination for the Gravity Grand Touring. That is $21,000 above the most expensive listed 2025 EV9 and $40,000 above the EV9’s entry MSRP, before options or destination. An independently tested Grand Touring reached $123,950 as configured, demonstrating how wheels, interior choices, and other options can widen the gap.
The premium is buying more than a badge. Gravity pricing supports a larger advertised range ceiling, a high-output powertrain, a claimed 120-cubic-foot maximum cargo figure, and a charging claim that exceeds the EV9 information published in this comparison. It does not automatically buy a higher safety rating; current public safety-test coverage is materially more complete for the EV9.
Range and efficiency: the number on the window sticker is not the whole trip
Gravity’s 450-mile claim has an important configuration condition
Lucid’s current product information says the 450-mile EPA-estimated figure applies to a Grand Touring with two rows and five seats. The same page lists 337 miles for the Touring in that configuration. Lucid’s launch announcement described “up to 450 miles of EPA-estimated driving range,” but the word “up to” matters: wheel size, battery, drivetrain, weather, speed, payload, and seat configuration all affect the certified result.
If you need three rows, do not assume that the two-row 450-mile rating carries over unchanged. Ask for the EPA label of the exact seating and wheel configuration on the vehicle order. A seven-person load, roof equipment, winter tires, and sustained highway speeds can reduce usable trip distance even when the official rating is unchanged.
EV9 range depends on battery and drivetrain
Kia’s 2025 specifications list trim-dependent batteries, drivetrains, and target ranges. Selected rear-wheel-drive versions reach a target of up to 304 miles. That is a target figure rather than a universal EV9 result; all-wheel drive, wheel choice, temperature, and payload can produce a lower rating or real-world result.
The EV9’s lower maximum range does not make it a poor road-trip vehicle. It means a family should plan charging stops more deliberately, especially when towing or traveling in cold weather. Compare the EPA range for the exact trim rather than using the 304-mile figure for every EV9.

One independent Gravity drive supplies useful context, not a universal forecast
Tom’s Guide’s October 14, 2026 road test drove a Grand Touring 236.8 miles and recorded an average efficiency of 3.24 miles per kilowatt-hour. That test vehicle displayed 386 miles of listed range, produced 828 horsepower, and used a particular wheel, battery, software, and equipment configuration. It is evidence of one drive, not a promised result for every Gravity or a direct laboratory comparison with every EV9.
Efficiency is more useful than a headline range number when you are estimating operating cost. Obtain the window-sticker EPA consumption rating for each candidate, then consider your normal highway speed, charging access, climate, and annual mileage. A vehicle that starts each morning at home can be more convenient than one with a larger battery but no reliable overnight charging.
Charging and road-trip practicality
Gravity has the stronger published charging claim
Lucid says the Gravity can add 200 miles of range in less than 11 minutes and includes a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. The statement is a manufacturer claim under specified charging conditions; actual speed depends on charger output, battery temperature, state of charge, and the vehicle’s software limits. Charging is generally fastest at a low state of charge and tapers as the battery fills.
That combination of long range and rapid replenishment can reduce the number and length of stops on a multi-state trip. It is especially valuable for families who cannot leave a vehicle plugged in at home every night or who regularly drive between cities.

The supplied EV9 specifications establish range targets but do not provide a directly comparable minutes-to-miles charging claim. Treat the EV9 as a practical road-tripper when high-power DC fast charging is available along your route, and check the connector and adapter arrangement for the model year you are buying. Confirm that the stations you rely on accept your vehicle, support the necessary power, and are positioned where a family can safely wait.
For either SUV, a home Level 2 charger is the easiest way to start each day with a predictable battery level. Installation may require a suitable electrical panel, permits, and a dedicated circuit. If you rent, park outdoors, or share a garage, verify that charging is allowed and physically reachable before choosing a large-battery vehicle.
Cold weather, speed, and towing change the plan
- Cold temperatures can reduce battery efficiency and slow a cold battery’s initial charging rate. Precondition the vehicle while it is plugged in when the manufacturer’s controls allow it.
- High highway speeds increase energy use in either SUV, so the distance between stops will be shorter than a mixed-driving estimate.
- A full cabin, luggage, bikes, or a roof box adds weight and aerodynamic drag. Recalculate your comfortable charging margin rather than planning to arrive at zero percent.
- Towing is particularly demanding. The EV9 is rated for up to 5,000 pounds in Kia’s brochure, but the allowed trailer weight, tongue weight, equipment, and range impact depend on the exact trim. A comparable Gravity towing specification is not stated here, so obtain it in writing before ordering a trailer hitch.
Seating, third-row comfort, and child-seat space
Both can carry a large family, but the layouts differ
Lucid advertises seating for up to seven full-size adults and offers multiple seat configurations. Kia also advertises seating for up to seven and offers six- and seven-passenger layouts, including available second-row captain’s chairs. Captain’s chairs improve passage to the third row and give second-row passengers separate seating, but they remove the shared center position that some families use for a child or an adult.

Before buying, place every child seat in the actual vehicle. Check whether the second-row seat can slide or tilt with a forward-facing seat installed, whether the third-row access path remains usable, and whether the top tether anchors are reachable. A brochure’s maximum seat count does not tell you whether three bulky car seats will fit across a particular row.

Gravity publishes a useful independent third-row measurement
In the October 14, 2026 Tom’s Guide road test, the tested Gravity had 33.9 inches of third-row legroom and 42.6 inches in the second row. Those measurements suggest that adults can use the third row more comfortably than in many three-row crossovers, although seat-cushion height, foot space, shoulder room, and the position of the second row also determine comfort.
The test measurement belongs to that specific Grand Touring configuration. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the second-row travel range with an adult in the third row, then repeat the test with your family’s preferred seating positions. A tall driver or rear-facing infant seat can consume the adjustment space that makes the third row feel generous in an empty showroom.
EV9 is a practical three-row package at a lower cost
Kia cites more than 40 inches of second-row legroom, seating for up to seven, and a choice of bench or captain’s-chair arrangements depending on trim. The EV9’s boxier shape and upright seating make access straightforward, but published legroom alone cannot establish adult comfort in the third row. Have an adult sit there while the second row is adjusted for the person who normally drives.
Families should also inspect door opening width, step-in height, the distance from the floor to the third-row cushion, cupholders, charging ports, and climate controls. These details affect whether children can buckle themselves and whether an adult can assist without climbing awkwardly through the cargo area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCargo capacity: maximum volume versus usable family space
Gravity has the larger advertised maximum
Lucid cites up to 120 cubic feet of cargo space and describes flexible seating configurations. The maximum generally refers to a particular seat-folded arrangement, not the space available behind an occupied third row. When all seven seats are in use, measure the floor length from the liftgate to the third-row seatback and the height below the window line. Strollers, groceries, and soft bags may fit even when a rigid suitcase does not.
EV9’s 81.7 cubic feet is still substantial
Kia’s brochure lists up to 81.7 cubic feet of cargo volume. As with the Gravity, that is a maximum tied to a seat configuration and measurement method. Ask which rows are folded and whether the figure includes under-floor storage. For a family trip, the more relevant tests are a week’s groceries behind the third row, a stroller with one seat folded, and luggage for every passenger with the second row occupied.

Safety evidence and driver-assistance confidence
EV9 has the clearer published record
The 2025 Kia EV9 earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ designation, with Good ratings across the listed crashworthiness and crash-prevention categories on the 2025 IIHS page. Kia’s 2026 information says the 2026 EV9 also has IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and an NHTSA five-star overall rating.
Check the rating for the exact model year and body configuration you are purchasing. IIHS can update tests and criteria, and a rating for one year does not automatically transfer to a later vehicle without confirmation. Also review the individual crash-test and headlight results rather than relying only on the award name.
Do not assume an equivalent Gravity award
Current public safety-test coverage supplied for the Gravity does not establish an equivalent IIHS or NHTSA rating. That is not proof that the Gravity is unsafe; it means the documented evidence is less complete at the time of this comparison. Ask Lucid or the dealer for current, model-year-specific IIHS and NHTSA results before making safety the reason to pay the premium.
For either vehicle, test the systems you will use: automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot alerts, rear cross-traffic warning, and the camera view used when children or pets are near the vehicle. Read the owner’s manual for sensor limitations, especially in snow, heavy rain, road spray, or when a trailer is attached.

Gravity is in a different performance class
The tested Gravity Grand Touring produced 828 horsepower and accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. That level of output can make merging and passing effortless, but it also makes smooth throttle use important when children are asleep or cargo is unsecured. Performance tires and large wheels can cost more to replace and may reduce efficiency or ride comfort.

EV9 performance varies by battery and drivetrain, and the supplied specifications do not provide one directly comparable 0-to-60 result for every trim. Its advantages are the broad price ladder, practical cabin, available all-wheel-drive choices, and published towing capacity. Choose the drivetrain for traction, climate, and trailer needs rather than assuming the most expensive trim is automatically the best family vehicle.

Warranty, service, and ownership checks
The supplied specifications do not establish a complete, directly comparable warranty table or service-network count for the two vehicles. Obtain the written warranty booklet for the model year, including battery and high-voltage-component coverage, roadside assistance, corrosion protection, and exclusions for commercial or towing use.
Service access deserves special attention with any premium EV. Before signing, identify the nearest authorized service location, towing procedure for a disabled vehicle, mobile-service availability, parts lead times, and the process for software or recall work. Ask how a collision repair is handled and whether local repairers are certified for high-voltage systems.

Which one should your family buy?
Choose the Kia EV9 when value and documented safety lead
The EV9 is the rational choice when your budget is closer to mainstream three-row SUV pricing, when you need six or seven seats without paying for a luxury flagship, or when independently published safety results carry the most weight. Its 2025 MSRP range leaves room in the budget for a home charger, winter tires, child-seat accessories, and charging costs. The 304-mile target in selected rear-wheel-drive versions is sufficient for many daily routines, provided you can charge at home or at dependable public stations.
Choose the Lucid Gravity when long trips and premium capability pay back
The Gravity makes sense for a household that regularly drives long distances, values fewer charging stops, wants a genuinely quick vehicle, or will use its flexible cargo layout with the right seating configuration. The 450-mile claim, 200-mile rapid-charge claim, and 120-cubic-foot maximum are compelling on paper. They are worth the premium only if your chosen three-row configuration retains enough range and your routes have chargers capable of taking advantage of the vehicle’s charging performance.
Choose neither until the family fit test is complete
Do not order either SUV from a specification sheet alone. A family’s real decision can turn on whether a rear-facing seat blocks the driver, whether a third-row passenger can buckle independently, whether the stroller fits with all seats upright, and whether the nearest fast charger is usable during school-holiday traffic. Those are measurable questions; bring the equipment and people who will use the vehicle.
Quick Recap
A practical test-drive and purchase checklist
- Record the exact vehicle. Write down model year, trim, drivetrain, battery, wheel size, and seat layout. These determine which range and cargo figures apply.
- Load your child seats. Install every seat in the intended position, check latch and tether access, and verify that front-seat occupants retain safe legroom.
- Use every row. Put an adult in the third row, adjust the second row for normal use, and test entry without folding a seat in an unsafe way.
- Measure your cargo. Load the stroller, luggage, sports equipment, and groceries you actually carry. Test both all seats upright and your usual folded-seat arrangement.
- Check charging. Confirm the connector, home-charger plan, public-network access, charging-route software, and realistic winter charging expectations.
- Verify safety information. Look up current IIHS and NHTSA results for the exact model year, and read the individual test categories.
- Price ownership. Get insurance, tire, charger-installation, destination, financing, and service estimates before comparing monthly payments.
- Recheck the contract. Make sure the written order lists the promised seat configuration, wheels, destination charge, options, and any incentive assumptions.
