Mercury Insurance’s 2025 ranking names 10 SUVs it considers among the most affordable to insure, from the Hyundai “Sante Fe” to the Kia Sorento. It is a ranked list—not a promise of the lowest premium for every driver, insurer or location—and the announcement provides no prices or savings figures.
Mercury’s 10 most affordable SUVs to insure, ranked
Mercury Insurance published the list on August 12, 2025. The company says it considered 2025 and 2026 model-year vehicles available at dealerships. The order below preserves Mercury’s ranking; its announcement does not assign an annual premium or dollar saving to any model.

Mercury describes the range as spanning compact SUVs to larger midsize models suited to family use. The ranking is useful as a starting point for comparison, but it does not show how much less one model costs to insure than another.
What Mercury says affects insurance costs
Mercury identifies three factors that contribute to vehicle insurance costs: claims on similar vehicles, repair costs and vehicle safety records. The announcement offers this high-level explanation, not a calculation readers can reproduce. It does not publish the data period, factor weights, rating profile, coverage limits, deductible, state-specific prices or model-by-model premiums.

Why the ranking may not match your quote
An insurer’s price for a particular vehicle depends on the quote’s circumstances. Mercury’s list does not establish that another insurer will rank these SUVs the same way, or that a listed SUV will be the cheapest choice for an individual buyer. Treat “lowest insurance costs” as Mercury’s description of its own 2025 list, not as a universal market finding.
To make a useful comparison, request quotes for the exact model year and trim you are considering. Keep the drivers, address, coverage limits and deductibles the same across quotes; otherwise, differences may reflect the quote assumptions rather than the vehicle. Compare the prices you receive instead of relying on ordinal placement alone.

Insurance cost is not the same as a safety rating
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says its vehicle ratings assess crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants in a crash—and crash avoidance and mitigation, including technology that may prevent a crash or lessen its severity. IIHS awards are tied to model years and vehicle-size categories; an award is not itself evidence that a vehicle has a low insurance premium.
For example, IIHS’s 2025 Top Safety Picks page for small SUVs includes the Honda HR-V. The Kia Sportage result displayed on that page applies to 2026 models built after May 2025. Those model-year distinctions matter when comparing a safety result with the particular vehicle in a quote. IIHS also maintains a separate resource for insurance losses by make and model.

What Mercury’s list can—and cannot—tell you
- It can: identify the 10 SUVs Mercury placed in its 2025 ranking and their order.
- It can: provide a shortlist to include when shopping for a vehicle and requesting insurance quotes.
- It cannot: show actual premiums, savings, or a price difference between two ranked SUVs.
- It cannot: predict your individual premium or another insurer’s ranking.
